Planking Craze Hits Australia: At Least One Dead (VIDEO)

'Planking' Remains Popular, Despite Death

In the history of odd games, this may be the weirdest yet.

Planking has apparently taken Australia by storm, driving people to lay stiff all across the nation. The craze, which simply involves laying down flat and completely stiff in public places and photographing it, isn't inherently dangerous.

However, planking claimed its first victim Sunday, after a 20-year-old man fell seven stories to his death after attempting to plank on a railing. You can see the report below, from Ten News.

While the true origins of this bizzare craze are really unknown, the Planking Wikipedia entry traces it back to the Lying Down Game, which seems to have been started around 1997. It's believed that it started in Europe or Japan (but honestly it could have been anywhere).

As ridiculous as the craze sounds, the recent death even drew the attention of Australia's Prime Minister, who warned plankers to put safety first, according to the Australian. “There's a difference between a harmless bit of fun done somewhere that's really safe and taking a risk with your life,'' Gillard apparently told reporters in Sydney.
