Kobo Introduces New eReader Touch Edition (PHOTOS)

New Touchscreen eReader Unveiled

Kobo is rolling out a new touchscreen ereader.

The Kobo eReader Touch Edition will sell for $129.99, starting in early June. Like other reading-dedicated devices, the Kobo ereader uses Pearl E Ink, so that the device can be read in direct sunlight. The introduction of the touchscreen lets readers highlight phrases, look up words, zoom into images, change font size, or flip through the book by tapping or swiping. Instead of a keyboard, there is a "virtual keyboard," as well as predictive search.

"This new touch screen experience makes reading the Kobo ereader just like reading a book but better," said Michael Serbinis, chief executive of Kobo. "It makes eReading more accessible to a wider demographic. Most kids today think if it's not touch, it's broken."

The Kobo ereader will also feature Reading Life, a social platform for eReading. Reading Life tracks statistics like minutes per reading session and number of pages turned. Readers will soon be able to earn rewards through challenges that give prizes for the amount that they read, or the frequency.

Additionally, the Kobo eReader Touch Edition will be offered in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. The first generation Kobo ereader will now be sold for $99.99.
