Netanyahu AIPAC Speech: Israeli Prime Minister Says Country Cannot Return To 1967 Borders

Netanyahu

By AMY TEIBEL   05/24/11 12:15 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- Israel's prime minister promised to present his vision for an Israeli-Palestinian peace in a speech before U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday, but vowed his country would not return to mid-1967 borders that he termed "indefensible."

Benjamin Netanyahu made this pledge in an address Monday to thousands of pro-Israel American Jews and U.S. lawmakers. His speech drew roaring cheers and standing ovations, a sign of the powerful backing he enjoys in the U.S. as the White House pressures him to do more to renew stalled Mideast peacemaking.

The warm reception Netanyahu enjoyed at the gala dinner of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee contrasted sharply with the contentious quality of some of his recent exchanges with President Barack Obama precisely over border issues.

His planned address on Tuesday to a joint meeting of Congress, where Israel enjoys strong bipartisan backing, could similarly remind Obama, ahead of his re-election bid, of the political price he might pay if he tries to push Netanyahu too hard.

In that speech, Netanyahu said, he will "outline a vision for a secure Israeli-Palestinian peace."

But in language that suggested he was not going to take a conciliatory pose, he promised to "speak the unvarnished truth."

"This conflict has raged for 100 years because the Palestinians refuse to end it. They refuse to accept a Jewish state."

A peace agreement, he said, must assure Israel's security: "Israel cannot return to the indefensible 1967 borders," he declared, rekindling the dispute with Obama in a possible effort to placate territorial hardliners in his government.

Borders became an issue last week when Obama, in a major Mideast policy speech, took the position that any negotiations on final borders of the Jewish and Palestinian states must be based on the boundaries Israel held in 1967 before capturing east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip – lands the Palestinians claim for their hoped-for state.

In direct statements and through aides, Netanyahu suggested Obama did not understand Israel's security needs or the realities of the conflict-riven Mideast.

Obama said clearly in his policy speech and in his own address before AIPAC on Sunday that the territorial markers could be adjusted through mutually agreed land swaps – a principle accepted by the Palestinians that would allow Israel to retain major settlement blocs and help assure its security.

But Netanyahu has repeatedly sidelined this part of the Obama message.

In a sign of the sympathy Netanyahu can hope to enjoy in Congress, Obama's own political ally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, challenged Obama on the border issue at the AIPAC dinner.

"No one should set premature parameters about borders, about building or about anything else," Reid, D-Nev., said.

The reference to building alluded to earlier U.S. demands that Israel renew an expired moratorium on settlement construction.

Peacemaking with the Palestinians stalled in late 2008, shortly before Obama and Netanyahu each took office. Obama had hoped to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table and wrest a deal by September 2011. But those efforts foundered after Israel refused to extend a settlement construction slowdown and Palestinians abandoned negotiations after three short weeks, saying continued Israeli building on land they want for a future state did not show good faith.

Now, they are refocusing their strategy on trying to obtain a unilateral declaration of statehood at the U.N. when the General Assembly meets in September. Israel would like to derail that campaign, which, if successful as expected, could compound its diplomatic isolation.

The U.S. also opposes unilateral action, which would put Washington in the awkward position of having to vote against Palestinian statehood at a time when calls for greater democracy are ringing out across the Arab world.

Further complicating peace efforts is a unity deal between rival Palestinian factions that would bring violently anti-Israel Hamas militants into the Palestinian government.

Obama has said Israel should not be expected to negotiate with a government that does not recognize its right to exist.

Anti-Israel hecklers interrupted Netanyahu's speech several times, but supporters drowned them out, leaping to their feet, giving him a standing ovation and at one point chanting his nickname, "Bibi, Bibi" and pumping their arms in the air.

Question?(s)
I remember reading bout how we just gave the Jews a country after WWII back in high school& my first thought was what about the country & the people that were already living there?I dont support terror ,but how come no one supports Palestines right to exist?I dont think Israel should be able to just go & take more&more land just because they can.I must confess I dont know enough about the whole thing. But no one ever seems to be on Palestines side,I mean killing is bad.But if some one came to the USA and said we are going to give Florida to Texas to the gypsies becuase they dont have a country wouldnt we be pissed?Im sure im probably gonna get smashed on for this but I was just wondering.

Would you make the same comment about Bush the terrible. Just think about what he did in our name and btw he did support going back to the 1967 borders. Also, regarding the speech that Netananayu made to the Congress. He essentially said the same thing that Obama said in his speech to AIPAC but it seems that some people do not listen as well as they should. They are alway ready to criticize but it does not matter. Obama is doing a great job as POTUS and there is nothing or nobody that can change that fact......nuff said

No Surprise here! I've mentioned about this Congressional, and to a much lesser extent White House, Fawning to Israeli Lobby and certain Bad, even Traitorous American Jews. I think the whole thing is disgusting, I don't know how American people would put up with such gratuitous insult. The quickest way to go about doing is voting out the fawning and shameless lawmakers -- those who received significant Jewish Interests' campaign contributions should be voted out of offices, period! Dare the people do this!

I strongly suggest you watch a documentary "ISLAM" "What the West Needs to Know" netflix (documentaries) I am not monetarily or politically motivated, only live for humanity. Before you confuse what the true issue here is, you may want to educate and enlighten yourself on rhe truth. You are being played and I am sure you would not like to be thought of as just one in a flock. I send this to you out of kindness and only can hope you watch the documentary.

I have not watched your suggested documentary but I've heard about the false notion that somehow Islam is totally evil and the Islamists will try conquer West, etc.. I don't that kind of distorted view of Islam, and all Muslims; though some crazy Islamic groups(i.e. Al Qaeda ... et al) wanted to promote the Islam vs. West, but the great majority of all Muslims are Not Bin Laden people/disciples -- in fact, they hated him! So I don't buy into Islamophobia. Reasons being that historically Muslims are tolerant to other faiths living in their midst; the Jews, living in the Middle East before the creation of present Israel, could testify to that; and thus I believe the creation Israel brought about the era of Arabs- Israelis conflicts -- particularly the Palestinians--Isralis conflict!

Sorry for too many writing errors below; they should be:

... I don't "hold' that kind ...
... Islamists will try "to" conquer "the' West ...
... to promote the Islam vs. West "conflict" ...
... the creat "of" Israel brought about "current" era of Arabs vs. Israelis conflicts ...

"Benjamin Netanyahu vowed his country would not return to mid-1967 borders " if this is true, then he is more concern with material things than spiritual matters. I have never read in any religious books than "God" gave any land title to any one group. In fact relion states that "God is every where". So what's the fight and the fuss about? "Love and Peace" Not hate and dishonesty.

The reference is in the Bible which historically gives the land of Israel to the Israelites.
There is no mention of domain and land ownership in the Koran.
Point of contention.

Unless the Palestinians recognize Israel's right to exist any negotiations are pointless. Negotiating your own extinction is illogical. Weather or not there is any peace is all up to the Palestinians.

Rae Abileah, a Jewish-American activist of Israeli descent with the peace group CodePink, disrupted Netanyahu’s speech. Standing in the congressional gallery, she yelled, “No more occupation! Stop Israel war crimes! Equal rights for Palestinians! Occupation is indefensible!” As she screamed, members in the audience tackled her to the ground, and undercover security forces later dragged her outside. She was taken to George Washington University Hospital where she was treated for neck and shoulder injuries. At the hospital, police arrested Abileah and charged her with disorderly conduct for disrupting Congress.

Have you seen the request put out by Rabbi Michael Lerner's Tikkun organization and Jewish Voices for Peace? I have forwarded letters to elected officials from their sites.
It is valuable, I would hope, to become aware of an involved with organizations and individuals of American Jews to demonstrate that this appeal is not founded in anti-anything--except the inhumane designation of a Israel as a so-called Jewish state. Think of how some of "us" object to the labeling of the USA as "A Christian Nation," when it has always been a conglomerate--even when it was just English-German, and the overthrown First Nations.

Palestine belongs to its NATIVES; Palestinian Muslims, Palestinian Christians, Palestinian Jews and Palestinians Atheists .Their real war is against non Palestinian Polish Jews, non Palestinian Russian Jews and other non Palestinian European Jewish drifters who have no right in any part; neither the 1967 nor the 1948. Europe should make up for its mistakes and leave all native Palestinians live in peace.

What rights did these guys have in Palestine:
David Ben-Gurion who was born in Plonsk, Poland
Benzion Netanyahu who was born in Warsaw, Poland
Menachem Begin who was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland
Yitzhak Shameer who was born in Ruzinoy, Poland
Golda Meir – who was born in Russia

Although you have the "right" of designation as you have, I earned that only the fans of greater hostility are ignited when it appears that "I" is singling out a particular person or group. This only further imbeds their fears. I try to not appeal to fear or to infuriate. My goal is to TRY to enlighten, inform, and possibly, convince that there is more to the story than is apparent.

I'd like to speak plainly at all times, but knowing how human emotions respond--even when trying the damndest, is disheartening. I choose to try--to offer information that can be verified--even if dis-believed. Maybe, one time in a trillion it will work. This comes of being a perpetual outsider. Effort goes to trying to balance accuracy and survival. No argument. (Smile)

The Israelis are a funny people. Something about the Palestinian policy of "The JOOOOOOOs must DIE!" just makes them not want to negotiate. Go figure.

Never before the occupation have they been killed in Palestine - well may be once by the crusaders. But in Europe throughout history they have truly been victimized until the Europeans thought : we can kill them no more, lets move them to Palestine. Palestinian Jews have always lived in peace in Palestine.

To all you Bibi lovers, perhaps you should glance at the Israeli papers to see what they think of his visit. They consider it a failure. Does that make you change your mind? Didn't think so. You see, unlike all you cheerleaders, Israelis know what his stance means. It means that the peace that the majority of Israelis seek is not possible.

It's kind of a given that Israel will never revert to pre 67 borders so why even discuss the issue?
Glad Bibi got his point across and now we can all move on.

Just because Bi Bi wants it, doesn't mean he can have it. Please go back to kindergarden and try passing again. Lesson 1. All people are special in their own way. Lesson 2. Sharing is good. Lesson 3. Killing is bad. ...etc...

Quite right, lets not talk about compromise and the rights of a bunch of people who have no power, lets all move move on, and continue on the path that will slowly but surely lead to conflagration.

As humans, we sure have been shortchanged by our leaders, presidents, and represenatives. Average citizens, who make up the 99% of humanity, do not want war or conflict. Iit's the policies of nations and religions that divide us. It's their power struggles like little bullies in competitons to see who has the most marbles in their bag.
There is no reason on this earth we can't live in peace and respect each others differences and accomplish the goals of uniting us all. Why does this not happen?-----there's no money to be made from peace. There's no power and control without dominating.
Why can't these two factions share the land equally and amongst each other? Because those in control won't allow it.
I'm beginning to believe we are no better than our lower species.

I mean I agree with you. There is no way Israel can go back to '67 borders. Obama and the UN are delusional. As long as Hamas rules there can be no negotiations.
01:11 AM on 05/26/2011
As long as Israel is ruled by right wing fanatics, supported by today's equivalent of brown shirts, all bent on expansionism at any price, there will be no peace.

Just heard the re-broadcast of Charlie Rose's show with four analysts on the speech and Congress' reaction to Netanyahu. None of the four seem to believe that there is really ANY solution to the Palestinian/Israeli problem. All four found Netayanhu the winner of this round. All four focused on the Hamas/Palestinian Authority unity as THE biggest stumbling block, BUT I still give Obama a lot of plaudits for his speech and his bringing into the open the problem of the 1967 ceasefire line. Netanyahu has assumed, that being a Jew automatically makes you an Israeli...or planting a tree (in my younger days) in some tree park in Israel. Can't begin to imagine why Congress would assume they have to stomp and cheer the chief of Israel other than some misguided sense that they are Israelis too...Ich bin ein Israeli ?? And for this Congress to think they can join Netanyahu in scoffing at a sitting president is madness of some sort. It completely rearranges my support for Barack Obama. What he said took courage. Peace "negotiators" know the 1967 borders...with swaps...as a basic pin of American foreign policy; every president knew it was but Obama had the guts to say it straight out. If this country thought the Palestinians rights, their interests, were unimportant, they probably should have helped the Israeli Defense Force...defending against enemies like women, children and old men...rampaging through Gaza, destroying homes and schools...some with children in them.

I marvel at the ability to think clearly about so-called "emotional issues" by you, and a few others, contrasted with the inability to do the same by a Congress of so-called educated officials. It must be known that, perhaps, 95% of what most humans think(sic) is rational is actually "gut fear." and resulting ignorance.
