Hopefully last week's disturbing cattle truck spill on I-294 hasn't spoiled your appetite for red meat before Memorial Day weekend. As you clean off your grill and hope for sunshine, consider stopping by one of Chicago's greatest butcher shops for everything from Chicago-style brats to kangaroo meat.

Check out our picks for the city's best meat markets here. Did we miss your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

The Butcher & Larder

If you've seen "Food, Inc." then you'll appreciate The Butcher & Larder, owned by former Mado owners, husband-and-wife team Rob and Allie Levitt. Meats are locally sourced and butchered on site.

You won't find a large meat case housed with overflowing stock at this boutique shop, located in Noble Square. However, what you will get are quality cuts, and the "farm-to-table" experience. Items change frequently, so call ahead and see what's available, or drop a special request. Country ribs and house mild Italian sausage will be available for the holiday weekend, along with three or four types of house-made sausage. The country ribs are anticipated to go quickly, as B&L only gets three whole pigs a week. Hint: A very limited supply of veal will also be available.
