Google has selected Monte Verde Elementary School student Matteo Lopez, 7, as the U.S. winner of this year's Doodle 4 Google contest.

Lopez, a South San Francisco resident, created a whimsical logo he calls "Space Life." The marker and colored pencil drawing depicts an imaginative trip to the moon, complete with an alien encounter.

The picture beat out more than 107,000 submissions and topped the list of over 5 million votes. Google also awarded Lopez a netbook computer, a $15,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for his school.

The artist's dream, according to Google, is to "... become an astronaut and explore space life."
