Mary Landrieu, Mark Begich Defend Oil Companies Against Democrats

First Posted: 05/11/11 05:47 PM ET Updated: 07/11/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Democratic attempt to take on the major oil companies is being challenged from within, with representatives of producing states rushing to the defense of the dirty-energy industry, complicating the plan to present a stark contrast between the two parties.

Democratic Sens. Mark Begich and Mary Landrieu, who represent Alaska and Louisiana, respectively, each took to the Senate floor Wednesday to decry their party's attempt to strip tax breaks from the top oil companies.

Landrieu bemoaned the "inherent unfairness" of closing the tax loophole, insisting that doing so "will not reduce gasoline prices by one penny.”

Begich chided the party for putting message over substance. "It is a gimmick, a gimmick to get the next week of activity, and get some press out there,” he said. “Picking on one industry because it sounds good, rates good in the polls, gets you a couple of headlines is not what the American people want us to do here. If anything, they're getting fed up with that. … Let’s stop the headline-grabbing and get serious about the energy security."

The infighting couldn't come at a worse time for Democratic leaders. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), is reportedly "leaning towards" voting to strip the tax breaks, citing "record profits" that come from the companies' "tax advantage," according to a tweet from CNN's Ted Barrett.

Democrats held a press briefing at a gas station Wednesday and felt like they were given a boost of momentum when a ConocoPhillips executive called ending the tax breaks "un-American."

"For ConocoPhillips to question the patriotism of those public officials who believe they do not deserve billions of dollars in wasteful subsidies is simply beyond the pale and I expect an apology from the CEO tomorrow at tomorrow's hearing," Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said at the gas station.

Nevertheless, said Begich, Congress shouldn't end “incentives for increased domestic energy consumption, some of which have been on the books for decades."

“The fact is, developing Alaska’s oil and gas resources buys our country decades of energy security by offsetting foreign imports from unfriendly countries," Begich said. "Consider a few examples, which I have here on the board next to me: developing offshore resources in the Chukchi – up in this area -- and the Beaufort Sea will produce 1.8 million barrels of oil a day. This is easily enough to offset oil imports from Saudi Arabia.”

Oil, however, is sold on on international market, so the notion that Saudi Arabian tankers would be diverted from American shores is a stretch.

"This will not reduce gasoline prices. So why are we doing it? Will it create jobs? No. It will actually hurt job production in the United States," Landrieu said. "Why don't you help us produce more, because we can do it, but we get shut down by bureaucracy, moratoriums, permatorium, rules, regulations, EPA, refuges. We can't even get free to produce the energy that we can produce for this country.”

Landrieu, who was elected in 1996, has taken nearly $3 million in oil and gas industry money during her career; Begich, who was elected in 2008, has taken in nearly $140,000.

Many politicians care only about their own welfare. Landreau is just another one. She just cares about her own job and screw the rest of us. Thanks.

BY GOSH.... There is a somewhat Honest Democrat or 2 out there...

Let us produce our own oil............... That's what I'vwe been saying, and mainly what I've been getting is a lot of name calling from sheep on here that refuse to think for themselves.

This country has every resource needed to be self-sustaining. Now we just need to figure out how to motivate the people that have ben brainwashed into believing the government knows what's best for them.

WOW... if they stick to their guns.... they will have to become independants like Senator Joe Lieberman

Get the federal government out of our lives and our pockets. This is a state issue if Louisiana supports the oil industry let them. I don't think there should be any business taxes at all. Let all of the profits go to the stock holders or owners and them tax them. Get the federal government back to the constitutional limits. Power to the people and the states!

since ive posted Ive been told maNY THINGS ABOUT THE WORLD CHANGING AND CHANGING WITH IT. i GUARANTEE THOSE WHO OWN AND CONTROL THE RESOURCES WILL USE THEIR INFLUENCE AND MONEY TO MAKE SURE WHAT EVER NEW COMES ALONG THEY WILL OWN AND CONTROL TOO. aS FOR GREEN BUSINESS PLEASE SHOW ME ONE THAT IS SUCESSFULL AND NOT BEING PROPPED UP BY GOVERNMENT FUNDS. AND AS FOR JOBS LEAVING THE COUNTRY THAT IS TRUE, WE PRICED OURSELVES OUT OF THE MARKET. Every empite crumbles from within. History shows us that again and again. I am afraid we are next. The next great world power will likely be CHINA and in the southern hemisphere Brazil. I guarantee they wont let GREEN POWER limit their growth. My point is we have enough resources where oil is concerned to limit the damage from outside. Ethinal is not the answer. The answer was discovered long ago but the major utilities and their owners make sure its supressed.Just like the hemp plant was too much compitition for the textile industy and they had it banned. any new resources that come about will get the same.Dr Mitzio Coku says 4 typs of societies should exist in this universe. We are still A typ Zero. If we ever grow up we can all do pretty well. But I dont think we will. We will all go out with A wimper.

Liberal no drill policies have the speculators making BILLIONS. You will all get a thank you card soon from them...they appreciate all the money your no drill policies have thrown there way. If we drilled in this country we wouldn't have to subsidize big oil and maybe, just maybe, we could make a transition to alternative fuels without bankrupting Americans in the process.
12:22 PM on 05/13/2011
There isn't enough oil in ANWR to cover the US demand for a month. Drilling more can only help cover a fraction of the demand, but the final problem is that no matter where the oil comes from, we are running out. But the really stupid thing about your comment as that we already DO DRILL in this country.
We are well past peak oil. We are cannot drill our way out of that fact. We will NEVER be able to supply all of our own oil. We don't NEED to subsidize big oil. We have done so because man of our politicians go elected off big oil campaign contributions. The oil companies have been making massive profits year in and year out. It's ludicrous to claim that they have ever need any kind of subsidy or tax break.

There should be no subsidizing of any business if a company can't make it on their own they should go out of business. That said if one industry is subsidized all should get their share. We have oil, coal, nuclear, natural gas etc.. We don't need to import any oil. If we just use ours. We can support our self if we start NOW! It will take some time but we could be energy independent in only a few years if the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT removed regulation and taxes from all business.

Landrieu is our resident Blue Dog Dem. She stands up for whoever is donating the most money to her campaign funds. I was almost glad when O'Keefe and friends tried to bug her office.

Not all Dems practice Democratic philosophy. They are not true Dems, but opportunists in Dem clothing. They should not be re-elected.

She's been down there since the oil spill... on the news... at first not saying too much, and then as time went on, she started edging more towards on the side of BP.. bought out? You bet!

It's not uncommon for members of Congress to change party affiliations while in office. Why don't these two just make the leap. It is obvious that they are both oil dependent in their states and will do whatever is needed to keep the black gold profits rolling in. Regardless of twhat the nation or their constituents want, it is sad to know that oil companies still carry members of Congress in their pockets.

Surely, it was never intended that closing the tax loopholes would lower the price of oil for the consumer?

Closing the loopholes, will right an inustice (against those who pay their fair share of taxes) and help reduce the budget defecit.

Begich and Landrieu, are attempting to defend the indefensible.
12:24 PM on 05/13/2011
Alaskans get checks every year because of oil proceeds. I'm not surprised at all that a senator from that disgustingly subsidized state would defend anything to do with the business.

So you would enjoy seeing the Inuit people just die.Not enoying the proceeds of the land this tribe has occupied peacefully, without western influence, well until oil and gold. You call it disgushing, I call it opporitunity, hey if your so opposed get an electric car. oohh my mistake then you would protest coal miners since they make over 20-25 per hour, you know puting their life on the line so you can turn on your computer And complian electronically.
