Mark Zuckerberg: I'm Eating Only The Meat I Kill

Each year Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg aims to try something new and take on a different "personal challenge." Last year it was learning Chinese, this year it's a bit more dramatic of a change.

He's only eating what he kills with his own hands.

He told Fortune in an interview, "The only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself."

Since the new regimen started, he has killed several types of animals, including a pig and a goat.

Zuckerberg detailed the new diet in an email to Fortune.

He wrote:

This year, my personal challenge is around being thankful for the food I have to eat. I think many people forget that a living being has to die for you to eat meat, so my goal revolves around not letting myself forget that and being thankful for what I have. This year I've basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself. So far, this has been a good experience. I'm eating a lot healthier foods and I've learned a lot about sustainable farming and raising of animals.

Apparently, while the new method of determining what to eat may not be the most popular way to do things, those close to Zuckerberg are warming to it. According to the Fortune story, Zuckerberg's girlfriend also seems to be following the diet with him since they spend so much time together.

The new diet has begun with small steps. Zuckerberg started small with seafood, eventually moving up to chickens and larger animals. His first kill was a lobster, which he boiled alive.

I have been teaching vegetarianism for more than 40 years. There are lots of good reasons to cut down or eliminate meat and animal products. We have advocated Mark's action not only as a way of facing the killing, but also as a way to limit one's meat consumption since for most people, hunting, dressing, etc is time consuming. We have posted all our reasons on the HealthyHighways website.

I get his logic. I eat meat and I don't see it as a moral issue. However, what I do see as a moral issue is how the animals we eat are treated. This includes everything from what they're fed, how they are housed to how they are slaughtered. I am Muslim and one of the things regarding meat is to try to eat "Halal". Halal encompasses all of the above things. We need to have respect for the animals that we slaughter for our sustenance. We also need to have respect for out bodies and make sure that said meat isn't full of chemicals and hormones. Which in this country has unfortunately become an expensive and it seems sometimes impossible, feat.

This isn't a forum for religious discrimination. If you're looking for a debate look elsewhere.

Maybe this is some sort of way for him to show repentance.

The film Social Network was incredible. Smart guy and he
deserves some credit for that and high energy. But a
creep too. He was hired to create a Harvard related
web site, then constantly put off the owner's,
and came out with virtually the same site
as only his own. He ignored their pleas
for their work, or later for a settlement
[which they later won...].

Then he needs money to expand, and for a little start
up money, and business duties, his best friend helps
and becomes his partner. He is supposed to own
30%, and yet slowly is pushed out, and
was reduced to under 1% before finally
suing [ and winning ].

Think of that, you try to push out your friend
and reduce their shares to less than 3% of
what they were. How could someone
like that sleep at night ?

It's all the worse that there's plenty of money
to go around, so Zuckerberg would still be
worth many billions, and that was Not Enough ?

You just NAILED it. Seriously.

It's the same thing Microsoft did to IBM in the 90's...put off their contract work while incorporating some of the same stuff IBM wanted into Microsoft's own software.

Rich men are always known for killing things, sometimes people, sometimes animals they eat.
02:06 PM on 05/29/2011
The big news will be when he starts to eat roadkill.
12:36 PM on 05/29/2011
Well, since Zuckerberg is only going to eat what he has killed, then he should make himself a stew, consisting of ample portions of privacy, discretion, good taste, good and relevant information (killed by useless personal trivia) and a sense of what is truly important. He could call it Facecook.

"His first kill was a lobster, which he boiled alive." WOW! That took courage. So do other million people. Maybe he should read the Art of Manhood.
