Boehner To Obama: Let's Make A Deal On Debt Limit

Boehner

First Posted: 05/15/11 01:15 PM ET Updated: 07/15/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- One day before the federal government is scheduled to reach its debt limit, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he is ready to make a deal to raise the debt ceiling and that Congress does not have to wait until the "eleventh hour" to do so.

In an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday, Boehner conceded that Congress will need to eventually raise the debt ceiling, which currently stands at $14.29 trillion. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner wrote in a letter to Congress earlier this month that the nation will reach its debt limit on May 16, but can rely on “extraordinary measures” to prevent from defaulting on its loans until August. Geithner wrote that default by the U.S. "would have a catastrophic economic impact that would be felt by every American," and other economists have said that failing to raise the debt ceiling would have a disastrous effect on the markets.

Despite these warnings, many members of Congress have said that they will not vote for a bill that raises the debt ceiling unless it is paired with other efforts to get the nation’s deficit under control, such as major spending cuts or changes to entitlement programs. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) reiterated on Sunday that he sees the pending debt limit deadline as a “great opportunity” to talk about spending.

McConnell has said he will vote against any debt-limit deal if it does not include long-term cuts to entitlment programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.

"Rather than thinking of this as a crisis, I think of this as an opportunity to come together," he said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” adding that he would not support tax increases as part of the deal.

Boehner has also ruled out tax increases as part of a deal for grappling with the long-term deficit, despite appeals by Democrats to use revenue-increasing measures to avoid some program cuts.

On “Face the Nation,” Boehner invited President Barack Obama to join him in tackling entitlement spending, alluding to the House GOP budget that made major cuts to Medicare.

“Let’s lock arms and we'll jump out of the boat together,” Boehner said.

Boehner said last week he wants the debt-ceiling deal to include trillions of dollars in cuts, equal to the amount the debt ceiling will be raised, but he has been mum on his proposed timeline for those changes.

Still, he said it will be necessary to raise the debt limit, despite criticisms from other GOP politicians that raising the debt ceiling will enable more unnecessary spending. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, for instance, said on Sunday she opposes any increase to the debt limit, telling ABC’s “This Week” that Congress should “absolutely not” raise the ceiling.

"I think it is necessary, but I understand the doubts," Boehner said. "At some point it's clear to me that we have to raise the debt ceiling."

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the  Read More...

Boehner & Obama won't work together. Boehner & the rest of the Republicans refuse to realize that taxes on the wealthy should be increased. Cutting programswill only do more harm than good.

I'm thinking...where does one find a decent guillotine these days? Seriously, how much longer before we hear the comment akin to "Let them eat cake." from Boehner and McConnell? Would it be in poor taste, well, yes, I know it is, but....Mitch McConnell is the most undesirable man ever. Ugly, Mean, Uncaring, Hates women. Hates poor people. Hates minorities. Despises the least of his brothers.... Yeah....not attractive. In demeanor or looks.

"Republicans are calling for spending cuts running to the trillions of dollars and including welfare and health programmes for the elderly and poor.

White House economic adviser Austan Gooldsbee called their plans "insane".
Republicans say they will not discuss raising taxes - something Obama and many Democrats say has to be part of the solution.

Economists say the tax cuts put in place by President George W Bush are to blame for around half of the current US debt. Health spending and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are also major factors."

PS If the link doesn't work, google "sky news" then search for us debt.

Damn it Mr. President...Your the Commander in Chef.... If the Republicans want to play "chicken" to get spending cut give them what they want. Order the immediate withdrawl of troops in both wars, cancel all pending military contracts and and initiate another round of base closings to generate these cuts.

Yes, this is a ridiculous proposal, but then, so is allowing our goverment to default to make a point.

It happens all the time. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one it happens to. Anytime a person can't debate someone with facts and evidence demonstrating why they don't agree with you, they default to name calling, or pointing out minor misspellings or grammar errors.

“Let’s lock arms and we'll jump out of the boat together,” Boehner said.

Not so fast, Boehner! If republicans continue to try and steer the USS America off the course of recovery and she hits an iceberg, there will be no jumping off of the boat. You're goin down with the ship buddy. Make no mistake about it!

Boehner's Plan to President Obama.........Give us (REPUBLICANS) everything we want, and you have a Deal. How radical. I'm sure they stayed up late into the wee hours thinking of this one.

It is amazing to me how Republicans seem to think that raising the debt limit is a favor that they do for Democrats given the number of their constituents that are feeding at the government trouigh. (Read Thomas Frank's "The Wrecking Crew" and Arianna Huffington's "Pigs at the Trough") They seem to think that average people should care more about the credit worthiness of the United States than Wall Street, the financial sector and the rest of business.
The credit worthiness of the United States should not be a bargaining chip. Pass a clean extension and then let's have the budget debate this country needs over the summer.
However, I am at the point that if Republicans want to reduce capitalism to pile of rubble, then let's have at it. Maybe we can then build something better in its place that will benefit everyone instead of just a small minority at the top.

When Boehner says "Let's make a deal", does he mean let's make a deal or his usual do what I say or we'll mope, pout and obstruct for as long as humanly possible?

Obama will drag this out like he did the last time. He just wants to spend money. He isn't interested in America.

The POTUS has already set the expectations for this issue.

It is up to the House and Senate to work out the details.

Until that happens the POTUS can only wait.

BTW the super highways, bridges, dams and other things were built by the US selling debt.
Debt is what countries use to build and recover from disasters.

It's nice that Boehner is willing to agree to raise the debt limit, like they need to do ,
but if they cut medicare or medicaid , it would hurt a lot of people & 80% agree we
need to keep them without cutting them .

News flash. So do most Democrats. Watch a bit more carefully the Kabuki theater in Washington. The Republicans know that regardless how abusive of individual rights they are, their base will vote Republican. Thus they are free to stump speech for protecting the rights of the Oppressed Plutocracy from which they obtain their campaign financing.

The Democrats must be a bit more cautious, because most of their base still believes the Democratic Party represents the common man. However, the Democrats cannot afford to speak out for the common man, because doing so would jeopardize their relationship with the Plutocrats who finance their campaigns -- the same Plutocrats who finance Republican campaigns. So the Democrats play hide-under-their-desks while the Republicans stump for the interests of the Oppressed Plutocracy. Voila! All voices in Washington are speaking for the Oppressed Plutocracy, and none are speaking for the common man.

Thank about it. When was the last time you heard more than an isolated Democrat or two speak out for the interests of the nation or the people over the interests of the Plutocracy? I.e., our "two-party system" is nothing but a thinly-veiled ruse disguising one-party Plutocratic rule.

McConnell and Boehner want more tax cuts for the rich-they just voted for Ryan's plan to do it. They want lethal cuts to social programs so middle class withers; they have purposefully decimated the deficit with tax cuts and the Estate Tax. (The 2008 Estate Tax alone reduced the deficit by $25 billion.)

Demonizing the payment of taxes by the rich after the deficit carnage of the Bush years simply defies any kind of rational logic. The GOP are the Party of Change-more money for the rich, poverty for everyone else.

I invite Speaker Boehner to "grow a pair", stand up to the Tea Party and do what is right for this nation. Stop playing Corporate pocket pool and end the tax breaks the super wealthy have enjoyed while the least able bleed.

The super wealthy deserve special favor because, as their wealth proves, they are better than everyone else. Well, if you ignore that they were all born super wealthy and haven't had to earn a thing in their lives, that is. But they're STILL super special, by God!

Query: At what point does a Plutocracy such as the U.S. become an Aristocracy?

Now. It already is, we are all just unwilling to admit it. We are all just servants to the rich. Everything we do benefits them somehow.
