50 State Stereotypes In 2 Minutes (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/29/11 02:09 PM ET Updated: 07/29/11 06:12 AM ET

What would these United States be without our quirky differences? Not to mention the well-worn stereotypes those quirks have born. Oversimplified conceptions truly are American!

Author Paul Jury has some fun with that notion in the promo for his book below called "50 State Stereotypes In Two Minutes." We think you'll enjoy Jury's descriptions of both the states you hate as well as the ones you love (if not, how about that delightful background music?).

Check out the transcript to find a specific state. We always appreciate an equal-opportunity offender.

Could have gone with either the Meth Capitol, or the Puppy Mill Capitol for Missouri. Because ... you know ... we're BOTH!

Our legislators have their heads so far up their own bungholes they're doing laps. (Think it through, it makes sense, but you have to work in more than three dimensions.)

Everyone here needs to get a sense of humor- if you can't laugh at yourself than what good is life for? This is simply brilliant- wish I woulda thought of it first!

Montana "Because speed limits don't matter when you're drunk". Yup, that sounds about right. If you're a state senator on a boat w/ the only Congressman it really doesn't matter if you're drunk, beach your boat on some rocks and critically injure someone..you'll get off..just ask Greg Barkus.

Hey, you have that race, with all the foreign-named drivers in it and the "hot chick", at that track, and is shown on the Disney Network.

At least you're not known as the Meth Capital.

my, aren't we hip. Every state has charm, instead of going for the stereotype, how about a real two minute video that brings up some great little tidbit from every state? Now THAT would be cool!
07:03 AM on 06/01/2011
because that would be educational and interesting...but not at all funny or 'cool'.

No, I got it. But any filmmaker with a nice little soundtrack and a cameraman willing to travel could have delivered the stereotypes. I would not even be surprised if they were Canadian (they seem to be the most innovative auteurs these days). But, my point was "why?". Not informative, not cute, not groundbreaking.

Think how much more entertaining it may have been if, for example, he'd said about Mississippi, "Where Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear, calling it unsportsmanlike, which led to the first Teddy Bear", or about Iowa, "It is against the law to wink at a strange woman". It could be just as entertaining, without being so obvious.

Yes it is. And I live in North Florida and the Florida stereotype is true as well.
