Mitt Romney Rejects Demands To Apologize For Health Care Plan

WASHINGTON -- Potential Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney rejected conservative critics who say he should apologize for approving a government mandate to obtain health insurance when he was governor of Massachusetts. Romney defended his actions in a Thursday speech to doctors in Michigan.

"A lot of pundits around the nation are saying I should stand up and just say, 'This whole thing was a mistake,'" Romney said, speaking at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center. "I presume a lot of folks would conclude that if I did that that would be good for me politically."

"But there's only one problem with that. It wouldn't be honest," Romney said. He admitted later in his remarks that he considered the health care plan a political asset when he ran for president four years ago, but said he realizes now that it is a liability.

Romney spent half of his speech defending the Massachusetts plan -- which required the six percent of the state's citizens who were not insured to obtain health insurance or pay a "bond" of roughly $125 a month -- before turning to a critique of President Obama's health care overhaul passed last year by Congress.

He admitted that some of the aspects of the state plan, which has already led to government price controls to try to rein in costs, have not worked like he had hoped, but concluded: "Overall am I proud of the fact that we did our best for our people and got people insured? Absolutely."

Romney appealed to the conservative belief in Federalism -- based on the 10th amendment to the Constitution -- to defend his actions in Massachusetts. The amendment says that state governments should handle all powers not enumerated to the federal government in the Constitution.

"Our plan was a state solution to a state problem, and [Obama's health law] is a power grab by the federal government to put in a one-size-fits-all plan across the nation," Romney said. He argued that the "bond" requirement in Massachusetts was "a state decision ... to insist on personal responsibility."

But that argument has not been accepted by many conservatives, and the instant feedback to Romney's speech was less than kind from conservatives on Twitter.

The National Review's Jonah Goldberg wrote that Romney was auditioning for the job of David Axelrod, a former top White House adviser to Obama who remains an outside political consultant to the president.

The Wall Street Journal took a big swing at Romney in its pages Thursday, saying that because of his law Massachusetts is spending 40 percent of its budget on health care, versus 30 percent when he signed the bill into law, and that hospitals are giving even higher rates of uncompensated health care than they were then.

Robert Moffit, the director of the conservative Heritage Foundation's Center for Health Policy Studies who worked with Romney on his plan several years ago, told The Huffington Post that Romney "tried to solve a real problem."

"But unfortunately things did not work out for him as he I think he expected," Moffit said. "There was genuinely bad faith implementation. What he wanted, the law did not deliver."

I watched the M-Joe on msnbc, and like most commentators and poeple with money, just don`t get it! Before you corruptly touch medicare, you must do the following; doctors have to lower their prices 50% (the same shamefull amount they raised in ONLY 10 years, corruption) and quit taking money from the drug industry!!!! Politicians must take a pay cut (a third) with absolutely no lobby money, and NO MORE LOBBIEST! These wars are making the corporations and politicians rich and us poor. The military which is also corrupt by stealing tax payers money( for military toy`s not needed and for things they don`t tell us, these poeple must grow up and quit starting wars for profits), must take a large cut!!!! The military must quit using a false patriotism for greedy industry profit, And the oil ,drug subsidies must go, very unamerican ,but most of all immorall to the highest level. This is truly a corrupt nation with the Joe Scarbourough`s telling the American poeple they have to put up with this after they know the corruptness of money that made wallstreet, housing industry, wars(military),drug industry, and the politician`s very rich and the greed they produced made us poor! So now they`re telling the American poeple what`s good for us, I THINK IT`S TIME TO TELL THEM WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!

Romney will win with his indivisible 25% voter block of psychosis-free Republicans, while the top-5 narcissistic crazies will split the remaining 75% of the vote with 15% each. An easy call.

Why are insurance companies Anti-trust law exempt? To believe that you would have to believe that all the bussiness an insurance co does is solely in that state. NO insurance co does inter-state bussiness. Does that sound realistic to anyone? Even the fox news, corporate supporting right wing hate crowd can't deny that. Wait, of course they can, their hero draft dodging GW Bush said that they don't deal with reality, they make up their own reality.

This guy flops more than a fish out of water. Who is he planning to work for? Himself, of course. Like every repubconbagger out there, he will say whatever he needs to say to get elected. Once there he will pander only to the wealthy.

Repubconbaggers screamed "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs" to get elected. Once there they start attacking women, children, education, unions, gays and civil rights. Not a single bill aimed at helping with jobs.

Everyone can get fooled once. Those that continue to vote for these known liars are more like masochists than anything else. Self-destructive cretins that want to make the rest of the country as miserable as they are.

Perhaps they wouldn't be so miserable if they let go of their bigotry, racism and hatred for all things not christian KKK.

Probably not.

Poor "Mitt". He's worked for a long time for this shining moment that is quickly tarnishing in the toxic stew that is GOP (Gathering of Phonies) politics. He's got the looks and the patented smile and that "touch of gray", all packaged up for success in a "normal" campaign. Trouble is, there is nothing normal about the modern Repubs. It's more like a circular firng squad. He'd be better off offering his services to his country after the 2012 election, working for the Obama administration, showing his centrist bent and doing something BENEFICIAL to the American people...

Don't apoligise for doing the right thing in MA Mitt. It does not matter what you say, anyway, for the right-wing nuts in the GOP already hate you.

The World Health Organization's ranking
of the world's health systems.
Source: WHO World Health Report - See also Spreadsheet Details (731kb)

The World Health Organization's ranking of the world's health systems was last produced in 2000, and the WHO no longer produces such a ranking table, because of the complexity of the task.

SEE? IT SAYS "LAST PRODUCED IN 2000, AND THE WHO NO LONGER PRODUCES" ....IT.

1/6/2010 at NEJM.org: In 2006 the U.S. ranks No. 1 in terms of health care spending per capita but ranked 39th for infant mortality, 42nd for adult male mortality, 43rd for adult female mortality, and 36th for life expectancy. Further comparisons indicate that the U.S. is falling further behind each year. So I guess 37th looks pretty good in the scheme of things

As far as health care technology goes, I'll guess the US is pretty close to the top. I'm also guessing the reason for these abysmal rankings is that, what?- sixty million or so of our citizens have no access to healthcare except the emergency room--or they have a choice of either dying from treatable ailments, or being financially ruined for life.

Claireify --- As Christians, we've done our share of study about Mormonism, especially since my husband has taught for 14 years as a Bible Study teacher.

I know that I won't ever become a Mormon, there are strong differences in PARTS of what we believe. But to a large degree, they share our Old Testament beliefs. I've worked with a Mormon lady who was also an RN. My daughter has Mormons as neighbors, and you won't find more honest or trustworthy people. They are moral and raise good moral children with family values.

Knowing that you're going to apply this to having a Mormon as a presidential candidate, so I'm going to answer you in kind. Just as when John Kennedy ran, people showed their ignorance and jumped to silly conclusions like "the Pope will be running our country!!!"

Of course it was nonsense!

I DON'T CARE if we have a Mormon for president, knowing what people of high moral character they are and that they would never deprive me of my own faith is enough for me.

We believe in FREEDOM OF RELIGION in the USA, and as such, as long as a religion is non-violent toward others where doctrine is concerned, we have no right or reason to deprive anyone of running for the presidency or any office.

There is only one religion that I would object to.; It's radical, violent, and promoting jih_ad, worldwide now.

How could they have accurate accounts of death rates that way? Only the USA is straight forward. I can ASSURE you that we're not 37th in healthcare!

THAT WAS ELEVEN YEARS AGO! WHY DON'T THEY GIVE YOU TODAY'S CURRENT STATS SO YOU'LL KNOW?

Your previous post about the reasons why the Healthcare bill will be detrimental are ridiculous, in that, those are the exact same issues the medical community is already dealing with from insurance companies. Doctors, not you - the RN - have had major issues with malpractice insurance, patient care has been on the decline, patients are already prematurely released from the hospital, etc., etc., etc. And all of this mandated by our wonderfully glorious insurance companies!

jigou----- in response to your comment about healthcare, have you read the bill that passed? Do you know why so many object to it, and how varied the reasons are? I'm an RN and have read it, as have most doctors. A group of specialists in our metroplex took a week and in the evenings, gave talks - questions about it. Major concerns are how the quality of our healthcare is going to be compromised so badly, how privacy will be invaded, how non-medical committees will be making our health decisions based on charts given to figure the most economic benefit for the GOVT (not the patient), cost-cutting or eliminations,[[ inadequate testing, labs and too early release from the hospital, all in brackets can get docs fined, and/or imprisoned if they violate, even if they think a patient isn't "routine," ]], inadequate staffing, lack of incentive to go into a med. field, due to govt. control of jobs, pay, conditions, etc. And it's expected that about 40% of our docs will retire right before it goes into effect, rather than risk quality and lives of patients. Canadian docs had been moving here b/c they make 40% less in Canada. There's far more to know than you apparently do. Talk to your doctor about it, especially if you're over about 45.

hilarious stuff, too bad i think you are serious. "how dare we join the rest of the modern world." do you even listen to yourself, or are you incapable of thought ? the united states is the only country in the developed world, besides south africa, that doesn't provide healthcare to all of its citizens. chew on that while you struggle to understand why we currently rank so low in the list of countries quality. we were number one once, and the answer certainly isn't to remain stagnating in the mud, or to return to previous policies , but to join the rest of the modern world. it is preposterous you would even oppose such a socially and economically benificial change.

87 cents of every dollar spent on Healthcare goes to insurance companies or some other parasite group. that leaves 13cent of ever dollar that goes to actual healthcare and HUMAN BEINGS.

As a Dr told me recently, "the US healthcare system is great for wall st and insurance companies, terrible for people."

I get the feeling that you would also agree that the only people that get an education are the ppl that can afford it.

Face it dems.

It was the democrat bill on health care that was passed in Romney's state. Romney didn't author one word of it, but you'd sure like to make people think he did.

He has nothing at all to apologize for, and it's a far cry from a state trying a healthcare plan and the govt. imposing one on all Americans without allowing time for it to even be read first.
