(Reuters) - WikiLeaks' Australian founder Julian Assange, who enraged Washington by publishing thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, was given a peace award on Tuesday for "exceptional courage in pursuit of human rights."

Assange was awarded the Sydney Peace Foundation's gold medal in London, only the fourth to be handed out in its 14-year history. The not-for-profit organization associated with the University of Sydney, is supported by the City of Sydney.

Currently fighting extradition from Britain to Sweden over alleged sex crimes, the computer expert was praised for "challenging centuries old practices of government secrecy and by championing people's right to know."

"We think the struggle for peace with justice inevitably involves conflict, inevitably involves controversy," the foundation's director Professor Stuart Rees said.

"We think that you and WikiLeaks have brought about what we think is a watershed in journalism and in freedom of information and potentially in politics."

He also criticized the Australian government, saying it must stop shoring up Washington's efforts to "behave like a totalitarian state," and said it was "appalled by the violent behavior by major politicians in the United States."

WikiLeaks caused a media and diplomatic uproar late last year when it began to publish its cache of more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables, revealing secrets such as that Saudi leaders had urged U.S. military action against Iran.

Some American politicians said WikiLeaks should be defined as an international terrorist organization.

Assange himself claimed publication of the cables helped shape uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East and said WikiLeaks was on the side of justice.

Other winners include Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama.

GOOD. FOR. HIM. He deserves every bit of it. I am usually not one to put people on pedestals but i adore this man and what he stands for. I really respect him for putting his own life on the line for the principle of freedom of speech and government transparency and accountability. Now he just needs to get the Nobel Peace Prize and I might consider thinking there is hope for humanity yet...

It's a shame that the American people were so easily persuaded to ignor the facts that he was trying to show. I think his revelations should be a must read for all liberals, and claiming to be independants.... People might then see how easily they were fooled. Almost our whole government is screwed up. They have taken the Constitution and pillaged it, and replaced our freedom with socialism, marxcism and communism, whilwe using your emotions to trick you.

The countries that had those types of government all failed... Why are they so insistant on making it work? Because they want the power and they can't control the desires to herd you around like ignorant sheep.

What's going on here? I thought that the Obama regime, lead by Hillary had the goods on him for being a sexual deviant? Maybe anyone standing up to our regime should get with him to find out how hes was able to thwart their attacks. Or maybe he's holding a trump card... What does he have on them, that shut them up?

Can they straighten out his legal problems? That's what needed. Then he can take a low key job and stay out of the press.

I'm shocked, stunned to see no mention of this honor on the MSM....maffi, nada, bupkis....no integrity in the MSM today.

Honored and saluted he should be...along with Pfc. Manning. They should share the Nobel...maybe that will keep the USA from executing Manning.

Well deserved.

Hopefully Assange has the decency to mention Bradly Manning when he picks up the prize.
12:33 AM on 05/12/2011
He won't. He has never admitted that Manning was his source. And he won't. He believes in the protection of sources. Manning was caught by the American's, but Assange refuses to confirm his involvement.

The DOJ tried very hard ot find a connection and they couldnt and I believe him that he did not have any knowledge about the source. Even IF he did, admitting to knowing him wont change anything - in fact it will make matters worse for both Manning and Assange. The US is not gonna care if he knew Manning or not; the only thing such confirmation would do is strengthen the US's claim for a bogus espionage extradition request against Assange. The fact that Manning is having all his civil rights trampled on is not Assange's fault, but this government's. Dont make him the fall guy
