Netanyahu Speaks To U.S. Congress In Rare Address (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.S. Congress on Tuesday that he was willing to make "painful compromises" for peace with the Palestinians, for the first time explicitly saying some West Bank settlements would find themselves outside Israel's final borders.

But he tacked on a list of oft-stated conditions that have been unacceptable to the Palestinians. A senior Palestinian official immediately rejected Netanyahu's peace outline as a "declaration of war."

Speaking before a warmly receptive joint meeting of Congress that showered him with more than two dozen sustained standing ovations, Netanyahu said Israel wants and needs peace but repeated his flat rejection of a return to what he called the "indefensible" borders that Israel had before the 1967 Mideast war.

He also restated Israel's refusal to repatriate millions of Palestinian refugees and their families to homes in Israel that they lost in fighting over the Jewish state's 1948 creation.

Netanyahu maintained anew that contested Jerusalem could not be shared with the Palestinians, who want the eastern sector of the holy city as capital of their hoped-for state. And he insisted that Israel maintain a long-term military presence on what would be the eastern border of a Palestinian state.

"Israel will never give up its quest for peace," Netanyahu said, adding that he is "willing to make painful compromises to achieve this historic peace."

But he that said Israel would not negotiate with terrorists and urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to rip up a power-sharing agreement that his moderate Fatah faction has signed with the militant group Hamas, which does not recognize Israel's right to exist.

In the West Bank, Nabil Shaath, a senior Palestinian official, called Netanyahu's speech "a declaration of war against the Palestinians."

"This is an escalation and unfortunately, it received a standing ovation," he said, noting that Netanyahu had rejected all key Palestinian demands on key issues like future borders, the competing claims of Jersualem and the fate of refugees.

Israel, which enjoys strong bipartisan backing in Congress, has been rattled by President Barack Obama's support for drawing the future borders of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state on the basis of Israel's pre-1967 war frontiers.

Netanyahu had repeatedly challenged the president's position, ignoring Obama's assertion that the territorial markers could be adjusted through mutually agreed land swaps. The Palestinians accept that principle, which would allow Israel to retain major West Bank settlement blocs and help to assure its security.

In his speech before Congress, Netanyahu backed off from his dispute with Obama, acknowledging that the president has not called for a return to the exact borders Israel held before capturing east Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war.

Obama had, in large part, staked his reputation in the Muslim world on finding solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. But he has not been able to draw Israelis and Palestinians back to the bargaining table for sustained talks, and the Palestinians are refusing to come back as long as Israeli settlement construction continues on lands they want for a future state.

In lieu of negotiations, the Palestinians are campaigning to obtain U.N. recognition of Palestinian statehood when the General Assembly meets in September. Such recognition wouldn't hand them a state in practice, but it would make things even tougher for Israel internationally.

The U.S. also opposes a unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood and is holding out for a negotiated compromise.

Netanyahu congratulated the United States for killing al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, wishing him "good riddance," and dismissed early shouts from an anti-Israel protester as evidence that freedom of speech is alive and well in the United States and is respected in both countries.

Memo to Bibi - Stay out of US politics.

President Obama made it crystal clear that he favored using the 1967 borders as a common reference-point for the Israeli's and Palestinians to use as a "base-line" to make land-swap proposals and counter-proposals.

Netayanu conveniently chose to omit this - inferring instead that President Obama wanted Israel to concede the 1967 borders as a precondition for negotiations - a totally false (and may I say divisive) accusation. To add insult to injury, various members of the news media (CNN more than MSNBC this time around) have selectively reported Obama's position along Netayanu's lines.

Politics pure and simple.

It may score cheap points for Netayanu in the short run, but may actually undermine the Israeli effort over the long haul (because the truth has this embarrassing habit of eventually finding its way to the forefront and Netayanu's credibility will suffer)

Netanyahu's devastating speech to Congress, in which he eviscerated Obama's foreign policy to repeated and prolonged standing ovations by members of both parties, may have been the single most stunning and effective rebuke of an American President by a foreign leader in history. The Prime Minister of Israel destroyed his arrogant, professorial opponent and gave him a lesson in the fine art of diplomacy and foreign affairs.

Facts about the Palestine Israeli conflict that are not known.

1. When the U.N. was debating resoltion 181 to Partition Palestine, The Arabs made a counter offer. Offering a democratic secular state.

2 Well before any military action was taken.

The Arab Delegations submitted proposals in the Ad Hoc Committee in order to refer the whole legal issue raised for a ruling by the International Court of Justice. The said proposals were never put to vote by the president in the Assembly. The United Nations is an International body entrusted with the task of enforcing peace and justice in international affairs. How would there be any confidence in such a body if it bluntly and unreasonably refuses to refer such a dispute to the International Court of Justice?

To wit: The position of the Arabs had been clear from the beginning, but the Arab Higher Committee issued a statement on September 29 (1947) reiterating that “the Arabs of Palestine were determined to oppose with all the means at their disposal, any scheme that provided for segregation or partition, or that would give to a minority special and preferential status”. It instead

advocated freedom and independence for an Arab State in the whole of Palestine which would respect human rights, fundamental freedoms and equality of all persons before the law, and would protect the legitimate rights and interests of all minorities whilst guaranteeing freedom of worship and access to the Holy Places.[

Blatant psychobabble. With the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem visiting the Auschwitz death camp and on record for asking Hitler to move faster with the "final solution", with their own Waffen SS group, and with the Egyptians welcoming Rommel with open arms. The entire thing was and is still a sham.
And we can see by the current state of the rest of the Arab/Muslim middle east that "freedom" is not something they support for any people. Nevermind for people to be folded into a "secular state". They have 98.7% of the middle east. Most would be satisfied. DOZENS of Muslim countries, and ONE Jewish country and they call it an abomination.

'Our lives became something we'd never dreamt': The former Israeli soldiers who have testified against army abuses---Former Israeli soldiers who have testified against army abuses have for the first time given up their anonymity, to make their voices all the harder to ignore. Donald Macintyre gets an exclusive preview of a powerful new book--conclusion is contrary to the view that "Israel is withdrawing from the Palestinian Territories slowly and with the appropriate caution and security". The IDF soldiers quoted "describe an indefatigable attempt to tighten Israel's hold on the territories, as well as on the Palestinian population

A point of view? These are former IDF soldiers. It's not a point of view it's their reality. Huge difference.

It's odd that you respond to anyone and everyone critical of Israel and its policies. Are you getting paid per post or per thread. IMF or JIDF (Jewish Internet Defense League)?

They do not obey GOD'S Ten Commandments, or at the very least of them the 8th: Thou shalt not steal. I do not disrespect any who love GOD and obey him, but these people obviously are not obeying Him, and that is one of the most important acts that is the fruit of loving GOD and that is to obey Him. What else do they also disobey of His commandments? Ye shall know them by their fruits. As it is and the history I know of them in recent years, I would not trust them. But in GOD I do. I hear them say nothing about what GOD says about what they are doing. Does anyone else have that sacred knowledge from our Lord?

The World Is Tired of War

Tuesday May 24, 2011, was a sad day for the United States of America.

It is an undeniable fact that Israel must remain a secure state of the Jewish people. No if's about it. But for Benjamin Natanyahu, who holds only 27 of 120 seat Knesset, to get such a rousing standing ovation from the Congress of the most powerful nation in the world, shows how the Israeli lobby has influenced the Congress of the United States of America. This ostensibly undermines U. S. fairness. Mr. Natanyahu, as we know, is no Mr. Yizhak Rabin. He hates peace.

Middle East peace is world peace and security. It is in the best strategic, political, security and economic interest of all the people of the world but especially Israel, Arabs and the U. S. to have a real lasting peace in the Middle East.

No rousing applause to emptiness will secure this peace. It will take fairness, honesty and painful choices to achieve this peace.

I pray some reason prevails very soon before September when the international community will join the Palestinians and speak truth to power.
What is good for the goose, is good for the gander. The world can use some peace.

In case anyone is wondering where.....
Public diplomacy in Israel (also hasbara) (Hebrew: הסברה‎) refers to public relations efforts to disseminate information about Israel.[1][2] The term is used by the Israeli government and its supporters to describe efforts to explain government policies and promote Israel in the face of what they consider negative press about Israel around the world. Others view hasbara as a euphemism for propaganda.[3][4][5]
In 2002, the Israeli State Comptroller's office issued a report critical of Israel's PR efforts, "A lack of an overall strategic public relations conception and objective" and lack of coordination between the various organizations were mentioned. Funding levels are modest; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spent about US$8.6 million on these efforts in 2002, and the Government Press Office was only budgeted at US$100,000.[23]

In 2008, Yarden Vatikay was appointed to coordinate Israel’s domestic and foreign media policy.[24]

In 2009, Israel's foreign ministry organized volunteers to add pro-Israeli commentary on news websites.[25] [26] [27] In July 2009, it was announced that the Israeli Foreign Ministry would assemble an "internet warfare" squad to spread a pro-Israel message on various websites, with funding of 600,000 shekels (c $150,000).[28][29]

Hawaii is a state of the USA. It's residents can aspire to and achieve the Presidency of the United States.
The West Bank and Gaza are so not states, it's people are under subjugation - they are under Israeli Apartheid law. In Israeli occupied Palestine the residents can aspire to nothing.
