Jon Huntsman Criticizes Heavy U.S. Presence In Afghanistan: It's Not 'How We Ought To Be Responding'

First Posted: 05/20/11 12:28 PM ET Updated: 07/20/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Jon Huntsman may be stepping into the shoes of Haley Barbour and Mike Huckabee, becoming a top-tier candidate skeptical of current U.S. foreign policy and calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

"In terms of foreign policy, we have a generational opportunity, George, to reset our position in the world," Huntsman said in an interview with George Stephanopoulos that aired Friday on "Good Morning America." "And it must be done based upon our deployments in all corners of the world, wherever we find ourselves, how affordable those deployments are, whether it's a good use of our young men and women. Whether it's in our core national security and interest. We're fighting an enemy that is far different than any we have got before. It's a nontraditional kind of war, and I think we need to step back, recalibrate how we go about protecting our borders and protecting our people, and resetting our position in the world."

On Afghanistan, Huntsman did not specify an exact withdrawal date, although he expressed skepticism that having 100,000 U.S. troops on the ground there was the best decision.

"I would tell you that we have to evaluate very carefully our presence in Afghanistan," he said. "And my inclination would be to say that it is a heavy and very expensive presence we have on the ground. That at a point in time where we need to be looking at our asymmetrical threats, what we have in Afghanistan today is not consistent with how we ought to be responding."

The comments are similar to ones the former Utah governor made in New Hampshire on Thursday, when he called a drawdown of U.S. troops "inevitable."

"The deployments are mighty expensive," he said. 'We've got to ensure that going forward into our new world that we have a foreign policy that is an extension of our core national interests. And does that mean that we're going to have to look at the map at some point and reset our level of engagement and our deployments in some corners of the world. Absolutely it does."

He added that there would likely be a civil war in Afghanistan when the U.S. pulls out, but said that there's not "a whole lot we can do about that."

Barbour and Huckabee have taken themselves out of the running for 2012. But two other GOP presidential contenders have also called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, although they are considered long shots to win the nomination. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) is one of Congress' most forceful voices advocating an end to the war, and former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson has made clear that he believes the country should draw down immediately.

Other candidates have been more tentative. Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty (R) recently said he believes U.S. troops could be withdrawn from Afghanistan over the next two years if conditions are right, although he defers to the military for specific recommendations. Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. in April, former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) criticized Obama for laying out a withdrawal plan that was more rapid than what some in the military were advocating.

There is no good way to deal with a country as corrupt and unstable as Afghanistan. Send in missles from afar, bring our troops home and let them live as they have for hundreds of years, like most in the middle east, Animals.

Wendy, it's not a left or a right issue, it's about American lives lost for a lost cause. Liberals generally cannot engage in conversations with real solutions, only toss out rude or cutesy remarks, as most liberals are ill equipped to generate meaningful solutions. Case in point the current occupant in the White House.

If there is any redeeming feature about our war in Afghanistan, it has to be a military one and it comes at a heavy cost. The training, experience and readiness of our forces are certainly sharpened, and when needed, they are always there for us. Just wish I could convince myself that all goes reasonably well for the future in that god-forsaken place.

NO NATION BUILDING. I dont care if they have electricity or Democracy. Our military should grind out any trace of civilization and then leave. Let them rebuild.

Here is how we settle this, gather up the 26 million illegals in America, put them in a Uniform, bring our Soldiers home, drop the illegals off in Afganastan, let the loud mouth know it all liberals led them, if they successfully win the war consider giving them citizenship under probationary conditions, let them earn their food stamps, free housing, and free medical. Station our troops along the borders to stop further illegals from crossing over, Problem Solved.

Huntsman is right. We need to get out of Afghanistan--NOW!! Don't politicians and governments ever learn from history? The Brits failed in Afghanistan in the 19th century and the Russkies got embarrased and their lunch handed to them in the 1980s. Yet, just like in Viet Nam, the U.S. is over there stumbling around, expending American lives and money. The McCains and Clintons need to shut up and go away.

i was in pakistan in 2001 and a local pakistani said to me that the afghanis are the worst enemies.
he said so many armies have gone in to try and manage them only to be repelled
he cited a case of the british sending in 10,000 troops. the afghanis killed all but one so that one could return to headquarters and report what had happened.

Afghanistan is not winnable. The British and Russians found out the hard way. Also the Karzai govt is corrupt. His relatives and cronies have cleaned out the major bank in Kabul. Provide equipment and training to their army and let them fight. Time to pull out

Yeah, and that was about the dumbest thing Americans have done since Bush was selected by a Conservative Stacked Supreme Court. Stupid beyond all measures. Americans are waking up Mrs.Haggard. They still believe in Public Education, Social Security and Medicare...roads, dams, clean water, public libraries and etc and so on. They don't want what the RWNJ's stand for. Which is a Third World Country. Republican dream come true.

I think of the wars that have been fought alledgedly for Freedom. More often the blood and sufferring and death were so that massively powered moneyed interests might be free to us us up in our harnesses.I think of the endless lists of the dead who said to have given thier lives so that we might be free. But after the wars nothing much changed. As usual we arose every morning slipped into our harnesses, plodded to our work, and believed we were free. Then we died. Gerry Spence

Thought provoking..I served my country for 22 yrs..when the first Iraq war started my husband and I were stationed in Germany but he was TDY to a school in Tx..he was immediately brought back and his unit deployed..they ended up under the burning oil wells and came home with brain tumors and skin peeling off like he was a banana..he was never the same and we divorced. I knew so many lives ruined over that war. When President Clinton ramped up for the troops to go into Bosnia we worked 24/7 only home for a few hours sleep and back to work to make sure they were provided everything needed in support of the mission. I doubt anything other than Bosnia was for money...the oil..etc. It's disgusting how many men and women have been sacrificed for oil..and yet they roll out the same ole chants about freedoms etc..all lies..so my point was I do understand what you're saying..and I agree.

Actually If you noticed that was not my thought but one I read and agree with. I was quoting the most sharpwitted trial lawyer of all time. His name is Gerry Spence, I've been reading one of his books. He has a website with lots of provoking thoughts all you have to do is google his name. I never much liked lawyers but this guy explains why it is that people dont like lawyers and that the perception is often wrong. The Book is titled From Freedom to Slavery and really gives you a new understanding and ideas to at least think about. From my perspective its a must read that should be required in high school. I'm only half way through or so but Its such profound reading I can't give it Justice. You can expect to hear more Gerry quotes from me in the future.

Perhaps Mr. Huntsman is not aware that the United States is in a continual evaluation and re-evaluation of our presence in Afghanistan just as we are in our continued involvement in everything else in the world. Or perhaps he is aware and wants to get his political face in the picture.

I wonder if Huntsman thought this up all by himself, or if has "People" to help him with really new ideas like this.....I' ll bet He has People.
11:17 AM on 05/21/2011
Up until this article I had never heard of Huntsman. I think now that we got Bin Laden we should get out of Afghanistan and since their leaders are criticizing us for what we did we should stop all aid to them. I believe the Afghan government knew Bin laden was there and harbored a terrorist.

The only problem with that is the nuclear capabilities they have. If we could just get a few countries like Russia and India who both have nuclear capabilities to take a stand and tell Afghanistan that they need to step off the rhetoric and stop embracing the terrorist or there will be consequences. That will likley not happen but it would be nice to hear them do that.

Other major countries need to be more involved in the fight against the taliban and other terrorist factions.

Nato needs to get more involved, like they did in Libya, in the other areas like Syria where there have been major human rights abuses. Nato needs to just get it over with and go in a remove Ghadafi. He was behind the bombing of the PanAm flight over Scottland and he needs to be brought to trial and hung just like Saddam was to set an example .

These Republicans and tea partiers have gone a little wacko and are doing themselves in. 2012 will be the year of backlash against them for what they have tried to push through and have pushed through in some states.

1. america is at war in afghanistan
2. osama bin laden was found in pakistan
3. the "aid" that is so often discussed as being withdrawn is actually a toll for using pakistani roads and airspace to funnel troops, water, food, munitions and gas (aid to troops) to afghanistan which is a landlocked country. more worrying for me is the troops who could be stranded without aid since so many congressmen and women do not understand that it is a toll and not aid but continue to argue about the aid as though usa was helping pakistan because they like the country and the people who run it.
4. india and pakistan both have nukes as a deterent to each other, much like usa and ussr
5. there are already nato and other nationality troops in afghanistan
6. pakistan has helped catch more terrorists in their own country after they fled across the border from afghanistan.
