Today marks the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley's death.
The legendary reggae musician died of cancer in a hospital in Miami on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36.
Marley's professional music career spanned 18 years, and his music has remained extremely popular since his death. "His legacy is larger than ever, and probably continues to grow," Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, said in an interview with The Guardian. (Watch the video.)
“Legend,” the best-of compilation his label, Island Records, originally released in 1984, is among the best-selling albums of all time, with a “Diamond” certification (more than 10 million sold) from the Recording Industry Association of America, more than 1,000 weeks on Billboard’s catalog chart and a listing as No. 46 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
