Facebook Users Number Almost 700 Million: Report

Facebook Users Number

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/31/11 11:18 AM ET Updated: 07/31/11 06:12 AM ET

Facebook membership is fast approaching a new milestone, according to Facebook stat tracking site Socialbakers.

Membership growth from the past month indicates that the social networking site will soon notch its 700-millionth signup.

Users in Brazil created 1,949,700 of the new accounts, the most new signups from one country during May 2011. Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico, Argentina and India rounded out the top six countries where new members are flocking to the social network, according to the signup data.

The U.K., with 661,200 new users, made the number-10 spot on Socialbakers's list of fastest-growing countries on Facebook. The United States, however, didn't even crack the top 20.

While Facebook's official statistics currently list 500 million active users, this figure may be due for an upgrade.

Check out Socialbakers for more details about Facebook's expanding membership.

Here's an internal chart that shows 2015 projections to hit 7.3 billion users - that's 100 million more than the population of earth.

700 million sheeple and counting...... and nope, I'm not one of them. I refuse to use social networks, don;t use Windows, and only use my cell phone for work - all due to very well-known-and often-ignored-by-most-people security issues.

I refuse to use electricity, fire, or stairs, due to very well-known-and-often-ignored-by-sheeple safety issues. I'm awesome.

Does this means that 700 million people around the world signed up but 500 million are inactive? So, 700 - 500 = 200. Not so impressive as most people tought. Digitally Undivided

The numbers are meaningless, My cat has a facebook account (http://www.facebook.com/rockythecat) and is "friends" with a bunch of other cats. There are loads of "fake" accounts and joke accounts and duplicates and other crap. It would be interesting if the numbers could be distilled down to something more valid, as in an estimate of real valid accounts instead of just sign ups.

Wow, if Facebook catches on with cats, there's no telling how many users they can get. Problem is that so many cats are strays and don't have internet access.

The problem is that these "users" are not beneficial to facebook. The data is not helpful and there is no other set of eyes. But that is probably why facebook goes by signups instead of active legitimate user accounts. Who cares if people are actually using the account or if someone has three accounts as long as facebook can claim its e-peenor is that much bigger?

I am fascinated to watch this phenomena as it grows astronomically. Too bad that Face Book continues to be plagued by stability problems and unexplained throttling issues. It will be interesting to see if they can fix and survive over time or will collapse like AOL did and become just another note in the Internet Symphony.

Facebook is like condominium with lots of tenants.. People live on its pages contrary to AOL services.

Vlady, were you on AOL in its Hey Day? Before the Internet between the chat rooms, forums, auditoriums and games, people lived there too. As more and more services became free on the Internet, AOL had to redefine itself as more of an ISP and less of a service.
