I find it hard to believe that paperbacks will bite the dust.  I buy at least ten times as many paperbacks as I do hardcovers.  It's not just the cost, although that is an issue.  It's how much room they take up on the bookshelves.  They collect more dust than paperbacks, and used book sellers aren't as interested in them as they are in paperbacks, unless they're rare or first editions.  The article was largely speaking of mass-market paperbacks, not trade paperbacks.  I've noticed that most mass-market paperbacks are  the same price in e-book format as they are in the usual paper format.  In that case, I would opt for the paper book as I can:  (1) find it at a discount or in a used book store for less than the cover price, (2) sell it to a used book dealer when I'm done with it (I rarely keep mass-market paperbacks for rereading.  Two of the drawbacks of e-readers are:  (1) you can't sell the book if you don't want to keep it, (2) you can't pass the book on to a friend.

This is not a commercial post. I published an enhanced ebook as I thought this was going to be only one of the fun directions for books in the future. My book can't be published in tree ware as it has videos that match the text. Paperbacks are wonderful and convenient and will not die in the next generation. Due to rate of change what happens after that can't be seen from the present. My enhanced children's ebook is free, hence this is not a commercial post. It contains no advertising either. It's free to you. From your iPad go to the iTunes ebook store and search "Box Head Man". You'll see what the future is bringing and see that it's going to be wonderful and fun.
