Mitch Daniels' Decision Not To Run For President Leaves GOP Floundering

First Posted: 05/22/11 12:22 PM ET Updated: 07/22/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Back to square one.

The Republican Party is once again in search of a candidate to unite it after Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels dashed the hopes of many in the party by deciding not to run for president.

The fallout is two-fold: It will renew pressure on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to consider a run and could potentially lure others who were waiting on Daniels' decision into the race .

Second, it initiates a shift of GOP money and operatives toward either Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty or former Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, the current front-running alternatives to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Pawlenty advisers said they anticipated recruiting big money funders who might otherwise have supported Daniels.

But Daniels' withdrawal may help Romney more than anyone.

"It's important," one senior Romney adviser told The Huffington Post. "Obviously, we don't know if [Daniels] would have caught fire, but he certainly had the buzz going to make a big splash."

Another veteran GOP political operative, who is not affiliated with any candidate, said, "The nomination is now Romney's to lose."

But many in the GOP will not be satisfied with Romney as the de facto candidate, nor with Pawlenty or Huntsman as a second choice. So a renewed push for Christie or Ryan can be expected.

Yet both Christie and Ryan said they remained resolute Sunday that they have absolutely no intention of running.

"I assume the pressure will increase but the answer will not change," Bill Palatucci, a Republican National Committee member from New Jersey who is close to Christie, said in an e-mail.

Ryan appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday morning and once again said flat out that he will not run.

"I'm not running for president. I’m not planning on running for president. If you’re running for president, you’ve gotta do a lot of things to line up a candidacy. I have not done any of those things," he said.

"You never know what opportunities present themselves way down the road. I’m not talking about right now," he added.

But Bill Kristol, the conservative columnist and founder of the Weekly Standard magazine, told HuffPost that the campaign to draft Ryan into running is still "very much alive."

Kristol also floated the names of Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's name will also be discussed, but the younger brother of former President George W. Bush appears even more determined than Christie or Ryan to avoid a run.

Daniels' decision to forgo the race -- as well as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's withdrawal from consideration -- also opens the door further for Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Huckabee's decision freed up many conservative evangelical voters who could now consider voting for Bachmann, and Daniels' decision means the race is more wide open than ever.

With Daniels out of the race, the GOP is back in familiar territory, looking for a candidate who can lead the charge against President Obama, but increasingly despondent that such a candidate will ever materialize.

A House GOP leadership aide tried to put on a brave face.

"Governor Daniels has the sort of record Republicans are looking for: an effective, popular conservative reformer. So it's disappointing," the aide said of Daniels' decision. "But given the Obama Administration's anemic record on jobs, gas prices, and taxes, there's no doubt that one of the remaining serious GOP contenders will give the President a serious challenge."

What I find absolutely jaw-breakingly hilarious is that both Mike Huckable, and Mitch Daniels say that could have bested Obama, come 2012.

Funny, because, were that true, why are neither running for President, next year? I'd like an answer to that question, Mike n' Mitch.

To the Obama haters, go back to the faux news site. We don't need your hateful stupidity on this site. Ringling Brothers wants you back. Run along now ....

Too bad. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he signed the PP legislation to bolster his conservation cred for a Presidential run. Now I have to assume that he's just another far right @ss. Good riddance.

He was never going to win. Too short and dull. Plus he has those Bush years to explain.

The real reason he didn't run: His wife and kids said "No way do we want another Republican president! The last one was an utter disaster!!!"

One would think that if Obama's record is so bad they would be chomping at the bit to run against him, but alas they are running away like scarred kids.

Obama, "bad record" according to who (haters). If you call 14 months of jobs growth, healthcare, and getting Osama bin Laden a bad record-you must believe Bush record was piss~poor:)

So this is the left's strategy this time around? Keep repeating the lie that the GOP has a weak field enough times in the hope that it becomes some infallible truth? Kind of like when they say Sarah Palin is stupid or the tea party is racist all day long in the hopes that such absurd nonsense becomes reality? The GOP has a fine field this time around. Democrats ought to be looking at their field (Obama) if they want to see an example of a pathetic lineup.

Of course you think that. But we have several great candidates. Herman Cain and Tim Pawlenty are great. Who do you guys have? Only Obama? Well, technically Obama is a great candidate since all it takes for liberals to rally around him is some empty promises and catchy slogans. But he is a terrible president. Herman Cain is my choice and I fail to see how he could not be a better president than the one we have now. He seems to be one of the few who is willing to take Obama on. We need a person who can articulate why Obama must go to the American voters. Cain is that person.

Paul Ryan would be a horrid national candidate, the right wing thinks he is this brilliant idelogue, in reality he is just someone that read Ayn Rand in high school and has been propagating that fiction every since.

It shows the utter nihilism and self focus of the right to think that the vast majority of the populace, at this junction, would listen to Ryans world view, the Libertarian world view, and vote out Barack Obama.

I have heard the flakey right state, unequivically, that Ryan would "destroy" Obama in a debate?

Did these people watch the video tapes of Ryan's town halls after they voted on his electoral suicide note for the Republicans 2012. Ordinary citizens, older folks had him gibbering and stammering.

Obama would tear him to shreds, and not even look like he was doing it.

Besides, why take a fake liberatarian, at least give us Ron Paul? He's crazy, but at least is more consistant as a libetarian that Ryan.

Many people these days have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. however; they do not have a J.O.B. The T-bagr-repubs' answer to them is slash more jobs.

Indiana repubs are a different breed. I've got an inlaw who's active in the Cass county GOP and I've hung out with him and his friends and I have to say I've never met a more racist group of people in my life. I literally felt sick to my stomach after listening to five minutes of their conversation. .

It's funny, when someone thinks you're a republican, and you 'go along' and start to hear the initial banter.. It's racist in less then 5 minutes... I've yet to 'hear' a republican voters standpoint that didn't involve racism, actually, and I've been partial to quite a number of such 'conversations' working in a predominantly 'republican' driven business/market.. I'm quite appealing to republicans being a tall white male in my 30's, and I get to hear alot of 'inside chats' if I can hold my stomach together long enough.

Republicans... Fear in one hand.. Whip in the other..

The new Republican mantra as spoken by the departure of Gov. Daniels from the 2012 Presidential race is “I love my country; I love my family more”.

This is eerily similar to the corporate mantra of “I love my country; I love my corporation more” already in place by GE and Bank of America mantra, along with most of the large multi-nationals corporations.

One can only hope that in times of peril that Indiana's police and fire personnel, and those serving in the Indiana National Guard do not have the same dedication to their jobs in protecting lives and Liberty.

Wait, Wait, Rep Rob Howell just said 'Screw Granny put her to the curb' in his speech about how medicare should be removed.

How can 'Put Granny to the Curb' and 'I love my family' go together?

Oh wait, they don't.
