Homeless Man Found Sleeping On Rooftop Of Georgia Waffle House

New Topping At Georgia Waffle House: A Homeless Man Sleeping On The Roof

When you arrive at a Waffle House, you're hoping to find maple syrup on the flapjacks, not a homeless man snoozing on the roof -- in nothing but his undies.

That's exactly what authorities in Augusta, Ga., say they encountered on May 10, when they reportedly removed a man found unconscious atop the eatery. He was allegedly spotted there by an air conditioning repairman at around 12:15 p.m.

"We got there and find a gentleman on the roof who had stripped down to his skivvies," Captain Gerald Metzler of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office told AOL Weird News.

"He was unconscious and not speaking."

When officers were unable to revive the man, they called the fire department and asked for help bringing him down from the roof.

Metzler claims the man is a familiar face among local law enforcement.

"He is a regular one that we have issues with," Metzler said. "He is an alcoholic and he has some mental instabilities and things like that."

Contrary to other media reports, Metzler told AOL Weird News that "there was no evidence" the suspect had been living on the roof before his arrest.

Instead, investigators believe he climbed onto the roof by scaling some crates that had been left beside a cooler outside the eatery.

"We're guessing [he climbed onto the roof] sometime during the night," said Metzler. "He was probably drunk, fell asleep during the day, got hot and ended up taking off his clothes."

The suspect, whose name and age have not been released, was not injured and is currently being held at a local hospital's behavioral unit.
