Casey Anthony Murder Trial: Witness Said Car Smelled Of Human Decomposition

Casey Anthony Trial

Casey Anthony's prosecutors on Friday provided a refreshing relief to the monotony of testimony adduced in the last few days of her capital murder trial when they called a key prosecution witness to the stand.

Simon Birch, the former manager of Johnson’s Wrecker, the Orlando towing company that impounded Anthony's Pontiac Sunfire on June 30, 2008 –- roughly two weeks after her daughter died -– delivered the most explosive testimony to date when he described inspecting the vehicle.

"It was an odor consistent to what I have smelled in the past when it comes to decomposition," said Birch, who noticed the odor while examining Anthony's car four or five days after it was impounded in the secure lot.

The towing veteran testified he has been exposed to about half-a-dozen dozen vehicles during the course of his 30-year career that have had deceased bodies in them and that he was familiar with the odor of decomposition. Having previously worked in the sanitation industry for two years, Birch said he was also familiar with the smell of garbage.

Birch testified that decomposing human remains have a "very unique and distinctive smell" and that there was no mistaking the nature of the odor that was emanating from Anthony's car.

"The instant flash in my mind was, 'Whoa, I know what that smell is,'" Birch said.

Anthony, 25, is on trial for the first-degree murder of her daughter, two-year-old Caylee. The trial continued Saturday with testimony from Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, and former boyfriend, Anthony Lazzaro. An emotional Cindy Anthony described the days leading up to the toddler's disappearance and asked prosecutors to remove a photo shown of Caylee. "I can't look at my granddaughter without getting upset," she said.

Caylee was last seen alive on June 16, 2008. Her disappearance was reported on July 15, 2008, the same day Casey Anthony's parents retrieved their daughter's car from Johnson’s Wrecker.

Prior to making her infamous 911 calls, in which she said she found her daughter's car and it "smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car," Cindy Anthony and her husband, George Anthony, went to Johnson's Wrecker and met with Birch to retrieve the car.

During his testimony on Friday, Birch said that when George Anthony opened the door to his daughter's vehicle, they were exposed to a "very potent" smell. When the two men opened the trunk of the vehicle, they discovered a bag of trash, which Birch testified he disposed of. The smell, however, was still present even after the trash was removed, he said.

Casey Anthony, with her attorney Cheney Mason, during day 20 of her first-degree murder trial at the Orange County Courthouse, in Orlando, Florida, Thursday, June 16, 2011.

The dramatic testimony of the tow lot manager set the stage once again for George Anthony. He was called to the witness stand for the third time in four days -– on this occasion to offer his own ornamental details about retrieving his daughter's vehicle.

Anthony, a former police detective, acknowledged he had smelled a "pretty strong odor" when he picked up the car. He testified that he was afraid of what he might find in the trunk of the vehicle and thought, "Please God, don’t let this be my Casey or my Caylee [in the trunk]," he testified.

During cross examination, Casey Anthony's defense attorney, Jose Baez, asked George Anthony why he drove his daughter's vehicle home from the tow yard, rather than contacting police. The question was an apparent attempt to establish George Anthony’s alleged involvement in a cover-up. That relates to Tuesday's opening statements, in which Baez alleged that Caylee died on June 16, 2008, when she drowned in her family's swimming pool. He had also said that George Anthony was the one who found his granddaughter's body.

"The reason you drove that car home and didn't call police and went to work is because you knew Caylee was dead already," Baez suggested.

"No. I did not," a visibly shaken Anthony replied.

Up until Baez's shocking opening statements about the swimming pool, Casey Anthony had claimed her daughter was abducted by a babysitter. Multiple searches were conducted and, in December 2008, a former Orange County meter reader named Roy Kronk found Caylee's remains near her family home.

Throughout the day Friday, jurors watched nearly a dozen store surveillance videos of Anthony shopping in the weeks after Caylee died, and a number of other witnesses were called to the stand to corroborate testimony of previous witnesses. The only other witness of note was the fiancée of Anthony's older brother, Lee Anthony.

Mallory Parker testified to several mundane events, including a trip to downtown Orlando in July 2008, when she and Lee Anthony were attempting to locate his sister. However, during cross examination, when Baez asked Parker about the relationship between Casey Anthony and Caylee, the witness became emotional and broke down on the stand.

"It was awesome," Parker said. She said the two had a "very special" bond, which she described as "amazing."

Anthony is accused of multiple charges, including capital murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and misleading law enforcement. The prosecution seeks the death penalty.

This young woman is crazy. They will say she knows right from wrong because she hid the body. That is the standard. Just because you still have natural fear, and horror and self loathing doesn't mean you are mentally well. She is so sick.

I have been wondering and I first thought that the Nanny could have been real and the Nanny did it. Then I thought a bit more and I wonder if Caylee's father is either her step-dad or her brother. Could it be that both parties committed the crime to cover up the facts? Or, another scenario.......maybe Caylee DID drown in the pool and they tried to make it LOOK as if she had been kidnapped/ killed. It seems ODD that there was a Gatorade bottle with the needle near Caylee's remains. That to me looks like it was planted. All in all, Casey should just come clean and tell the complete truth. She is probably going to spend the rest of her life in prison anyway so by telling the truth, the jury MAY actually have more sympathy that trying to read through the web of lies. Of course then this would be a lollipop, sugarplum world with Faries and candy drops falling off the trees.

Where is Casey Anthony biological father? And, who is Caylee's biological father?

Funny how we see no father nor paternal family of litte Caylee and no biological father for Casey. It's a wonder this young woman is so screwed up, something is wrong in this family. And that stepfather is wierd and momma seem controlling.

Doesn't it just kill you---how an amoral guy like Baez can think his role is to challenge every single finding in the whole very clear big picture. Maybe Baez should ask the judge to have every single prosecution witness's blood alcohol level checked. Maybe they're all drunk! Baez, and other defense lawyers like him see trials as one big game, a chance for him to show society that he's the smartest guy or smartest woman in the room. How--and when--did our legal system get this twisted, with people like Baez gravitating toward criminal law?

Ms Anthony deserves as strong as a defense as possible, that is how it works when it's guilty until proven innocent. Does anyone think she's innocent? Probably not, but the other side has to prove it. Please forgive him for putting on a good argument. When it is all circumstantial evidence, there is way more room for questions. Would you rather have an attorney who at every turn lets you know he agrees with you about his client? This is not twisted, this is great lawyering.

unfortunately from what i understand now is she came up on those charges just before or after her arrest for murder. too bad she didnt get caught and sentenced to prison before she killed caylee then we all would be on a different subject : (

This case is truly heart breaking and frustrating. I am a mother of 2 girls. The thought of harming my children has never crossed my mind. As mothers we may experience being upset with our children for not listening, for breaking something, for fighting with their siblings, etc. A true loving mother would never acknowledge even the thought of hurting their child. It frustrates me to see how Casey shows no remorse over Caylee's death. A mother that cared would not be out partying, sleeping around and acting as if absolutely nothing was wrong. I remember my oldest daughter being sick in the hospital and I felt that my whole life was crashing. I couldn't eat, sleep or socialize with people. I wanted to take my daughters place. Imagine that. My daughter wasn't dying (thank God) but I couldn't function knowing she was ill. My girls are my life. Casey Anthony in my opinion never wanted to have Caylee. It seems as if Caylee was a disturbance to her fast life. If this is how she felt, Why not give up her parental rights? She probably wouldn't be in this predicament. I don't believe anything that Casey Anthony says. She's just manipulative and lives in a web of lies. Nothing excuses her from taking the life of Caylee. Not even the fact that she was supposedly abused as a child. I know that justice will be served for Caylee's death. Our highest authority will be the judge of her actions.
05:05 PM on 05/31/2011
The sight of Casey Anthony makes me sick. I was a young mom and my daughter and son are the most important people in my life. If they went missing I would be out searching every minute of the day not out partying. I think Casey used the car as a babysitter and left Caylee in it and Caylee died from the heat in the car. Florida is brutally hot in the summer and it only takes a few minutes to kill a toddler locked in a closed up car.

i thought it was accidental chloroform suffication until i heard someone googled how to break a neck on her puter. now i believe it was intentional murder after watching her demeanor on old "you tube" videos back in the beginning and all the circumstantial and whatever evidence stacking up against her. casey is one sick puppy.

I still think that Casey did it. A loving mother would immediately let authorities know if her daughter has disappeared. No matter if it was a babysitter or anyone else for that matter. A loving mother would not be going to nightclubs, she would be at a police station, passing flyers around and asking the media for help! Let's put all the guessing to one side and see the obvious!

Let's look at this for a second.......Although perhaps only One Cell'd Brained folks may be able to ...but let's just think HYPOTHETICALLY lol...but really~The guilt in itself would kill a person, but now her daughter has just DIED~ Perhaps DADDY sexually abused her? No one knows but them~I'm an appointed Guardian Ad Litem for Criminal Court in Pinellas County. I'm more familiar than I'd like to be about Incest and Children in the system. We see thousands of children who have been sexually abused by fathers throughout their entire lives. Incest teaches detachment,

I'm glad to learn the father told someone "it was an accident that got out of hand." I suspect what we'll learn the "accident' wasn't a drowning, but a chloroform/drug cocktail overdose while Casey was using the trunk of her car as a "babysitter." Tape over the baby's mouth would ensure she'd be unable to cry out in case she woke up before Casey got back from her trist. Beyond sick.

Casey Anthony's parents must share some culpability IMO, there is something so odd about this family. I do not trust Casey's parents either, the matriarch appears to be, from all that has been written about her, a controlling, ball busting b**ch who has hated her daughter Casey since birth. Of course I'm speculating however something is not "right" with any of these people and some in-depth investigation into Casey's parents need to be done. Mr. Anthony is a police officer or a retired officer and I surely wouldn't put it past the investigating police department to take Mr. Anthony's word and believe all he says without question. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony creep me out.

No excuses given. Only speculation of possible involvement by Casey's parents.

Agreed. There is something seriously wrong with this whole family.

Responding to a comment by somebody who said Casey didn't steal from her parents. She certainly did, $39,000.00. When the mother called 911 the first time, she said, "I need somebody arrested for stealing $$ and a car. I have the bank statement here." She also went into their house each day when ma and pa were at work and she was staying with her Tony, to steal food to cook for him. AND Cindy testified Sat. that she didn't KNOW her kid was pg until June 30, delivered Aug 9. Casey's pal named Kiomarie and Casey had a discussion that Casey would give her the kid to adopt, WAY before June 30, and Cindy kiboshed that quick. If you haven't figured it out, they all live in an alternate universe, where using people, lying and stealing is just fine.

39,000 is a lot of money
over what period of time was this stolen?
do you know what she spent it on?
06:34 PM on 05/31/2011
In Dianne Fanning's book, "Mommy's Little Girl". Mostly credit cards. I will recheck that tomorrow and get back to you. Over a year's time. She spent it on her swell life style. As much as ma and pa supported her with a roof, auto, food, the babe's care, she hadda buy clothes, beer, etc.

Got it for you, Mamacita. Page 111. "That spring Cindy discovered another way her daughter was stealing $$ from her. Casey had hacked into her checking acct. on line to send paymets of $300-$450 per month to AT
