John Boehner, Commencement Speaker At Catholic University, Gets Criticized By Catholic Academics

Boehner

First Posted: 05/11/11 06:12 PM ET Updated: 07/11/11 06:12 AM ET

81 Catholic academics signed a letter protesting the fact that John Boehner, speaker of the House of Representatives, is giving a speech and getting an honorary degree at Catholic University of America's upcoming commencement ceremony. The academics allege that Boehner, who is Catholic, has "fail[ed] to recognize" Catholic teachings.

The full text of the letter is below:

Dear Mr. Speaker, We congratulate you on the occasion of your commencement address to The Catholic University of America. It is good for Catholic universities to host and engage the thoughts of powerful public figures, even Catholics such as yourself who fail to recognize (whether out of a lack of awareness or dissent) important aspects of Catholic teaching. We write in the hope that this visit will reawaken your familiarity with the teachings of your Church on matters of faith and morals as they relate to governance. Please help us improve our Web site by taking this brief survey. Your answers will be kept completely anonymous, and the survey will take 1-2 minutes. Thank you!

Mr. Speaker, your voting record is at variance from one of the Church's most ancient moral teachings. From the apostles to the present, the Magisterium of the Church has insisted that those in power are morally obliged to preference the needs of the poor. Your record in support of legislation to address the desperate needs of the poor is among the worst in Congress. This fundamental concern should have great urgency for Catholic policy makers. Yet, even now, you work in opposition to it.

The 2012 budget you shepherded to passage in the House of Representatives guts long-established protections for the most vulnerable members of society. It is particularly cruel to pregnant women and children, gutting Maternal and Child Health grants and slashing $500 million from the highly successful Women Infants and Children nutrition program. When they graduate from WIC at age 5, these children will face a 20% cut in food stamps. The House budget radically cuts Medicaid and effectively ends Medicare. It invokes the deficit to justify visiting such hardship upon the vulnerable, while it carves out $3 trillion in new tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy. In a letter speaking on behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Stephen Blaire and Bishop Howard Hubbard detailed the anti-life implications of this budget in regard to its impact on poor and vulnerable American citizens. They explained the Church's teachings in this regard clearly, insisting that:

A just framework for future budgets cannot rely on disproportionate cuts in essential services to poor persons. It requires shared sacrifice by all, including raising adequate revenues, eliminating unnecessary military and other spending, and addressing the long-term costs of health insurance and retirement programs fairly.
Specifically, addressing your budget, the letter expressed grave concern about changes to Medicaid and Medicare that could leave the elderly and poor without adequate health care. The bishops warned further:
We also fear the human and social costs of substantial cuts to programs that serve families working to escape poverty, especially food and nutrition, child development and education, and affordable housing.

Representing the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishops Hubbard and Blaire have now endorsed with other American Christian leaders a call to legislators for a "Circle of Protection" around programs for the poor that you, Mr. Speaker, have imperiled. The statement of these Christian leaders recognizes the need for fiscal responsibility, "but not at the expense of hungry and poor people." Indeed, it continues, "These choices are economic, political--and moral. As Christians, we believe the moral measure of the debate is how the most poor and vulnerable people fare. We look at every budget proposal from the bottom up--how it treats those Jesus called 'the least of these' (Matthew 25:45)."

Mr. Speaker, we urge you to use the occasion of this year's commencement at The Catholic University of America to give fullest consideration to the teachings of your Church. We call upon you to join with your bishops and sign on to the "Circle of Protection." It is your moral duty as a legislator to put the needs of the poor and most vulnerable foremost in your considerations. To assist you in this regard, we enclose a copy of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. Published by the Vatican, this is the "catechism" for the Church's ancient and growing teaching on a just society and Catholic obligations in public life.

Catholic social doctrine is not merely a set of goals to be achieved by whatever means one chooses. It is also a way of proceeding, a set of principles that are derived from the truth of the human person. In Pope Benedict's words: "Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way... the word "love" is abused and distorted, to the point where it comes to mean the opposite."

We commend to you the Compendium's discussion of the principles of the common good, the preferential option for the poor, and the interrelationship of subsidiarity and solidarity. Paragraph 355 on tax revenues, solidarity, and support for the vulnerable is particularly relevant to the moment.

Be assured of our prayers for you on this occasion and for your faithful living out of your vocation in public life.

So many great posts already here, but wanted to add my gratitude to the Catholic church for speaking out against the cruelty of legislation against the poor, elderly and vulnerable citizens. The Republicans are only pro-life for the birth of a child. The rest of the time they work against humanity unless it's for those who do not need help and compassion.

and when the government and country go completely bankrupt how do you think the truly poor and vulnerable will fare then?

And why would such a thing happen? Oh yeah, the parasitic oligarchs don't have enough yet.

When will their lust for wealth, their covetousness be sated?

The death penalty is also against Roman Catholic doctrine. Perhaps the same people should send a letter to the five reactionaries on the US Supreme Court, all of whom happen to profess to be Roman Catholic.

The catechism of the catholic church, the sure norm for Catholics, says that the death penalty may be necessary in extreme cases, but that it should be very rare.

This is extremely rich. I was wondering when the Church would finally wake up and see beyond the abortion issue. As a Catholic it has been infinitely irritating to see the abortion issue so front-and-center while the social justice aspect was ignored altogether (we can't have health reform that helps the poor, it might result in more abortions *gasp*). Well, now what do you have to say? Sure the unborn are "protected" with Republicans in office but what about the living? Finally some proof that the Church does indeed stick to its guns on all aspects of its doctrine

The thing with abortion is that it's debated within the Catholic Church itself within some circles. One of the commandments is "Thou shall not kill" It all goes back to the question "When does life began?" at birth or at conceptition or somewhere between.

Pope John Paul II tried to end the mess by saying it starts at conceptition.

Yet, what is CLEAR, the Catholic Church advocates in almost every reading of helping the poor, look beyond yourself in life, treat others better than others treat yourself, etc. Basically follow the path of Jesus Christ.

Following the path of Jesus Christ doesn't mean pay high taxes to your government and let them take care of the unfortunate. It's a lot more difficult, personal and hands on than that.

This is only proof that the liberal academics will badger a Catholic politician when it suits their purpose. I note that they sent no such note to Nancy Pelosi or Joe Biden, or Ted Kennedy or John Kerry.

They also seem to be ignoring the Church's teaching on subsidiarity and the fact that it is a matter of prudential judgement as to how best provide assistance for those in need. Catholic's can in good faith vote against the state welfare behemoth as there is no evidence that these programs actually improve wellbeing, many believe they actually perpetuate and create problems for the vulnernable in society.

It's about time!!! I have been waiting for so long for the Catholic Church to weigh in on the direction this country is taking to annihilate the middle class and create third world conditions in order that the top 2% and their corporate partners can suck up more wealth. This message needs to move beyond academia into the churches and into the mainstream.

This is no less stupid than when Notre Dame allowed Obama, a vociferous supporter of abortion, to speak at their school.

Actually Obama's personal position is that he is against abortion, what he supports is the right of a woman to make that choice for herself as that decision and what ever consequences that might accompany that decision should be between the individual woman, her doctor and whatever higher power she might believe in. Obama's position is for the government to stay out of it!

But that's to be expected from conservatives, always twisting the truth or taking it out of context or at the very least failed memories or they have just be gobbling up BS that other conservatives have been feeding them.

Obama's postion is to support abortion to the point of winking at infanticide. Check out his rating from Planned Parenthood and his position on the Born Alive bill. I couldn't care less about his personal reservations, his public actions support abortion absolutely.

Ron, your nastiness is "not to be expected" from anyone. To suugest as much would be join you in blanket assertions that serve no other purpose than to embarass oneself.

Obama can claim any position he wants. However, his words and deeds will reveal otherwise.

While in the Illinois State Senate he refused to support a law protecting the lives of children born after botched abortions. During his first few days in office he reinstituted stem-cell research using aborted fetuses.

Finally, what does this quote tell you about his views on abortion?

"I've got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old, I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

I know from experience, a pro life republican has to be doing something really wrong to get that many Catholic University Professors to disagree with him (i.e. pass a budget written by an Ayn Randophile)

This is an excellent article. Even his own church has to remind him of right and wrong. Maybe his constituents will remind him again when he's up for re-election.

Not a chance in Hell! These guys think that they are Gods! They think that the evidence of God's endorsement of their philosophy is in the great wealth they have accumulated. Just as Jesus railed against the rich and their symbols of godliness, there are a few who got the message....that the wealthy have the least chance of getting into heaven! The religious right has been teaching for decades that God blesses the righteous with great wealth and thereby riches become the proof that one is closer to God. Look at the televangelists. What do they offer on every one of them? A source of great morality and goodness? NOT! Money, Money, Money, blessings. When you are a billioniere these guys will listen! Not Before!

In my opinion, many Catholic Right-wing Republicans refuse to see beyond abortion and gay marriage. They use them as gates to block out what comes behind those two issues within the Social Justice platform of the Catholic Church. As a fellow church going, parochial educated, Catholic, I can't understand their lack of empathy for their fellow man.
