Kerry Campbell, 'Botox Mom,' Apologizes, But Is The Entire Thing A Hoax?

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/18/11 03:20 PM ET Updated: 07/18/11 06:12 AM ET

Botox Mom Hoax

"Botox Mom" Kerry Campbell has supposedly apologized for using the substance on her eight-year-old daughter Britney, while some news sources claim that Campbell fabricated the story.

Through a "close relative," Kerry told The Sun (the outlet that broke the original story), "I cannot put into words the remorse I feel. I am going to seek therapy for my obsession with looks so I will no longer push my insecurities about appearance on to her....I honestly felt I was helping her. I regret doing it and remain committed to being a good mother and being reunited with my daughter. I never wanted to harm Britney in any way and I thought I was helping her. What has happened is devastating and I realize now that I was wrong."

Miriam Lacey of BellaSugar cried foul back in March, writing:

First of all, this sensational story is from The Sun, which is unapologetically a tabloid. Then, there's scarce evidence that the little girl and mother exist as they're presented in the story. The pair, who are called Kerry and Britney Campbell in the piece, have almost no online footprint. The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has no record of a Kerry Campbell, and there isn't anyone with a similar name licensed in the San Francisco area. Even a search of Yelp and Facebook didn't turn up anything. And if Britney is competing in Bay Area beauty pageants, she should probably show up somewhere on their websites, but I checked several and found nothing.

An anonymous insider told RadarOnline.com, "It's beginning to look like Kerry's claims about giving her daughter Botox injections looks like a hoax, and that Kerry is making the entire thing up for publicity. Kerry is obsessed with reality television, and wants to become famous. Child Protective Services are conducting an investigation about the Botox claims, and at this point, there is absolutely no evidence that Kerry injected Britney with Botox."

However, the folks at the San Francisco Chronicle (who also couldn't track down the Campbells, like BellaSugar), reported on Monday that San Francisco Human Services Director Trent Rhorer's work is done. Rhorer remarked to the newspaper, "we have completed our investigation, and we are no longer involved in the case."

Truth be told, we wouldn't mind if it were all a hoax. We promise.

What do you think?

Quick Poll

Is "Botox Mom" a hoax?

YES! It's unbelievable and rightfully so.

NO! I still think it's true.

why didn't Huffington Post catch this?
10:09 AM on 05/21/2011
I knew it was not real and I said so when the story first came out. None of it rang true. Why didn't the news channels investigate further before putting this crap on the air?
09:41 PM on 05/20/2011
she doesn't make good choices at all if that's all it took for her to lie to the media about it.
09:11 AM on 05/20/2011
To check if the Mom is really telling the truth. Check on the daughter's face for evidence of botox. If there is, she is obviously lying. If she insisted yet again that her daughter had her botox done with a doctor. Ask for prove of documentation and check with doctor themselves.

Why do people have to lie ? You know if you don't lie then there is nothing to hide and you can be relaxed with the truth behind you. If you lie then you will get caught eventually. I just don't understand why people lied. Maybe I was raised differently then most people as a kid in a strict Catholic household.

Money/fame obsesions abound what the heck do you expect? It was once said that no publicity is bad publicity. Now they are famous maybe their real names or not, they don't care the fame/money machine has now started for them, they are happy about that!

Yeah it's sad to think people are so desperate for attention, kinda reminds me of that one goof ball that had his son fake the weather balloon incident. Media Corps. just gobble these clown up in hopes of making more cash. I feel sorry for anyone that squanders their time watching reality TV.

So this story is a hoax it seems. CPS has not removed the child because there is no case. In my opinion this is not so much the fault of the women in question but the news media, Good Morning America or what ever morning show that tried to pass off this "mother gives birth to a litter of bull dogs" story as news. This is a sad state of affairs when they choose this kind of sensationalism over the many stories that they COULD be presenting.

The powers that be clearly want us paying more attention to these lies than what is important. What is more sad is someone will try to come up with a reason for why we should.

Reality tv has become reality people say oh all pageant moms give their kids redbull because one does it. All pageant moms shave their kids legs or wax their eyebrows because I saw one do it on tv. And now all pageants should be banned because they saw this story on tv. This isn't about pageants. It's about the way the American public pits aside reasoning and fact because of the perfect media storm of reality tv, network news and tabloid exploitation. Kinda explains Trumps presidency run that wasn't at the same time.

That is all the more pathetic to me. The comments about pageant moms could be said about "tiger moms", sports moms and dad, stage parents etc... Not all of them go too far even if some do. You are right, about reality tv though. What is more sad is that people actually BELIEVE that reality tv is real. They have no idea how scripted that is for the sake of entertainment. People are willingly allowing themselves to be manipulated.

So she never injected her child with a deadly toxin. Okay. Then clearly, she is an example of motherhood to all and should be rewarded. (Sarcasm intended.)
02:30 AM on 05/19/2011
If it’s a hoax the worst part is involving a child in the lies and fantasies necessary to support it. Children’s Services does not find this to be a danger to the child? Psychological damage is just as real, and may be worse, then physical abuse. What are the authorities doing to protect this little girl? Nothing!
03:32 AM on 05/19/2011
The child has been removed from the home by Child Protective Services.
04:21 AM on 05/19/2011
Still not totally convinced the child exists. Yes there is a child but we don't know her name or if that is even her mother. I think the source saying was taken away was abc news and the sun which have no credibility left with me. We still haven't seen a friend or a teacher come forward. A this point the child and mom still only exist in the sun and gma... :). I almost want to do an awesome giveaway to anyone who can find out who this woman and child really are. I'll give the winner a bottle of spray tan...

Regardless if it's true or not... its clear that the obsession over beauty padgents are clearly out of control. Parents are doing too much to fix up their kids and make them look like barbie dolls and that people is the true abuse... this botox thing is just the tip of the iceberg.

States should outlaw this practice of abuse... and restrict all beauty contests to girls 16 or older... end this madness now!
01:31 AM on 05/19/2011
How do you know what happens in a pageant? Have you ever been to one? There are several types of pageants, many don't require makeup. The girls who win are not barbie dolls, they are real girls of all shapes and sizes who can get on stage and feel great about themselves. What a child gets out of pageants is like any other children's activity. I've seen abusive behavior from parents at football, gymnastics, dance, musical theater and swimming. Bad parenting is bad parenting. This "botox thing" is not the tip of the iceburg, it's a sign that people will believe anything the media feeds them without doing any research or thinking for themselves.

In the county that I live in we have these pagents .. no make up or fancy dressing .. just natural kids and the money is used for different charities .. there is a right way to do it .
12:34 AM on 05/19/2011
Either way, it is a no win situation for the child. It sounds to me that mom needs help....someone else mentioned Munchausen Syndrome...which part of definition includes undergoing surgical procedures for fixing a disease or injury. The disease may be the mother's issues and what she went through as a child...lack of attention or physical beauty as a child, teasing, bullying, etc. She wants her child to have what she didn't.
12:22 AM on 05/19/2011
Regardless it the mother did or didn't inject botox, she should be prosecuted for either giving the botox or for faking the story and wasting the tax payers money for the costs that Child Protective Services incurred etc. If it was a hoax, the child should get some heavy duty councelling and be made to understand that she has committed a crime.

Why not hold the morning show responsible for bringing us a fake story from a tabloid? The child WAS NOT removed as there is NO such child. I blame the media full stop for the prepetuation of this fraud. They knew full well what they were doing when they did it.

I still cannot, for the life of me, understand why people want to inject one of the most toxic substances on the planet into their faces. This is the same stuff of the swollen cans that our mothers used to warn us to throw out in case we were poisoned to death by it. What great spark decided it would make a wonderful facial rejuvenator? We truly are an insane society.
