Sony Brings PlayStation Network Back Online -- With Some Conditions

Sony Playstation

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/14/11 11:52 PM ET Updated: 07/14/11 06:12 AM ET

Following a data breach that exposed the personal information of 100 million users and shut down access to the PlayStation Network for weeks, Sony has announced that access to the PlayStation network is being restored.

Sony wrote in a blog posted Saturday evening that the process of restoring access to the network would begin in a select number of countries, then expand further, with all locations worldwide back online by the end of May. The Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East will see their access restored first, while users in Japan and other Asian countries will be forced to wait longer.

"While we understand the importance of getting our services back online, we did not rush to do so at the expense of extensively and aggressively testing our enhanced security measures. Our consumers' safety remains our number one priority," said Sony executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai in a video released by the company (see below). "We want to assure our customers that their personal information is being protected with some of the best security technologies available today, so that everyone can feel comfortable enjoying all that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer."

Some states in the U.S. are seeing their access to the PlayStation network restored earlier than others, and Sony has posted a map that it will update as additional locations go back online. The company says all U.S. users should be able to get back online within several hours.

Sony requires PS3 users to update their firmware prior to going back online, and also recommends that users change their passwords.

Technologizer notes that in terms of the potential loss of data and the downtime suffered by users, Sony's PlayStation outage seems likely to rank among the worst ever.

"Okay, it’s close to three weeks later. The PlayStation Network outage continues, it involves the leakage of personal data, and we don’t know when it’ll end. Anyone want to argue that it’s not the single worst fiasco of this type ever?" writes Technologizer.

Though the network is -- according to Sony -- secure, it remains to be seen whether it can recover from the lengthy outage and data breach in order to retain its users and prevent them from defecting to competing services.

"It's hard to say what's worse for gamers: this lengthy outage - one of the worst on record - or the compromise of their personal data," notes ReadWriteWeb. "Either way, Sony will have a long road ahead to win back the trust of gamers, who have a wide variety of options for other console or handhelds games." According to Reuters, "some users have said the prolonged outage has prompted them to switch to rival Microsoft's Xbox Live games service."

"Please know that we are doing everything we can to fully restore network services around the world and to regain your trust over the days weeks and months to come," said Hirai.

According to Joystiq, the Sony services that will be up and running by May 31 include the following:

Sign-in for PlayStation®Network and Qriocity services, including the resetting of passwords Restoration of online game-play across PS3 and PSP Playback rental video content, if within rental period, of PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service on PS3, PSP and MediaGo Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity, for current subscribers, on PS3 and PC Access to 3rd party services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB.tv 'Friends' category on PS3, including Friends List, Chat Functionality, Trophy Comparison, etc PlayStation Home

I have a PS3 and an Xbox. I, personally, like the Xbox controller better, but I have big hands. I like the PS3 interface much better than the Xbox. And I like it that the PS3 on-line game play is free, while you have to pay for Xbox Live! They are both great gaming machines. It just depends on which games you want to play. Some are exclusive to the consoles, so if you want to play something like Little Big Planet, or Ratchet & Clank, you have to have a PS3. But I really like that you can plug a headset into the Xbox controller and talk to your gaming buddies while playing (the PS3 setup is a bit messier :-(

I am very happy that the PSN is back up. I have owned both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 is a better product and I have never had the red ring of death like on my old Xbox 360. I bought a brand new Xbox 360 for my daughter and I just had to send it back last week under warranty because the disk drive would not open. Let's remember that the Xbox Network got hacked too. My main problem with Sony was their horrible handling of communications to their user base.

so you pick a system where the designer built in a red ring of death, so when your system craps out, you can keep buying a new one over and over again. definitely no brains there.

Why trust Sony now? Obviously, they don't have it together.

LOL. My husband bought his PS last year and he refused to enter credit card info. He buys the prepaid Visas out the wazoo. He woke me up very early this morning to let me know (I could really care less) that the system was back online.

That's pretty wise, from a security standpoint.

One thing he can do which would make it easier on him, I heard American Express has some program which will give out a temporary CC number to be used for online purchases.

I know those prepaid cards aren't cheap (I got one a while back for a gift, figured it would be better than giving a stupid gift card, boy was that wrong), this might save him some money.

Discover also will give you a temporary one-use CC number for online use.

Actually, I use prepaid PSN cards, myself. They have no fees.

Agreed. There is no reason to use CCs when you can use the prepaid cards.

Remember that in Japan MS is still in 3rd place. WW Sony rules. Breach was a horrible thing as was Wikileaks. Hopefully some idiot did breach for fun. Hopefully no cc info is ever used to hurt people. This was done by a fun seeking computer nerd who hated Sony. Hopefully FBI, etc. can find the breach as well as the hackers. Took 10 years to find Bin Laden. Did Bin Laden have a PS3, Wii or Xbox 360 in his compound? LOL....

Sony is still in the business position that success is bleeding their company dry.

They were losing tons of money on each PS3 sold, and now they're spending tons of money by giving away their online service for free.

MS is pretty smart.  They put plenty of time and energy making XBox Live into a great service worth paying money for, and now they have people who will upgrade to the next generation of their console as an afterthought, because the console is just a vehicle to the service.
02:19 PM on 05/15/2011
MS only started turning a profit on its xbox division about two years ago, that red ring fiasco costs MS billions.

Razors and razor blades. Give away the razor and make money on the blades. PS3 originally lost $$, newer versions have better margins. You sound like a MS employee. Good luck upgrading to Xbox 720 next year.

I still believe PS3 was something thrown together in a few months, with the sole purpose being to force Sony's customers into being early adoptors for Blu-Ray.

Ok. People didn't stop buying Chrysler cars when the K car was such a flop.
I like Sony products. I love my PS3. Unlike many others, I don't LIVE on it.
Have some other fun stuff to do in your life and this kindof thing won't really
matter as much. I never store my CC info. Ever. Anywhere. Take the extra
60 seconds it takes to enter it when you need to. Buy prepaid Visas or even
the PlayStation cards. You don't have to have that game right now. You can
wait a day or two. Geez.

I refuse to buy those cards. That whole business model, the one started with MS points on XBox, is a scam. It is just a way for them to get $15 out of you when you're buying something that is $10.

I love buying points cards.  Since retailers count them as games, you can get them on sale all the time, unlike money.

It doesn't seem like a scam to me, seeing how I'm getting stuff cheaper than if they just slapped a dollar amount on it.

Does NO ONE get that corporations are frequently behind viruses and issues like this? I wouldn't be surprised, seeing as how millions are at stake, if Microsoft (the kings of "I want it ALL") were behind this on some level.

All I know is I will NEVER feed into a monopoly (ESP one that makes VASTLY inferior products) willingly.

Idiot, viruses are made by bored hackers and rarely by corps or states (the one that attacked iran for example). Seriously, a conspiracy involving Micorsoft is so ridiculous I don't even know what to say.

Hey Sony!!! If I buy a Playstation it's MINE, not yours Mine. That is the basis of all of their problems Sony has delusions about Ownership, they think that just because they built the Playstation you can not do anything but bring it home, set it in your living room and play lice nice children,,,They forget this is America Land of Hot Rods, even with $4+ gasoline people buys cars to take them apart and rebuild them how they envision them. Imagine spending $30K on a Mustang and being told you couldn't change a thing with it? This is America when we buy something it's ours not the makers and if we want to fiddle with it then we Da.mn well ha.ck it it to pieces and build it even better.
Long way to tell Sony, if you don't like your sites Hac.ked by Anonymous release your Playstation to the people who bought it in the first place!!!
