Newt Gingrich Glitter Prankster, Nick Espinosa, Eyes 2012: GOP Field Is 'Ripe' For More Stunts

First Posted: 05/18/11 03:31 PM ET Updated: 07/18/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- It hasn't been the best week for presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. But political activist Nick Espinosa, the man behind the prank that will leave Gingrich finding glitter in his hair for days, is having a great time.

"Of all the pranks I've done so far, this has been the most fabulous," he told The Huffington Post. "Getting a Republican candidate for president is a pretty good prank."

On Tuesday, Espinosa dumped colorful glitter on Gingrich and his wife, Callista, during a book-signing event at a downtown Minneapolis hotel. "Feel the rainbow, Newt! Stop the hate! Stop anti-gay politics!" said Espinosa before being escorted out of the room.

Video of the encounter quickly went viral and became another embarrassment for Gingrich, who is trying to convince fellow Republicans that he is a viable, disciplined candidate for the 2012 presidential campaign.

Espinosa told The Huffington Post he decided to approach Gingrich because of his "anti-gay positions." Gingrich was in Minneapolis to speak to the Minnesota Family Council, a group that opposes equality for LGBT individuals.

"Anyone telling people who they can and cannot love is offensive, especially coming from a serial adulterer like Newt," said Espinosa. "I didn't want to stand by while he continued to treat the GLBT community like second-class citizens."

The Gingrich glitter prank wasn't Espinosa's first brush with the national spotlight. In 2009, going by the name "Robert Erickson," he took over the microphone at an anti-immigration rally and launched into a satirical tirade about European immigration.

Last year, Espinosa pranked Minnesota's GOP candidate for governor, Tom Emmer, who had advocated reducing the minimum wage of service workers in his state. At a public event, Espinosa dumped a bag of 2,000 pennies inches from Emmer's face and said, "I have a tip for you too, Emmer!"

Espinosa came up with the idea for his latest prank Tuesday morning, after checking his Twitter feed and seeing an announcement for the Minnesota Family Council event. His little sister accompanied him to the hotel and filmed the encounter.

"I think glitter's a lot of fun," added Espinosa. "I think it definitely makes an impact. The way that his campaign is going on this week, he was in need of a makeover. ... I only used two of the three bags of glitter I bought, so I was thinking that for his next wedding, I could give him the third bag as a wedding gift."

When asked what he's planning for his next prank, Espinosa hinted that he may have plans for 2012, especially with two of his homestate politicians, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), thinking about jumping in the presidential race.

"I will definitely be keeping an eye out for opportunities," said Espinosa. "We'll see what happens. I know there are a few people from Minnesota who are thinking of running for president who have also have really extreme views, whether they're anti-gay, anti-immigrant, anti-union -- across the board. The right wing is getting pretty out there. So I think that they're ripe to have some response from people they're attacking."

This wasn't violent, it wasn't assault, and it wasn't battery (which requires actual touching).

This is at best http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_minimis <-- as in, "The court doesn't bother with such trifles."

There was no intent to harm or cause injury or death, so it doesn't meet the definition of violent, either.

Oh wow, this is great. A lovely prank that makes a statement without being crass. I commend you, good sir!

And good Americans are supposed to think these pranks are examples of how we want our kids to behave relative to other Americans? This guy is a perfect example of the lack of respect that many so-called adults have for each other in this country and why the polarization within the country is at an all-time high. So many well meaning people just do not know how to behave in public. He is lucky that Newt is a gentleman and chose to let it go as an act of a perverted idiot and took no action against him. Someday in the future he may not be so lucky pulling "pranks" like this. What do you think Obama would have done, or one of his security team?

It did give him that sparkle he is missing... That said the last thing need is a leftist James Okeef. Let the republicans have the low ground.

If there is one thing that I think our current President has embodied is his grace and dignity in the face of those who have viciously disagreed and tried to spread malicious lies about him. We are better than this kind of behavior. I wish the guy would have said his view to Gingrich's face and ask that he give him at least the opportunity to be heard. That would have gotten way more attention than this school yard prank.

"That would have gotten way more attention than this school yard prank. "

Actually, no, it wouldn't. Had he merely questioned Gingrich about his anti-gay stance at a book signing, it wouldn't be news.

Thankfully it was only glitter used. Seems people forgot what happened to Mrs.Giffords in January. There has to be better security at those events. If he could bring a box with glitter in it, what's next for the other boo boo out there not wrapped too tight?

Powerful politician telling a huge chunk of the population that they're second-class citizens? Hunky-dory.

Random protester bringing attention to that declaration with a handful of glitter? Too far.

Makes perfect sense.

Nick Espinosa is a failure. I am definitely not a fan of Newt or his policies, and I am ALL for equality in marriage, but free speech doesn't mean the freedom to glitter. Its NOT ok to physically attack candidates on the road just because you disagree with them, whether its with glitter or bullets as in Giffords case.

You're equating glitter with bullets from an assault weapon??????? Newt's flesh is softer than we thought if they pierced his body like the bullets did Gabby's brain.

not equating bullets, but equating the belief that if you disagree with someone you can use ANY object to assault them in public. hands off

Who would have thought a little glitter could cause such an uproar! I've already my views clear in this thread that I don't support what he did but I think if we all took a step backwards and looked at whats being said we'd all have a chuckle at the absurdness of a little glitter ruffling so many feathers.

I wonder who will insult me first now that I've said this...

I can see why people are saying what they are about the 'attack', we can agree to disagree without getting physical about it, having said that.. I strongly disagree with people who throw pies in the faces of others, I've never considered that funny but apparently a lot of people do.

These obnoxious pranks can spiral out of control. The Right can jump right in and start humiliating their opponents as well. This is going to escalate for the worse.

The Right already started in the summer of 2009. in March 2010, one incident of spitting on black Democratic Congressman was caught on film...remember? It was here, on this site. I can't include the link because it's an unwritten rule not to include links by this site.

Or showing up with guns and signs saying "It's time to water the Tree of Liberty?" ;) Yeah, truly absurd that we're going to pretend some glitter is what's going to get the right wing to act more obnoxious than they already do.

Yes, the bouncer's behavior was very much like a child's throwing a tantrum.
