Obama Acts As Healer-In-Chief In Tornado-Stricken Joplin, Missouri

Obama Joplin Speech

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/29/11 05:05 PM ET Updated: 07/29/11 06:12 AM ET

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Face to face with the legions of homeless and the bereaved, President Barack Obama on Sunday toured the apocalyptic landscape left by Missouri's killer tornado, consoled the community and committed the government to helping rebuild shattered lives.

Obama said survivors of the disaster in Joplin are showing the world how to come together, and he pledged that the nation, as he put it, "will be with you every step of the way."

Obama spoke at a memorial service for victims on Sunday. He said it's impossible to know when or why such devastation strikes. But he praised neighbors for helping each other at great risk to themselves. He said there are heroes "around us all the time."

"This is not just your tragedy. This is a national tragedy, and that means there will be a national response," Obama said.

Air Force One flew over a massive swath of brown as far as the eye could see - a landscape of flattened houses and stripped trees - on its approach to Joplin. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and others greeted him on the tarmac before they set out for their first stop, a walking tour of a destroyed neighborhood. A memorial service punctuated a day of remembrance one week after the disaster.

Obama's motorcade pulled into a neighborhood where downed trees cleaved open houses, roofs were stripped or blown off, cars were cratered and splintered wood was everywhere. He saw nothing whole, but rather small domestic sights - a view into a room with a TV still in place, a recliner sitting amid rubble, a washer-dryer standing next to a decimated house. American flags were planted here and there in the mess.

"Sorry for your loss," Obama told an anguished woman, hugging her twice as they talked. Another woman told him that her uncle lives up the road - he survived but his house did not. "Tell your uncle we're praying for him," the president said.

To those working at the scene, the president said: "We appreciate everything you guys are doing. God bless you." One volunteer told him that people were streaming in from other states to help any way they could.

Obama vowed: "We are going to be here long after the cameras leave. We're not going to stop `til Joplin's back on its feet."

Obama returned to the U.S. on Saturday from a six-day European tour of Ireland, Britain, France and Poland. After days of focusing on the U.S. relationship with the rest of the world, he turned to an even more critical connection: his own, with the American people. He was visiting survivors and the bereaved from the worst tornado in decades, which tore through Joplin a week ago leaving more than 120 dead and hundreds more injured. At least 40 remain unaccounted for, and the damage is massive.

Consoling his fellow Americans is a task Obama has had to assume with increasing frequency of late, after the mass shooting in Arizona in January in which Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was injured, when tornadoes struck Tuscaloosa, Ala., last month and, more recently, when flooding from the Mississippi inundated parts of Memphis, Tenn.

Such moments can help define a president, but habitually even-tempered Obama is more apt to offer handshakes and hugs than tears and deep emotion.

Though times of trouble can erase politics and unite people, a phenomenon Obama has commented on, his task as healer Sunday unfolded on unfriendly political ground as his re-election campaign approaches. Obama narrowly lost Missouri to Republican John McCain in 2008, but in Jasper County, where Joplin is located, McCain won by a large margin: 66 percent to 33 percent.

"Although Cheney and other officials had suggested Iraq might have played a direct role in the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush acknowledged after the war that there was no evidence of this."

No. I didn't know that. Must have been difficult finding 7 foot men willing to get an operation to make them look like bin Laden. Why they would want to do that is anyone's guess???

All Presidents travel abroad. Several have drunk alcoholic beverages. Your point?

You say we Democrats blame Bush for everything?
Who insisted they had proof Iraq was buying yellow cake?
Who insisted we go to war with Iraq before they could use it to make Nuclear Weapons?
Who insisted Iraq was aiding bin Laden?
Who completely ignored Katrina for 5 days? No FEMA. No ANYTHING.
Who insisted on compounding Reagan's idiotic Trickle Down Policy?
Who screwed up getting bin Laden at Tora Bora?
Who decided shortly after Tora Bora that bin Laden was no longer a target?
You're sorry bout lites that were lost? I didn't know anyone lost any lites.
Could you give us an example of HOW Obama is taking advantage of the cost of taxes???

You shouldn't count on people voting against Obama. The vast majority would vote for porky pig before they would EVER vote for another Bush lookalike, soundalike, anywhere in office.

This is not the place for such comments. There are others that you can leave you hate. Part of the reason for all the crisis in world is because we don't show enough love for other American people. I am sure there were a lot of people that felt the same as you did since Joplin was one of the red states that dislike the President as much as you did but still this is a time to heal and pray for these people get their life back. We got plenty of time to go back to hating once these people have their life back to normal.

Frankly, I don't care how "godlike" some news tagline sound. There is nothing "godly" about any of the Presidents we have had throughout this country's history--present one included. And if people make a conscience decision to make that assumption about Barrack Obama or any President, I think they need to have the straps on their straight-jacket checked.

And that "quote" of yours sounds just as suspect...

The quote is indeed suspect.

It was Obama mocking Hillary who had mocked Obama for being considered the annointed one and for the awe he seemed inspired during the primaries.

My guess is that sarcasm and irony will not be in his stump speech in his next presidential campaign. Perhaps we'll see it at next spring's Correspondents Dinner when he gets to do his remarkable stand up again.

If you have more bills than income do you reduce the number of hours you work? That how I see the Bush Tax Cuts and then extending them instead of letting them expire. Crazy Math.

The wars are expenses. President Bush told us to go shopping. He should have said it was time that everyone was going to make a sacrifice after 9/11. I expected my taxes to go up. If my household expenses were going up I would be looking for a second job not reducing the amount of funds coming in.

The fairytale that lower taxes creates jobs hasn't panned out. The rich have gotten richer but Government is in deeper debt and the middle and lower class is going backwards.

Not only wasn't he there, he also IGNORED all calls for help for 5 days. He was busy in the meantime eating birthday cake with McCain and playing his geee tar. He did send in FEMA 5 days later. After he noticed by the public uproar that it was time to get his rear in gear.

On the otherhand, Obama sent in FEMA the very next day.

Did you ever consider that Clinton, Kerry, Pelosi, and Gore believed the Bush lie, like most of us? It's unbelieveable that a President would knowingly send American Soldiers to die, and to kill innocent civilians because he wanted to get even with Iraq for his daddy?? Not to mention the cost to American taxpayers.

Your link is worthless. Read the comments from his readers.

"Haven’t you learned by now that everything Michael Mahoney reports is BIASED! He can not just report the facts, he always puts his PERSONAL political twist on the topic.
Some of us are capable of evaluating the facts and deciding for ourselves. We do not welcome his biased twist on everything!"

Beyond that, there is the fact that the Republicans decide they get to cut funding for fuel efficient vehicles BEFORE they will give out disaster relief. In other words, if they can't destroy us one way, they will destroy us another.

It just boggles the mind that none of you pennies for replies posters understand what your enployers want you to do. Obviously none of you are rich. Otherwise, why work for pennies? I'd bet most of you are on some sort of welfare, defrauding the Government. You don't realize they are trying to take welfare away from you? They tell you they must give it to the rich and that soon you too will be rich.

I have news! You aren't going to get rich on their pennies for replies.

It is just so sad to read some of the comments here that do nothing more than tear this country apart. President Obama is doing what every President does and that is to comfort and send aid to those who have been devastated by these kinds of events. It makes no sense that we as fellow Americans cannot even be civil in our thinking when it comes to a natural disaster like this.

...Really, now? Where was Obama when all these tornadoes hit? Using our taxpayer's money for photo ops all over the world. He had to come here to play the humanitarian president. He has no compassion for anyone or anything but his own cause. My prayers are with the victims....not the faker-in-chief standing over the ruins of someone's house so he can look good.

You must not think anyone can google. Counting Camp David visits as "vacation" is rediculous not to mention the fact that the President of the United States is always on the job, no matter where he is. Counting overseas trips to G8 meetings and meeting with other world leaders is not a vacation, it is doing the job the President was elected to do.
