Alkis Gerd'son, Former University of Victoria Student, Stays In Dorms For 20 Years

Student Stays In Dorms For 20 Years

A former University of Victoria student who had been living in his dorm room for the past 20 years and fighting eviction for the last three, lost his case in front of the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal last week.

Alkis Gerd'son argued that he needed to stay in the dorms because he had a mental disability.

The Vancouver Sun has more:

Gerd'son earned a bachelor's degree in 1997 and hasn't completed classes since then, but continued to live in a $655-a-month one-bedroom apartment on campus.

UVic repeatedly tried to evict Gerd'son, and served him an eviction notice in 2010, after winning its case against him in B.C. Supreme Court.

The eviction process was put on hold pending the conclusion of the human rights case.

Gerd'son has been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and allergies. He has been receiving disability since 2004.

The university had allowed Gerd'son to stay in the dorms, "out of compassion" but when he stopped paying rent in 2008, the school started eviction proceedings.

The British Columbia Supreme court upheld University of Victoria's eviction ruling last December.
