We're told Maria has been unhappy with Arnold for years ... and first planned to split with him back in 2009 ... but her mother passed away and Maria decided to hold off.

It's been no secret for years that Ahnold can't keep his hands (and who knows what else) to himself.

She's a classy gal who has apparently waited until she felt her kids are old enough to handle it and now she's going to make a life for herself and her kids where she doesn't have to deal with that anymore.

Now they can both do whatever they want and be happy out in the open.
