10 Fastest Growing U.S. Industries: IBISWorld

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 05/18/11 12:55 PM ET   Updated: 07/18/11 06:12 AM ET

Over the course of the recession, major companies have failed, entire industries have withered. But at least a few have not only survived, but grown.

IBISWorld's recently released report, "Top 10 Fastest Growing Industries," delves deeper into the trends discussed in last month's report on dying industries. Except this time, their focusing on the good instead of the bad.

Dying telecommunications and newspaper industries have made way for other companies based around internet and technology. No one's revenue growth comes even close to that of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) providers, like Skype, as the entire industry's revenue grew by 194 percent in the las tyear. That could help explain Microsoft's surprising decision to purchase the company for $8.5 billion earlier this month.

Growing environmental concerns have helped companies focusing on alternative energy, specifically wind power, which has grown 16.9 percent over the last decade. And if there's any industry that's benefited from the collective tightening of corporations, it's third-party administrators and insurance claims adjusters, both of which help clients increase efficiency and cut costs.

Below are the the top ten fastest growing industries in the U.S. based on percentage increase in revenue:

10. Solar Power
1 of 11
Revenue Growth 2000 - 2011: 2.7 percent
Revenue in 2010 in millions: $69
Forecast Revenue Growth 2011 - 2016: 7.9 percent

11:21 PM on 05/19/2011
Death panels that is so funny. ROFL. Grow up and realize the only death panels were the private insurance companies who refused treatment for prexisting conditions and the hospitals which said - "No insurance, no treatment."

The American government is extremely adept at using language that appears to support American Exceptionalism as put forth in the Constitution of The United States. It is however a rouse perpetrated by the republicans and democrats to invoke a cloud of nostalgia about the government itself. Politics of Race, Class Warfare, Military Action Distraction, Demonizing Producers of Wealth and Jobs are all a form of control, modern day socio-economic slavery.

There are some really way off projections there, as it apparently does not include any 2011 data.

So far in 2011, the global solar market has dropped 24%, the global wind market has dropped 37%, and online retailing has grown 12.2%.

Also seperating telecommunications ignores the fact that telecom also includes all of the high speed data paths, such as fiber optics, WiFi, etc.

Oil companies and health insurance companies just posted the largest profits in history. The MIC isn't doing too bad either, thanks to the perennial BS wars. The 1% elite are very happy, and that's what counts in Congress. Us riff-raff simply don't matter.

Time for revolution part deux.

We spend a paltry $69 million for solar power, and spend hundreds of billions making the middle east safe for Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, and BP.

The world is a crazy place.
07:30 PM on 05/18/2011
There is nothing stopping you from going out and buying solar panels.
04:14 AM on 05/19/2011
Hey Bogey Man:

You think my 18 wheeler, pulling 40,000 lbs. of fantastic colorado beef at 70 MPH up to Seattle is going to run on Solar Power?
11:27 PM on 05/19/2011
Harold; if the money spent on highways were spent on railways and new tracks then the cost of hauling all that beef would be way lower and the environment would suffer a lot less.

Semis are the least efficient way of hauling beef. Buy locally and you wont have to drive the meat 1600 miles in vacuum packed boxes frozen solid to eat a good steak.
You can, by the way move live cattle a long ways on trains if you need it on the hoof.
17 million tractor trailers on the road are why we consume so much diesel everyday. Convert that sh** over to Natty Gas and drop emissions by 80%, AND prolong the life of the engines by 60%. But hey Harold, we need guys like you for country songs about the past. Cowboys are still cool, just burning fuel CAUS' its fun isnt.

Telling stories about American products and where to get them, just 1-5% of Us buying American made goods would restore unemployment to about 3 to 4%.

Now CNN, that is what is needed.

ABC is currently on it's Made In America, 3 installment.

It is about darn time.

Then if the rest of the media would follow and report the rest of the news truthfully, accurately and factually, the public would be better of for it.

You would prefer, No Goods to be manufactured in America?

You do know, that after a while, without manufacturing goods here in USA, our standard of living goes down?

Societies without a functioning Middle class, terminates from within.

Solar and Wind energy growth ought to be exponential. Not single
digit right now. Wave and water flow turbine mills ought to be larger
growth than them. Doubling and tripling.
When are they going to get serious.

Who is "they"?

If you are such a supporter of solar, why not buy solar panels for your house?

Perhaps "they" is "you"

What with? I am on a fixed income and held back by the very elements
that are fighting against clean energy. I am doing all I can to survive
and trying to figure ways to get around this mess with few assets to do so.
