'I Love Sitcoms': New Web Series By Sergio Cilli Mocks Situation Comedies & Their Audience (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/14/11 02:45 PM ET Updated: 07/14/11 06:12 AM ET

LA-based writer and comedian Sergio Cilli (InfoMania on Current TV) has introduced a new Web series where he celebrates the banality of the American sitcom.

Embodying the sort of lowest common denominator sensibility that by-the-numbers family fare such as "Melissa & Joey" cater to, Cilli is the everyman of TV watchers: hopelessly drawn in to every hackneyed plot, amused by every ham-fisted joke, and deliciously scandalized by the slightest dalliance with anything approaching sexuality.

In short, this series is brimming with understated brilliance, and makes us want to shout, "Oh, no he didn't!" if only we could do it without having to punch ourselves in the face. More, please!

I like the idea of this web-show and the character. i think it can go A LOT further. there was a bit someone did a while ago on the web of a guy laughing along sarcasticlly to "two and a half men". it was very well done. This guy, Cilli, can do the same and do interviews and maybe have guest stars (either very talented impressionists or perhaps he can convince real stars of old sit coms to come on and play along). he can do an awkward mock interview like zach galifinakis does on "between two ferns" or he can play the typical american to the hilt in the way colbert does the right wing idiot type. I think he should play up his premise further by having segments where he writes to the creators about his favorite episode and makes suggestions. doh! take a page from colbert and see how many areas the character can play in.

This is why Arrested Development failed.

I really can't imagine HOW people find those sort of sitcoms funny. It's so excruciating to me.

I will try again tomorrow.

That was funny, but I can't see it continuing to be funny after, say, 12 minutes.

I find myself wondering why anybody would remake 'who's the boss'.

Was it such a colossal money maker that to NOT do so defied all logic?

Explaining bad sitcoms is not great satire.

Obviously you did not get it.

bmora,

No, the sitcom thing was simply not funny.
There was no cleverness or originality to an
idiot holding forth about bad sitcoms.

If it was funny, I would have said so,

I Loooove Sergio!

As the old saying would go, "it is only at the tree loaded with fruit that the people throw stones".

I like that saying. I don't think it fits here though. If this were a successful sitcom I would agree with you.

What's all this brouhaha?

Satire so subtle that it isn't.

This web series is only slightly funnier than the sitcoms it's making fun of.

Hilarious! Sitcoms are the lowest form of comedy geared toward non-thinkers. No wonder some of them have been running for so long.

That may be true but I have to say that 30 minutes of mindless nonsense is all I have time for between kids and work and returning client calls and play dates and homework and after school activities and cooking dinner and cleaning the house and and laundry and bath time and bedtime. Mom and dad then turn in the tv for a few minutes of mindless entertainment that does not involve dead bodies or adult content. The choices are rather limited as is the time :) There use to be a day when I could not only afford a solid hour of tv time, but I did not have to worry about whether or not it was serious adult drama or a documentary that contained scenes that are not appropriate for young viewers. When the time come in which I have that luxury once more, I will probably be going to bed at 7:00 pm anyhow right after watching some flute concert on PBS LOL! But I do have to say that I have no clue which show he is talking about and after seeing this clip, I highly doubt I will be seeking it out.
