Sea Lion Killing Authorized In Northwestern U.S.

Sea Lion Killing Oregon Washington

PORTLAND, Oregon (By Teresa Carson) - Washington and Oregon won authorization from a federal agency on Friday to kill sea lions eating endangered salmon at the Bonneville Dam, angering animal rights advocates.

The move marks the second time the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service has approved killing the sea lions, which travel up the Columbia River to eat salmon trying to pass the dam on their way to spawn.

The Humane Society of the United States fought the first authorization, in 2008, winning a ruling from the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that NOAA must explain why it allowed fishermen to catch the salmon but not sea lions.

The NOAA has said in response that it can limit the number and type of fish caught by the fishermen, but not so the indiscriminate sea lions.

"This is not an easy decision for our agency to make, but a thorough analysis shows that a small number of California sea lions preying on salmon and steelhead are having a significant effect on the ability of the fish stocks to recover," William Stelle, NOAA Fisheries Service Northwest regional administrator William Stelle said in a written statement.

Oregon and Washington may only remove sea lions known to be eating salmon and only 85 per year can be killed.

Sharon Young, marine mammal issues field director for the Humane Society, told Reuters the group was studying NOAA's order and may go back to court to challenge it again.

"Sea lion predation represents only 2.4 percent of the salmon run this year," Young said.

"This is shameful that they are distracting attention from real problems they could be addressing," she said. "This is one of the least important things they can to do address salmon recovery."

Since 2008, 26 sea lions have been euthanized and 10 were placed at zoos and aquariums. Usually about 70-80 huddle around the dam every year, NOAA said, estimating that they ate more than 5,000 salmon last year.

The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department does not have a start date for when it might begin trapping and euthanizing the mammals, Rick Hargrave, a deputy administrator said.

They have been marking and observing the sea lions since March, so they can identify the most egregious offenders.

California sea lions are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, but NOAA said the population of about 238,000 is "healthy and stable."

Gee... I wonder why the salmon are endangered. We humans disturb the natural balance and then, in a sloppy, self-serving damage-control effort, punish other animals.

Unethical on top of unethical.

You could not have said it better... We talk about animal population controls but we never discuss how out of control human population is... We are bulldozing everything in our way. We are a destructive, arrogant and self-serving race.

approved killing of 85 sea lions per year just because sea lions NEED to survive by eating salmons.. why not take the option of ENDING THE SALMON HUNT instead of forbidding these creatures from finding their own way to survive? I admit, salmons are good but what I know too is, humans have thousands and millions of means/resources to live, so why limit the wildlife from their inadequate selection in order for them to survive? (I wonder when would be the word ENOUGH rise in the human race..)

I'm very very upset by this disturbing news!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope they don't kill the sea lions; I love sea lions. I'm glad I'm a vegan and I don't eat salmon. I'd rather leave the salmon for the sea lions to eat! Yet another benefit of following a vegan lifestyle...

Oh boy another bright idea because the sea lions need to eat but no we can’t have that. Humans consume too much food and waste too much food. Salmon is good food for us but I think moving the sea lions to another location would be ideal. Oh is that too much money? Right, and it is not problem raising our tax dollars and watching CEO’s steal money, and banks fraud homeowner’s etc.

Feds Authorize Killing Of Sea Lions............

SHOULD AUTHORIZE THE KILLING OF EXCESS POPULATION INSTEAD....they're the ones creating the problem.

Will you volunteer yourself or your family first? You know, to thin out the human herd that is creating the problem?

We have too many screwed up humans that should be pushed off the planet as it is. We consume too much food as it is. Notice how obese people are?

Exactly. There is a serious need for population control worldwide.

Glad to read such comments - it's like a taboo to even mention this. We caped 8 billion recently. Why are we never the problem??? What is wrong with this race? We are sick...

You sure wouldn't want to limit fishing by commercial fishermen in favor of sea lions doing what nature drives them to do - which is eat fish. Maybe a ban on salmon fishing until stocks retrun to normal would be a better answer than killing marine mamals. Establishing more marine sanctuaries would also help like the Channel Islands in California. The fish populations have been rebounding in this area because of the ban on fishing in the sanctuary. Moving the sea lions to a marine sansturary as a last resort would be far more humane than killing them. Here is the email address to voice your complaint on the pending slaughter of salmon loving sea lions.

Good. Kill the one that stole my bluefin tuna then sat out there and dined on it while laughing at me.

The sea lions have to eat salmon and other fish to survive. They are only doing what is natural, in their own habitat.
They should not be killed for this. Please do not kill them!
Humans do not have to fish for salmon to survive. In my book the sea lions have more right to the fish than humans have. Leave the sea lions alone!
Oregon the World is watching!

I didn't think Crist was all that bad, but he was in the wrong party.  Why, if Scott has such a criminality resume, did he ever get elected.  What did he promise the state in order to be elected.  Seems almost too transparent to ignore.

Wrong thread...:-) by the way I thought Crist was a good choice, too bad he nor Meeks would throw their support behind the other.
