Not even the Secret Service is immune to Twitter overshares.

The Secret Service Twitter account, which launched May 9, posted a tweet, since deleted, blasting Fox News.

According to retweets by other users and screenshots of the tweet posted to Twitter, the Secret Service tweeted on Wednesday afternoon, "Had to monitor Fox for a story. Can't. Deal. With. The. Blathering." (See screenshot below)

The rogue tweet disappeared almost immediately--and suggests that the Secret Service has at least one iPad on hand.

Was the Secret Service's account hacked? Or did someone post to the wrong account? And does this land the Secret Service a spot on the list of worst Twitter PR fails?

Check out our post on tweets that got people fired, and tweets that got people arrested.

UPDATE: The Secret Service has apologized for its tweet. According to CNN, the agency said in a statement, "An employee with access to the Secret Service's Twitter account, who mistakenly believed they were on their personal account, posted an unapproved and inappropriate tweet...aWe apologize for this mistake, and the user no longer has access to our official account. Policies and practices which would have prevented this were not followed and will be reinforced for all account users."

An honest Tweet. I feel sorry for the poor guy having to watch the blather.

Not the first time lately we've had an apology issued for having someone tell the truth openly. Apparently the only thing the truth sets free these days are apologies.

That's it? I sure hope they weren't too hard on him. Or maybe off-the-record, they all had a good chuckle.

Free Speech doesn't apply to the Secret Service, personal account or not?
08:38 AM on 05/19/2011
Wow, so the secret service monitors FOX, probably b/c they know that Fox rhetoric incites radicals against the President.

How freaking unPatriotic is that?? If the shoe were on the other foot (say, SS monitoring NBC), Fox would have a field day. FIELD DAY. 24/7 coverage about how the mainstream media is endangering the President.....

Confirmation that actual intelligence exists in the SS. Good news for the nation.

I totally understand how somebody with even a small amount of intelligence beyond that of a flea would diss Fox News for their incessantly untrue "blathering".

Yeah, sure, a likely story. They knew which account they were on. They knew.

Good god can we please stop rushing to apologize every time someone remotely offends Fox News?

They are a selective outrage machine dedicated to pushing a predefined narrative not a journalistic orginization. Keep them out of all White House events and make fun of them at will.

I imagine that the Secret Service would really, really despise unintelligent people...so this slip is not at all surprising...

...but it sure is HILARIOUS.
11:11 PM on 05/18/2011
That's hilarious. I monitored FOX for 5 years and had to quit because I was getting hives every time I turned it on. It's not for the weak, just the dumb.
