Jilted Chinese Bride Saved From Dramatic Suicide (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/18/11 03:34 PM ET Updated: 07/18/11 06:12 AM ET

The bride might have worn white, but it was anything but a day to envy.

Dressed in her wedding gown, a Chinese college student identified only as Miss Li leaned out from a seventh-story apartment window in China's Jilin province after her fiancé wed another woman, MSNBC is reporting. Miss Li, 22, had threatened to take her life after her boyfriend of four years broke up with her just before the big day, but she was grabbed by waiting rescuers before she could jump from the ledge, which reportedly stands 80 feet above the ground.

Local community officer Guo Zhongfan, who assisted in the rescue, was modest about his efforts. "I did what anyone would have done," he told Reuters. Though she did not sustain any injuries in the incident, Miss Li was taken to a hospital.

Watch video of the daring rescue here:

If she hadn't tried to kill herself (that will show him!), no one other than her circle of friends would have known about her humiliation. She could have moved to another town and blended in with the other billion or so people.

Bride wore white?? I thought Chines custom made white symbolical of mourning and death. Anyway, it was not her dishonor, but that of the failed groom. Maybe that's more of a Japanese thing, but it's true. You owe it to your family to live.,

Quixoto is absolutely correct. Trying hanging out in Waikiki and watch the Japanese brides from Japan decked out in their couture WHITE bridal gowns and typical photo Amercan/Western typical photo shoots. Don't under rate the influence of the West on many/most societies.

Curious that either cultural interpretation of the color's meaning would be appropriate in this case.

She wanted ti die now rather than die a slow death by being married.

This is how not to treat a chinese woman. her marriage was the most important event of her life and her jerk fiance did nothing but lie to her. she has no face especially to her family and friends. people in china probably want to throw the fiance out the very same window. such a beautiful woman with a broken heart.

I'm sorry - but boo hoo. Because Chinese culture has made this the end all and be all? Because the guy chose not to marry her? When she decides he's not worth ending her life over, she'll get over her "broken heart" and life goes on.

It WAS her wedding day and you are supposed to where your dress on your big day.. at least normal people do. That is not melodramatic.

I f I could tell this young lady anything it would be this.... The pain will go away some day! I know you do not think so, just think how much luckier you are now. If he asked you to marry him and then waiting until after you bought your dress, most likely had all your plans completed, and then married someone else then he was already cheating on you!
There is not a man alive worth killing yourself over...(nor woman for that matter)! It doesn't seem like that now. You need time to grieve for what might have been you happy life together! Allow yourself that much, then go out and help others who have been through that to heal, also. May you prosper in you new life!

i love the internet it's bringing the world together, who 30 years ago would ever off come across a story like this? We can now all communicate with each other more and more people of all nations, religions and races. One thing we should all notice is tha despite the differences in our culture, races, class we all are human. like maya angelou says

"The honorary duty of a human being is to love, I am human, and nothing human can be alien to me."

If she acts this irrational before the wedding, just imagine how difficult it would have been to tell her after the marriage.
Sorry she acted so emotionally, but i think the fiance got out just in time...

They dated for four years and suddenly he breaks up with her and marries somebody else. She will soon figure out that she dodged two bullets on this day--didn't marry a jerk and lived to find someone whlch, which should not be too hard in China since they kill baby girls.

One has to keep in mind that in this culture ruled by misogynist thought, this wretched soul has been taught that it was her fault that he ran off with someone else. The pressure is unfathomable to be the dutiful wife. We in the West have a tendency to compare ourselves to societies that we have little in common with and be judgmental. Compassion being the exception I hope. This is a society that just over 100 years ago threw new born girls in the fields for fertilizer while lamenting the fact that it should have been a baby boy.

Just pause for a minute and consider the suffering she was going through when she decided she wanted to end it all. Just put yourself in her shoes for a minute. Maybe you have never been in love. Maybe you have never felt heartbreaking disappointment. Maybe that's why some of you have posted such callous comments. If you don't even try to understand, you will be less prepared for when something devastating (it's a matter of when, not if, because when you're old, you're going to lose people you love) happens in your life. Perhaps then, after being so heartless, you will experience a tragic irony in that you will be as overwhelmed by pain as what she was experiencing in this moment. I don't wish that upon anyone. But anybody at some point in their lives can feel hopeless and overwhelmed by depression. Do not dismiss this as an anomaly or just one person who had character flaws. Do not mock people for their pain and suffering. Everybody who has made a joke out of this is cruel. I feel for her as a human being with a pulse.

I suggest she sue the guy for all the expenses she and her family paid for the wedding. The groom needs to be responsible for his actions. He should also be on the hook for causing emotional injury to the bride and her family.
