7 U.S. Soldiers Dead In Taliban Bombing In Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Nine NATO service members were killed Thursday in Afghanistan, including seven U.S. troops among eight who died when a powerful bomb exploded in a field where they were patrolling on foot, officials said.

Two Afghan policemen also died and two others were wounded in the explosion in the mountainous Shorabak district of Kandahar province, 12 miles (19 kilometers) from the Pakistan border, said Gen. Abdul Raziq, chief of the Afghan border police in the province.

"Two months ago, we cleared this area of terrorists, but still they are active there," Raziq said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast.

"A bomb was planted for them in a field," Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi told The Associated Press in a telephone call.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information, confirmed that seven American service members died in the bombing.

The international military coalition reported that one additional NATO service member was killed Thursday when a helicopter crashed in the east.

U.S. officials said seven American soldiers were killed in the bombing. NATO said an eighth soldier was also killed, but his nationality was not immediately released.

It was the deadliest day for coalition forces in Afghanistan since April 27, when a veteran Afghan military pilot opened fire at Kabul airport and killed eight U.S. troops and an American civilian contractor.

Thursday's blast was the worst single attack against NATO forces by one of the Taliban's crude, homemade bombs since October 2009. Seven soldiers from a unit based in Fort Lewis, Washington, died Oct. 27, 2009 when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Arghandab district, also in Kandahar province.

"It was a big, powerful blast," said Gen. Tefeer Khan Ghogyaria, who oversees Afghan border police in three provinces in the south. "A container of explosives was placed in the ground and it exploded when the NATO forces were passing. They were on a foot patrol."

Roadside bombs killed 268 American troops in Afghanistan last year, a 60 percent increase over the previous year, even as the Pentagon employed new measures to counter the Taliban's makeshift weapon of choice. Defense officials attributed the rise in casualties to the surge in U.S. forces in Afghanistan last year.

The number of U.S. troops wounded by what the military terms improvised explosive devices also soared, according to the most recent U.S. defense figures. There were 3,366 U.S. service members injured in IED blasts – up from the 1,211 hurt by the militants' crudely made bombs in 2009, the figures show.

Officials with the Pentagon's Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, based outside Washington, has said that additional explosive sensors, bomb analysts and specially trained dogs have helped battle the roadside bombs.

Last year, the Pentagon provided $495 million to buy 34 tethered surveillance blimps that give troops a bird's eye view of certain areas and sent in more unmanned surveillance aircraft so route-clearance patrols would have the benefit of full-motion video. The Pentagon also delivered more than 5,000 hand-held bomb detectors, improved training and sent additional equipment to Afghanistan to counter the threat.

Southern and eastern Afghanistan are the most volatile areas in Afghanistan.

Tens of thousands of U.S., NATO and Afghan forces have been working for months to rout the Taliban from their strongholds in the south. The Taliban have retaliated with targeted assassinations of Afghan officials and attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. Eastern Afghanistan, along the Pakistan border, also has been the scene of heavy violence.

On May 1, insurgents declared the start of a spring offensive against NATO and the Afghan government. NATO has been expecting the Taliban to stage a series of spectacular and complex attacks, and the group has already carried out a number of them recently.

The effectiveness of the Taliban's long-awaited spring campaign, code-named Badr after one of the Prophet Muhammad's decisive military victories, could affect the size of President Barack Obama's planned drawdown of U.S. troops in July. Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, has said the size of the withdrawal will depend on conditions on the ground.

The alliance has committed itself to handing over control of security in the country to Afghans by 2014.

Thirty-eight international service members have been killed so far this month, including at least 13 Americans. So far this year, 189 coalition troops have died in Afghanistan.

In effect, declare overall VICTORY in eliminating any terrorists that can be found, and leave behind enough military forces to maintain the situation.

Cockroaches are never eliminated, the are repressed. Terrorism cannot be 100% eliminated, but it can be controlled and kept out of sight.

But this is already on the way.

Americans can feel satisfied in helping the rest of the world--- especially if they empathize with the difficult situation of whoever is in charge of Afghanistan and Pakistan and keep some presence but realize that nation building is up to them.

It is time to bring this Bush fiasco to an end and start a removal of American troops from this corrupt country....Afganistan....... stop giving them funds that the US cannot afford and cut American aid. Stick by the agenda to remove troops from Irag.......Americans have given too much blood and money to this country already because of lies by George Bush. Before Bush came into power the US was running a budget surplus....with the Bush tax cuts and his two wars and Bush policies...... the national debt was $12.6 trillion.....When Bush came into office the national debt was $5.7 trillion. Republicans say Obama is responsible for the national debt....now at over $14trillion even though Bush increased the national debt from $5.7 trillion to $12.6 trillion. What has happened...Clinton leaves surpluses and Bush increases the national debt.....it would appear George Bush is the biggest spender in US history...and with his lies about invading Iraq.....he is right up there as being the worst president ever.

Clinton did the same thing Obama is doing and ask any retired military or any one on social security. Ask them about their cost of living allowance being taking away by Clinton and now Obama for 2 years. 3rd year as president and can't bring the troops home as promised. Easier to blame Bush

I said the same thing to Bush for 8 long yrs., most of which we had absolutley "no" business in Iraque, but he took my husband and my son there anyway--though the original mission was all about Bin Ladin sacking those in the Pentigon and Twin Towers. Somehow the Iraquis took priority over our own. So you can thank Bush for Trillions of $'s of debt, thousands of men and women killed and wounded, limbs lost. Broken families and on and on. My son still suffers nightmares (TY Bush). While that man did "0" to get our troops out of harm's way, Obama actually gave the okay to take Bin Laden out, while all Bush had to say was, "Don't know where he is, can't find him." Obama is and has been drawing down slowly. It doesn't happen overnight.

My last comment must have been too offensive so will rephase. Last I heard Pres Obama is the president and not ex president Bush. Let's take a leadership position and bring the troops home as you promised in 2007 prior to election and stop blaming Bush.

As a combat veteran and retired soldier I'm trying to figure out how they spend $14.5 Million dollar each for tethered surveillance blimps. Hi-tech and all, that sounds way over the top. Of course government contractors have never been known as a whole to try and keep costs down.

The truth is our politicians and media are abandoning our troops long ago they don't even cover the war they got us into from there lies they sold. This is a soldier/veteran update to all Before you leave the military, even if you're getting a medical discharge make sure your family or you get a copy of all your records medical and personal. The Federal agency that's supposed to hold them NPRC is losing them on purpose. I know, IF they lose your records the VA will deny you because there is no records. you will be waiting years -and have to meet the VA board of appeals because the government is incompetent. Don't bother writing your politicians or the White House they don't care. The government will lose your records and admit it, then the VA will deny you your claims saying because no records no claim approval you can even give them the letters from NPRC saying it was their fault, they dot care the Federal government has no morals or ethics and their proud of it. Look what they're doing to us not a 13 percent increase of triage but fight tour phony wars. http://www.stripes.com/news/military-update-military-groups-divided-over-bump-in-tricare-fees-1.135750

Sgt. Riker?

Let me just say that, with respect to your advice about saving all military records, I agree you 100%. I'm a Nam Vet., and, believe it or not, I'm still in possession of every single General and Special Orders (BIT, AIT, Airborne School, Awards, Promotions, Unit Transfers, etc.) issued to me during my 3-years of active duty military service. While I'm NOT in possession of my Medical Records, I do have a copy of my inter-unit (173rd Abn. Bde's) Casualty Report which records the fact that I, and my fellow Recon. Squad members were all WIA and Med-a-Vac (Dusted-Off) first to "B" Med at LZ English, then to the Army's 67th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon.

As for my dealings with the DVA. Honestly, to this very day, I can say that I have never encountered any problems receiving prompt attention at any VA medical facilty. They have always treated me with the utmost respect. OMT: Many years AFTER (in '94) my service in Vietnam, I did seek treatment for PTSD at the VA Medical Center in Manhattan, N.Y. The "shrink" who interviewed me made note of just three key items appearing on my DD-214. They were: (1) My MOS (Military Occupational Skill) was -"11B2P" meaning I was a Light Weapons Infantryman, (2). I was Awarded Two (2) Purple Heart Medals, and (3). I was also awarded the CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge). That was it. No problems or hassles.

I am a Navy wife w/a rare terminal illness. Looks like my husband may have to get out soon and I will be among the walking dead so-to-speak, with my catastrophic disease. I am so happy that you gave Sgt Riker that advise though, because what he wrote made me feel very sad. TY

be sure to thank Obama for those increases in medical care.. he wanted troops to pay all of it! he's lucky he doesn't have to pay troops an hourly wage, we'd be broke!

Your right, but you can see above and below we have some employee's of the Government in here and there protective sounding boards. Some of there people you can tell work for the man. If you got good care great, stay there., but you go to mil.com, the real board of thousands of veterans it is a different tune. You can go to utube this is Rieckhoff on CNN, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHbdIhFDbzc, and here gobs of news CNN to MSNBC complaints from veterans complaints about the care to the VA medical to the VA compensation area. . If it so great, why do we veterans that have to pay out of ther own pocket that have to start up support groups organizations like DAV and th VFW and many others, so they can fight with the VA and fight with polticians. I guess we do not need them according Captain Great sale.
I guess these organizations below are just wrong too.

I am so glad all of the Nay Sayers are US citizens. Otherwise, you most certainly would be dead for speaking as you do about our government. Kiss the ground you walk on, because you know nothing of what you speak. As the daughter, wife and mother of military men, grow a brain and as my mother would tell me, be an encourager instead of all the criticizing. Morale is not low but if it were it would be wonderful for our troops to know they were appreciated and respected for doing what they know we need to do to keep our country free. You have no idea of the complexities that are involved.
