Michael Baze Dead: Jockey Found Dead In Vehicle At Churchill Downs

Michael Baze Dead Dies

By BETH CAMPBELL   05/10/11 10:14 PM ET   AP

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A 24-year-old jockey who rode this year's Kentucky Derby second-place finisher to his only win was found dead in his vehicle Tuesday at Churchill Downs.

Michael Baze of Glendora, Calif., was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m. EDT in his vehicle parked in the stable area of the track, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley said.

There were no signs of foul play and the case was being treated as a death investigation, Louisville police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said. An autopsy was planned.

Baze was a cousin of Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze, the all-time leading rider in thoroughbred racing, and son of retired jockey Mike Baze, Churchill Downs spokesman John Asher said. An uncle and another cousin are also riders, Asher said.

"Somebody coming out of that family, it always gets your attention when you see the Baze name," Asher said.

Michael Baze rode Nehro to a win Feb. 21 at Oaklawn. He was scheduled on at least one mount on Thursday at Churchill Downs, Asher said.

His last mount was April 29 at Keeneland, and he had not yet ridden in Churchill's spring meet, Asher said.

Baze, who had been riding since he was 16, was the leading rider at Arlington Park last year.

"This winter, he rode at Oaklawn, had 34 wins, had a very good meet, including a couple of stakes wins," Asher said.

Baze had 238 mounts this year with 34 wins, 41 seconds and 38 third places, and his mounts earned nearly $1.2 million, Asher said. He had 6,969 career starts with 918 wins with mounts earning $32 million.

Asher called Baze's death "a tremendous and unthinkable loss."

"He had so much potential down the road," Asher said. "It doesn't make sense to any of us right now."

NOT ONLY MIKE BAZE, WHY DIDNT ANYONE BOTHER TO PROPERLY SADDLE UP "ARCHARCHARCH"(takes 3 minutes),& SO HIS SADDLE SLIPPED AWAY IN THE "DERBY" RACE? WHY DIDNT THE TRAINER WRAP THE PRECIOUS ANKLE FOR SUPPORT SO HE MIGHT HAVE AVOIDED A BROKEN ANKLE???

We Should all Iniate "Mike Baze Memory meal, Day" before racing & racing day, MENU: lowfat cottage cheesre,Milk Or & juice,Wheat toast,ORANGE JUICE!:scrambled eggs, sliced tomatoes,Wheaties,or cereal with strawberries. This a "REQUIRED" item of weight allowance 2 lbs additional for proper strength. This is the same as at a "CORRECTIONAL" institute given prisoners. Time has come to adjust this outrageous requirement to have no food in a Hard working, sweating Jockeys horseracingevent..Have You seen them at weigh in,? having to go throw up first. This is INHUMANE. Even dogs on death row at shelters are provided a bowl of food.If we all comment,we're VOTERS,.This is Powerful. It will Help them all.I vote Mike Baze Meal"!. l"

WE LOVED HIM, WE WANT TO HELP OTHER JOCKEYS. ESPECIALLY NOT HAVING TO BE "BONERACKS!" CANT EVEN EAT A MEAL. tHEN THEY ADD EXTRA WEIGHT ON THE HORSE N TO "BALANCE" IT OUT.iT IS VERY STRENUOUS WITH NO FOOD IN YOUR BODY ALL WEEK.THEY SHOULD RAISE THE jOCKEY WEIGHT REQUIREMENT.

No it isn't. All things considered it's actually quite clean. Things are always fixed, if you lose.

So Baze risked his life 238 times in one year & his portion of earning: One million dollars. Which about half went to taxes, costs, soactually $500,000. Its a rip off. These jockeys shouls earn a major portion.10%,how is the horse even to win any at all without this talent?
Its time they got proper pay to risk their lives. Even actors managers who sit around, get well 20%,. It's time they recieve proper pay & are treated with decent shelter areas. Have you seen Santa Anita ?with their 100year old sheds for jockeys, & Hollywood park? ( "small Jail" rooms). This has to be brought out in the open. The press should write more of this young Star,so he is not lost in VAIN.

Actually, the horses won $1.2 million. He is lucky if he got 10%. Your sense of risking a life is a bit skewed I believe. You drive or ride on America's roads? Over 55,000 deaths last year. Walking down stairs kill 2,000 a year. I raise and breed horses. Those that get hurtare normally those that do ignorant things. I think he was well compensated for his endeavors. $120,000 in these economic times isn't chump change.

If the purse is in excess of a million, the jockey deserves more. Sorta like the NFL players. They risk life and limb and mental soundness and the fat cat owners walk away with the majority of the obscenely excessive loot.

Thats right,& there is a 20-1 longshot here(that won).He gave me a "gift"riding NEHRO so well, full force. He came from a legendary family of hard working horse people. Why does this Superstar have to be lost? He certainly was in perfect health to do all that with "Nehro."(only minutes before) We Demand to know, where are the camera video security, films here? why is this big star ALONE in his car? their are very puzzling, does not make any sense at all here.?? WE WANT AN ANSWER!

"He certainly was in perfect health to do all that with "Nehro."(only minutes before)"

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? He didn't ride Nehro in the KY Derby, Corey Nakatani did. Baze rose him in other races that he won, but not on Saturday. With the rest of his fans, I am also mourning Mchael Baze's death, but it seems that you are trying to be provocative. You obviously don't follow racing very closely, so why the post?

Why not wait till the autpsy is complete. This hero of yours could have died from a self inflicted drug overdose. Let the investigation run it's course. The last thing they need is the press and media interfering with the ongoing investigation.

A very dark and murky period from an earlier time has come calling on a promise. The threat was once given for a reason and with Michael Baze brushing off the threat along with any chance of conformity. The then 'numbers man' has come calling with his promise. Natural causes as a coroner's report may appear, but the situation may involve causes by a muscle man. Michael Baze to throw a race? Michael would not do that for anyone. Michael believed in winning and knowing the Mount's capabilities and winning builds reputation's while raising the competitive bar.

You used the pronoun 'us' in asking me to tell. A fan? Impossible as the noun (us) indicates a shared purpose of an ill-repute that is contained in the identification of 'job.' 'Us' is a latin word, translated in english means 'we' which is plural as describing the individuals as, I and others.

Anytime someone that young dies, especially someone with so much potential, it is a tragedy. My condolences and prayers are with the Baze family.

It is absolutely tragic what jockeys have to do to maintain weight. They have to sweat off pounds in a hot sauna, they are bulimic at least twice a day, their whole world is about weight. They have electrolytes failure all the time, take numerous enemas and suck the moisture out of their bodies any way they can. It is not a happy life, we should all feel sorrow for what the Jockey Clubs force them to do. There needs to be a change to how much weight a horse can carry, this was probably a preventable death.

So the jockey is treated nearly as bad as the horse?

The Jockey is treated FAR WORSE. The Horse is FED. Jockeys are not. How would you like to have to epend every ounce of strength in your bone racked starved body,on a wild two year old galloping 35 miles per hour ? This has to be Improved. DIE as a 24 year old trying to survive like this? This Is Inhumane, Extreme abuse & cruelty. We have to speak up for them,They provide winnings for people & entertainmentall over the world. We must suggest proper meals provided at our race tracks for Jockeys. We pay taxes..half the winnings go to support racing.

These are still babies! They shouldn't be started as early as they are... it's no wonder so many break down as young as they do.. You are demanding more weight and you don't think the weight they already carrying at high speeds had anything to do with the broken leg during the derby??? Or why there were two contenders pulled prior to the Derby???? If you are going to demand that they carry more weight, you need to change the age to much older, when the bones are still not growing!

Condolences to the family of an accomplished young man. His death makes no sense considering the years of brilliance ahead of him. Twenty-four years old - a tragedy.
