The John Ensign Senate Ethics Report: 10 Sordid Facts We Learned

First Posted: 05/12/11 08:22 PM ET   Updated: 07/12/11 06:12 AM ET

Sweet fancy Moses, y'all. In my lifetime, I have read some sordid accounts of the many scandalous ways our elected officials have broken society's "sexx laws." Surely you remember the greatest hits: Mark Foley's hot chats with Congressional pages, Eric Massa's massage menages, diaper-dandy David Vitter's adventures with prostitutes, Vito Fossella's one-too-many drinks leading to the revelation of his one-too-many-families (I realize that's a "deep cut").

But this ethics report that's out today regarding the extramarital affair and attendant cover-up attempt by disgraced Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) is a singular achievement in debasement-narrative. Who knew that a Senate ethics report could be so illicit? And so depressing!

The gold standard, of course, remains "Supplemental Materials to the Referral to the United States House of Representatives Pursuant to Title 28, United States Code, Section 595 (c) Submitted by the Office of the Independent Counsel, September 9, 1998" -- better known as the "Starr Report." That compendium of Beltway scandal (which, for you young people, detailed an ongoing affair between President Bill Clinton and plucky intern Monica Lewinsky), was nigh upon indistinguishable from the screenplay to the movie Showgirls. This fact was not lost upon that screenplay's author, Joe Eszterhas, who later wrote a book titled American Rhapsody in which Bill Clinton's penis, "Willard" talks and raps. (He named it "Willard?" Eszterhas has obviously read Shakespeare's Sonnet 135!)

By contrast, the Ensign ethics report is just as fulsome a wade into the seamy side of American politics, but it's a lot more sad and cynical -- sort of like a season-long story arc of The Good Wife if The Good Wife was about less attractive, more depressing people and their sad friends and was intended to leave viewers with a tiny dead spot on their soul.

Mandy Jenkins has done us all a service today by condensing what I will call "the good parts" in a slideshow with pictorial dramatizations of the entire story of that time John Ensign allowed Doug and Cindy Hampton into his home, began an affair with Cindy, and made an effort to cover his tracks. It all culminates in a frantic chase and the most awkward Christmas ever. (And I mean ever.)

As I said, it's all very strange and depressing. I'd say that it's a cautionary tale, but that would imply that some of you might be dumb enough to attempt any of these things, and I just don't think that's possible.

Crime brings them together

The extramarital affair between Senator Ensign and Ms. Hampton began after the Hamptons moved into the Ensigns home following a burglary at their home.

I would like to know why there hasn't been a word about the federal investigation of John Edwards. Are they going to let him buy his way out of trouble or plea deal a felony down to a misdemeanor?
If a person has money, they can get away with anything.

WTF.....He is no longer politically viable....but Ensign had the affair in 2007 and still holds his head up, high and proud...where is his SHAME.......

They were in Love ... what's the big deal?

A $96,000 payment to get laid sounds like a lot, I'd donate my wife for $96k

When will people learn to separate people's public from private lives? Isn't that something we all learned from Clinton's multiple affairs? Clinton did a great job right? If cheating disqualifies someone from Public Office, who would run?

If it were only about the sex, what you are saying could be true - however, are you overlooking the parts where he breaks the law to get Doug Hampton a lobbying job, then misuses the power of his office to punish a company for not hiring Hampton. Then there's the sexual harassment part where Cindy Hampton tries to turn him away but he isn't dissuaded and she knows that both she and her husband serve at Ensign's pleasure (literally, in her case...). Also, doesn't it matter that this man - a right wing, family values, C-Street Christian hypocrite - proposes and votes to pass legislation that imposes values that he d

(continued) ...proposes and votes to pass legislation that imposes social values on everyone else that he doesn't even believe in enough to follow himself? I'm just tired of the Christian "social engineers" who too often have no/low standards for themselves and a different standard for everyone else.

In other words, Mr. Ensign is better than Bill Clinton or Al Gore running after his masseuse. It's a real disconnect, they all have power and great duty, but their small heads rule their emotions.

Why do we care if someone is having sex outside their marriage. That is between partners and none of anyone's business. I would rather have an intelligent, responsible representative who sleeps around than a fine upstanding christian who is faithful and has no clue (which is what we seem to be stuck with on both sides).
05:51 PM on 05/13/2011
Anyone who sleeps around set's themselves up to be blackmailed. That is not a good position for anyone who has power and influence to be caught in. The old Soviet Union was masterful in the way that they used that tool.

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum tipped off Ensign that Doug Hampton was going public on Planet Fox. ANOTHER co-conspirator..........sheesh!! It seems that the entire republican party knew what was going on, yet none reported Ensign's criminal activities.

Let me tell you a story that's unbelieveable. This married politician and some of his cronies took some staffers out drinking on this island. They get drunk and this horny married politician takes one of the staffers and they go for a ride in his car. He drives off a bridge into the water. He gets out of the car and leaves the girl to die. He stumbles around finds a place to sleep a few hours. Then 10 hours later he reports the "accident". The police investigate very little. A Grand Jury convenes, jurors are threatened. The grand jury fizzles after a couple of meaningless witnesses. The DA and Judge would not let damaging witnesses testify. THE FIX WAS IN. Rather than being charged with manslaughter, the politician is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and had his license suspended. The big broom swept the maslaughter under the carpet. Now, that's UNBELIEVEABLE that someone in our government could do that AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

So, are you suggesting that ex-Senator Ensign should not have resigned ? I honestly do think that there is a multi tiered system of justice in our country. Starting at the bottom of the heap is the poor, next is the working class, next is the wealthy, professional sport's players, Hollywood types, and at the top of the heap is politicians.
We have long been told that justice is blind. Only on the statue, is justice blind.

Apparently the Senate democrats do not believe in equal justice. Hang Ensign out to dry while the House democrats simply slapped Rangel's wrists and that very lightly. The democrats continue to prove that being a liberal democrat makes it possible to commit nearly any crime without suffering the consequences a normal citizen would be subject to.

Were is the "Nasty Post on John Edwards? Seems like they quickly cut their ties to him and decided not to comment. You are correct Karl - just another case of unequal justice by the liberal media.

Not a situation for a pile on. Not a place for defense either. The man will retire. He'll wear his shame. Not the first, not the last....from either side of the aisle. Those who choose to be saprophytic might consider channeling their energies towards more constructive pursuits. The nation could use some new ideas, desperately.

For all I give a rat's patootie, any adult can shtupp any other consenting adult they want, but Ensign committed actual crimes in a futile effort to keep his affaire de coeur quiet. Big difference. For instance, we neither know nor care who Rep. Jefferson may have been playing hide the salami with during that time, but he got caught taking bribes -- giving hilarious new meaning to "cold, hard cash" -- and rightly got sent down for it.

And I'd like to see Coburn get his just deserts, too.
