Animal Shelters Use Social Media To Garner Donations, Find Homes

Animal Shelters

Around the country, social media have helped animals find homes and help. From 11th hour adoptions of pets on death row to finding funds for shelters on the brink of closing, social networking is helping others make a difference with a click of a button.

Orange Patch reports that animal shelters around Connecticut are using social media to locate homes for pets. Lauren Dobkowski, administrator of the Meriden Humane Society's Facebook page, told Patch that the accessibility of social media makes a big difference.

"Facebook and Petfinder have proven to be very useful tools in helping us find forever homes for our dogs and cats... They allow us to reach people who may never have walked through our doors if they hadn't seen an animal that interested them online."

Others have used social media to garner funds for adoption houses nearing financial disaster. Adopt A Rescue Pet Sanctuary in Amargosa Valley, Nev. launched a Facebook campaign to raise $75,000 to save its shelter from closing. In just 30 days, the organization raised over $55,000.

Elizabeth Davis-Rubin told KLAS that others have been inspired by their technique:

"There are other rescue organizations in other states that are actually using our social networking model as their model and have started doing the same thing," Davis-Rubin said.

Facebook even helps animals that are a heartbeat away from being euthanized.

Two Facebook pages, "Pets on Death Row" and "Urgent Part 2", feature pictures of animals slated to be euthanized in New York and contact information is given to adopt them.

Sherry Reisch, a volunteer with the Humane Society of New York, told Manhattan's DNAinfo that many pets are quickly euthanized simply because the shelter doesn't have the time or resources to house them.

"Shelters are killing animals that are totally healthy, animals that deserve a second chance of life," she said.

Beyond shelters, social networking has also helped on an individual basis. Controversy erupted after a video of a Slater, Mo., man roughhousing with his nine-week-old puppy went viral, resulting in a Facebook campaign page dedicated to saving the young dog. Hundreds of concerned viewers then called the local police chief's office to voice their alarm, KCTV5 reports

"When I got to view the video, I decided to take the puppy out of the home," Chief Keith Wright told KCTV5.

No charges were filed against the puppy's owner, however the police chief eventually found the puppy a new home with a neighborhood boy.

It's great how plugged in shelters are these days! We've seen proof of this in action. We just ran a contest to find 'America's Favorite Pet Nonprofit' and used social media only to promote it. The nominated participating shelters reached out through their social media networks like Facebook and Twitter and overall garnered more than 1,000 total votes! German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (our winner) in particular has such a great Facebook following and I know that helps them ensure each of their dogs has the best chance to find their forever homes. We were impressed at how well ALL of the shelters participating rallied their family, friends, and fans through social media. It's great that all this new technology can have such a wonderful, obvious positive benefit!

We're also helping to raise money for dogs in Afghanistan and Iraq to get them home with the soldiers that fall in love with them via social media. Things like ChipIns help everyone give a little money when they can to help an animal in need.

Ah, yes. After adopting our second sweet Dane from rescue (the baby in my avatar passed away last August), my husband saw a beautiful fawn boy's picture on the rescue's FB page. Within 2 weeks we had Dane #2, dog #4. No more FB for hubby right now. :)

I told my husband that when the kids are gone, if he's called home before I am, I'll become "the dog lady". :P Seriously, they're awesome. Nothing like a Dane sandwich to warm you on a cold night before hubby gets in bed.

Way to go !!! All my dogs have been rescued, and I've always gotten very special animals...
including the latest canine-daughter, who survived all kinds of crazy stuff after Hurricane Katrina, before coming to me 18 months later.

Hubby's impulse is right-on. I hope your furry-kids bring you both much LOVE :)

Ha! Yes, it's good to see him surpass me with his bleeding heart. I brought home our first 2 rescues 18 years ago when we were first married, and I had a lot of 'splainin' to do. :) All of ours have been rescued, too. They're just the best!

I thought he was nuts bringing in a 4th big dog (our smallest is a lab), but turns out we have plenty of room & they're all great family dogs. I can't take any more right now, though...I have 3 kids to think about too! :D
