DREAM Act Supporters Tell Obama To Quit Campaigning On DREAM Act

Dream Act

First Posted: 05/19/11 06:49 PM ET Updated: 07/19/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Immigration advocacy groups have a message for President Barack Obama: Stop using the DREAM Act to ask for campaign money unless you can deliver relief from deportation for undocumented youth.

United We DREAM, a group of young people pushing for the bill, started a petition last week asking the president to remove discussions of the bill in campaign literature and fundraising emails unless he is willing to use his executive power to block deportations for DREAM Act-eligible students.

The DREAM Act would grant legal status to some undocumented young people who came to the U.S. as children and are now looking to attend college or join the military.

Although Obama has said repeatedly that he supports the DREAM Act and that undocumented students are not the focus of his immigration enforcement plans, some are nonetheless caught up in a deportation system that removed more than 390,000 people from the country last year.

On Wednesday, a group of DREAM Act supporters gathered outside an Obama fundraiser in Boston to protest against the president's deportation policies.

Vinicius Quirino, 25, a student who is in removal proceedings after overstaying a tourist visa, chanted, "Pass the DREAM Act now!" as attendees filtered into the fundraiser. Although Quirino would not be eligible for the DREAM Act as it is currently written -- he entered the United States from Brazil when he was 17, two years beyond the max entrance age under the bill -- he said he wants to make sure Obama supporters know the president has not delivered on his DREAM Act promises.

"We're just showing to people who were supporting him that he makes promises and he doesn't accomplish anything," he said. "So why are you supporting him? The students are still in the shit."

Quirino has a clean criminal record, he said, and is attending college. He pays international student tuition (at a higher rate than American students) and has a tax ID so he can file taxes to the government. He once tried to join the Air Force, visiting a recruiting center and passing preliminary tests, before he was told his immigration status disqualified him.

As students like Quirino face deportation, some in the immigrant rights activists say Obama is using the DREAM Act as more of a campaign stunt than an actual legislative push.

"We needed this kind of leadership last year," said Carlos Saavedra, a national coordinator for United We DREAM. "Now we have very small chances in Congress, but he still has an ability to secure the lives of DREAM Act youth."

The group's petition, which has more than 1170 signatures, is part of a broader effort in the immigration advocacy community to lobby for executive action for DREAM Act-eligible young people.

The bill was reintroduced in the Senate earlier this month after failing there during last year’s lame-duck session. Senate Democrats have said they will hold a vote on the bill -- possibly paired with immigration enforcement measures to win GOP votes -- but there is little hope that the DREAM Act will become law within the next two years.

Some Democrats have said Obama should offer relief in the meantime in the form of executive action that would block deportation of men and women under the age of 35 who entered the United States as children, have clean criminal records and plan to attend college.

The Obama administration has denied that it could use its discretion to stop the deportation of DREAM Act-eligible students.

"I am not going to stand here and say that there are whole categories that we will, by executive fiat, exempt from the current immigration system, as sympathetic as we feel towards them," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in April. "But I will say that group ... are not the priority [for deportation]."

Obama made a similar statement at a March 28 town hall hosted by Spanish-language network Univision.

"With respect to the notion that I can just suspend deportations through executive order, that's just not the case," he said.

In March, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), a vocal supporter of immigration reform, joined with the Fair Immigration Reform Movement and other Democrats in Congress to call for executive action on immigration. The Latino congressman, along with a coalition of immigration groups, is holding events around the country to pressure Obama to keep his 2008 campaign promises, including the ending of deportation of undocumented students with clean criminal records.

“This is not amnesty,” Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) said at a March event for the campaign. “It is simply the right thing to do, and we must do it now.”

Senate Democrats have also called for Obama to block some deportations. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and 21 other Democrats sent a letter to the White House in April asking the president to block deportations for those who would qualify for the DREAM Act.

As the deportations continue, DREAM Act supporters say it is disingenuous for Obama to use his support for the bill to drum up support for his reelection.

"Every time I talk to folks, people are really angry about it," Saavedra said. "Knowing he can do something about it is frustrating people the most."

Tie repeal of Affirmative Action to passage of the DREAM ACT!

The DREAM Act will create countless individuals immediately afforded advantages in the workplace under affirmative action. Not fair to those here legally and unprotected by affirmative action. The Dream Act leapfrogs currently illegal individuals over this population. Oppose the Dream Act on this principle alone.

Why are we the only country that is described as 'rac1st' for wanting to treat our borders like actual borders?

Mexico has more stringent immigration requirements than we do.

I know...I know....it's all the 'corporations' and the 'GOPs' fault.

Im so sick of hearing :We are all Gods people", "We are all in Gods image". Yes we are. However God said "OBEY THE LAWS OF THE LAND". When you crossed that border illegaly, YOU broke the laws of the land and what God said. So why dont all you illegals stop trying to use the Bible and take it out of context to suit your needs. LAWS ARE LAWS. I cant stand people who use God to try and away with illegal stuff. Racism...another word used when someone cant have thier way. Its honstly really sad. IF YOU HAD DONE THINGS THE RIGHT WAY, YOU WOULDNT BE WORRIED ABOUT BE DEPORTED. SO ITS NO ONES FAULT BUT YOUR OWN, AND YOUR PARENTS. BUT STOP BLAMING THE UNITED STATES FOR DOING THINGS THE RIGHT, WHEN YOUR COUNTRY IS DOING THE SAME TO OTHERS!!!!!

"STOP BLAMING THE UNITED STATES FOR DOING THINGS THE (sic) RIGHT"

how exactly is the United States doing things right when american businesses have been hiring illegal immigrants for years without repercussions? People come here for the jobs, jobs that were provided to them by American citizens.

And people here without legal status did not all cross the border. Nearly half of the illegal immigrant population came here through legal means and overstayed their visa.

Let's not pretend we are victims and the "Law is the Law" or whatever. If the government truly wanted to reduce illegal immigration it would have done so a long time ago. It would have secured the border ages ago and would have implemented a system to prevent people from staying here long after their visas expired. Now there's millions of people here illegaly, and like it or not, they are here to stay.

Immigration reform, including a path to legalization, is imminent. It is just a matter of time.

'They' are only "here to stay" for as long as we allow that to be the case, as your own post admits. We need not allow that to be the case, and we should not - for their sake as well as the good of our nation.

Of course they all crossed the border! Do you think that they teleported into the US?

Things that have been LEGAL in history: slavery, segregation, genocide based on ethnicity or religion or both, fascism, communism, concentration camps, property expropriations.

Things that have been ILLEGAL in history: following Christ, being of the "wrong" ethnic background, resisting evil regimes, private property, the freedom of speech.

Jesus Christ Himself broke a few "laws of the land". Remember His overturning the tables of the money changers, preaching the Kingdom of Heaven when forbidden by the local authorities, etc. However, He never broke God's law.

That which is evil is not a law.

Indeed passing evil laws has been done to death, both literally and figuratively.

Christians are not obligated to observe evil laws. That is how Christians transform the world for the better.

So, the people crossing the boarder without permission are defying an unjust law.

Sorry, not buying it.

Civilized behavior includes asking permission to enter another persons property. The fact that they cross the boarder illegally indicates they've no respect for the act of asking permission. Its not that they're not wanted here, hell I don't care where my neighbor comes from or what color his skin is. But I would like to know that they at least respect the law. We already have enough people who don't.

Asking permission by entering legally would do a lot to ease my apprehension.

"Hatred" is not a part of this issue except in the fevered minds of emo-hysterical shriekers seeking a fallacious appeal to emotion rather than logic and reason.

"render unto GOD that which is GODs, and unto Cesar that which is Cesar's."
Keep trying, eventually your going to answer for every manipulative attempt to put Jesus in this issue.

Unless God has a big head, 3-4ft tall, bluish grey in colour, large bug-like black eyes, slit for a mouth, small nose. 3 fingers and a thumb, long spindly arms and legs (or something like that if you believe in that kind of thing) then I would agree with you.

They are if they are a foreign-born resident who has not been naturalized and who owes allegiance to another country.

Immigrants, irrespective of their legal status, pay taxes that pay salaries of the hate-mongering politicians.

Race is the real issue the "conservatives" care about. All else is smoke screen. They will throw the well-being of our country under the wheels of their racial agenda anytime, and have done so often in the past.

Until you understand what motivates them, you cannot make any sense of their circular logic when talking with them about economics or legality.

We don't need a backdoor anything.

We need a front door path for legalization that the majority of the Americans want to see.

The "conservative" haters thwart the will of the American people.

I'm not a Conservative, and I know plenty of Liberal's, Moderates, and Independents who disagree with you. I know you have some polls that say differently, but the reality is that most people are not in favor of granting them citizenship without them going home first and applying there.

We already had an amnesty in the 80's with the condition that enforcement would come after legalization. After seeing how that worked out, most people want enforcement first and then legalization.

Repetition is an aid to your memory

Here's the link to your front-door legalization

1.1 million immigrants use it each & every year to gain legal entry into the USA with authorization of the U.S. Gov't

Why not the 11.2 million "free loader" illegal immigrants ~ use it ?

No excuse, nor justification for foreign nationals to cross the U.S. border w/o authorization of the U.S. Gov't

Obama should stop speaking about the Dream Act since it's clear he never intended passing anything remotely close to this back door amnesty, nor should he. If no new immigration laws are going to be passed, he should start enforcing the existing laws which are NOT broken, only unenforced.

I hope that he keeps on talking about it every day until election day next year.
Then voters will have a clear view of his amnesty agenda for a second term and make sure that he doesn't get a second term to implement it.

These undocumented individuals were brought here illegally by their parents. Why are they not responsible for their plight of their children instead of the American Government and legal US Citizens? We didn't bring them here. What about our own children? Those in the country illegally should not be here. And American's are being forced, against their will, to just roll over and take it. It's not right. Who is in charge around here?
