UPDATE:

Christian Choate's father Riley and his stepmother Kimberly Kubina were charged Tuesday with murder, battery, criminal confinement, and neglect of a dependent in the young boy's death. Kubina allegedly helped Riley Choate bury his son's body, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

On May 4, authorities investigating a mobile home park in Gary, Indiana made a harrowing discovery. Buried under a thin layer of concrete was the body of a 13-year-old boy, believed to be Christian Choate.

Choate apparently died in April of 2009, but according to his sister, threats from his abusive father Riley kept the boy's death a secret for more than two years.

Only when Riley left their home three weeks ago did Christian's sister feel safe enough to approach authorities about her brother's death. And the account she gives is nothing short of chilling.

According to Christina Choate, young Christian was kept locked in a dog cage for the last year of his life, CBS-2 reports. He was let out of the cage only to eat and use the bathroom, and to endure brutal beatings from his father, who apparently used the cage to keep him from running away.

The Northwest Indiana Times, which has been covering the story since it broke, writes that one day Christina found her brother unresponsive in his cage. She placed a finger under his nose and found he wasn't breathing.

More from the Times:

After she made the harrowing discovery, she scrambled to find the key to the Master Lock that kept her brother trapped. She pulled him out of the cage and put her ear to his chest desperately trying to find a heartbeat.

"I couldn't hear anything," she said.

Then, she asked for help from her stepsister, who in turn called adults for help.

As they waited for adults to come home, Christina Choate frantically tried to revive her brother. She pumped his chest and used an electric air pump to try to get him air.

"I kept thinking, 'Oh my God, my brother is dead,'" she said.

When Riley came home -- as he would later tell police -- he dug a two-foot grave for his son, and buried him in lime, dirt and concrete, placing a Bible on his chest.

After Christian's death, Christina says Riley moved her to Kentucky, where she wasn't allowed to go to school or talk on the phone, until three weeks ago when he moved back to Indiana without her.

According to a Chicago Tribune story on the investigation, it was the boy's biological mother who called police ten days ago inquiring about Christian. She had long been separated from Riley, but presumably after hearing from Christina, she began to worry about his fate.

Investigators were led quickly to Riley, who admitted to burying the boy and willingly led them to his makeshift grave. "If I had to do it over, I'd have just called (police)," Choate told authorities, according to the Tribune. "But I was freaking out."

He did not, however, admit to having anything to do with causing the boy's death.

An autopsy showed that Christian suffered blunt force trauma to his body, internal bleeding and a skull fracture, according to a separate Times story.

Riley Choate is currently being held on charges of removing a body from a death scene, a felony, and misdemeanor failure to notify authorities of a dead body, CBS writes.

More charges, however, are expected later Tuesday.

I cannot believe the biased mind set of the Huff board .... just because someone is from the South you automatically esteem their comments as hate speech when it's no worse or not as bad as some of the other comments on here ... you need to find another job where your liberalism does'nt discriminate against people in the Southern States . I made 2 of the same comments and you have'nt posted even one of them concerning my view of what should be done to these monsters .

Some stories stay with you as this one did for me and the one about the 4 year old who was tossed out of the car, on a country road, into cactus in the middle of the night and left alone to die. Thankfully the 4 year old is alive, but I worry about a child welfare system that he is now in, whcih certainly did not help poor Christian Choate. Christian told his doctor he was being locked up and the doctor never reported it. This is so wrong. There is more to this story. The faces of Christian's evil parents can be seen here.

Is there anyway to memorialize this boy? Does anyone know where he was buried?

Giving his father and step mother the dealth penalty is too good for them. Riley and Kim should endure torture that is 50 times worse than what Christian suffered, now that's justice (not that it would ever bring the poor little guy back). The social worker of child protective services should be jailed for having this kid die under his/her watch.

A candidate for a noose. Not that that will undo what has been done. No words.....

How do you find the words to convey the horror and sadness of this story? To imagine what Christian's life was like breaks my heart and defies my understanding as to how this horrific abuse could have continued for so long without anything being done to save this young man. Although I would like to have seen his sister step forward sooner, I can understand her fear of doing so living under Riley's threat of retaliation. (Missed opportunity #1). I agree with many other readers that, although home schooling is often a wonderful thing these days when public (and even private) schools are battlegrounds for gangs and arenas for bullying vulnerable kids, but there HAS to be some kind of accountability to make sure these kids are receiving an adequate education. Can the home-schooled children be given standardized tests to see if they are keeping up with their peers? In this case, this was missed opportunity #2 to save this young man. Finally, I am a supporter of our legal system, but for these murderers to claim their innocence despite all the obvious evidence exposes a major flaw in our judicial system - when cases are this obvious, they should be fast tracked to make sure these criminals are punished quickly and without undue cost to the taxpayers and well as wasting the court's time. Shame on the defense attorney!

This story has sickened and saddened me and causes me to question how this boy was allowed to dissapear into obscurity for so long. Home schooling does give the parents and guardians the opportunity to control their children's lives without answering to anyone. Shoudn't these families and children be monitored in order to check on the well-being of the children. I fear some people are home schooling their children for the wrong reasons.

This story has sickened me and I had to read it twice to actually believe what I was reading.
The charges against this sick man and his wife are very minimal and it sounds like the Dept of Child Protective Services are trying to was their hands of the whole matter. I am appalled that these two horrible individuals were able to get away with this savagery for so long and even had the gall to bury the boy's body with a Bible. Was that supposed to absolve them? I am not in favor of home schooling and feel that parents should be checked for literacy and mental and intellectual capacity before being allowed to home school their children. But of course the Libertarians and anti-government crowd would never agree with that. Since home schooling does save money and they care little about the welfare and savety of our children.

I can see no reason why the father is not charged with murder. The state of the poor child and the statement from the daughter too scared to speak until the father was out of the way,....This does seem a cut and dried case, and that father needs severe punishing for the cruelty to his darling little son!

Wondering, why did the Mum not see the children to find out personally if they were doing okay?

Poor little angel. This is heartbreaking. There are probably thousands more children suffering the same abuse right now that need help. The parents should endure the same torture x 10.

How about I drag this "Dad" behind my car for a week, stopping for bathroom, food, and gas breaks. Each time I think this guy is dying I will stop and give him some band aids and some water. Then I will continue to drag him behind my car. I will only drive about 30 miles per hour. Would the sentencing judge approve this? My car is ready.

I see from comments that this story has broken many hearts, as it did mine. But we can't just sit back & keep blaming Social Services about their neglect. There are children out there right NOW - alive & going through the same things that Christian did!! There are millions of people in the world today so really, how can human services handle it all?!?! GET OUT THERE & DO SOMETHING!! Even if it is only by knowing your neighbors & keeping an eye out for these children. They go to your childrens schools & live in your neighborhoods. There are children out there with no homes or families of their own, so become a foster parent & make their lives mean something. Show them that someone can & does care about them!!
DO ANYTHING.....BUT DO SOMETHING!!! We aren't helping kids like Christian by just being sad about his story & posting comments!! Get out there & make a difference.......I know that I am going to!!!

Not only that but when I read these stories about Child Protective Services not doing their job it makes me think ..lets pass a law, when a child dies on your watch you have to pay all your salary back if you were sloppy.

Why the hell did he have custody of the children? In one of the articles linked in this one it states that the child's mother left him when he began abusing HER. So they knew this man was abusive and gave him full custody without visitation from the mother anyway? This blood is also on the hands of the American court system and DCS. They are supposed to prevent these things.

If a woman is not abused and gets a divorce she stands a decent chance of getting a fair custody arrangement with her ex. It depends on how good her attourney is. However it is common for abused women to lose custody of their children. They are often falsely accused of making false accusations and of a junk science fabrication called Parental Alienation Syndrome. Even though the theory has been debunked for years it is still allowed to be used as a weapon by divorce attourneys in family courts nationwide. I would not be suprised if such garbage contributed to the death of this innocent boy.

Just to add the story said he was taken out of the adoptive home and cried and looked out the car crying. Why wasn't he allowed to stay there? He was obviously being taken care of and loved!!
