White House Scandal On The Way, Says Math

Whitehouse

Hey, America! Are you ready for some high-level presidential scandals? No, no, calm down. I have none to report. But what's being reported is that one day -- maybe someday soon! -- there will be a scandal to report, and this can be totally proven with mathematics, thanks to political scientist Brendan Nyhan:

One of the least remarked upon aspects of the Obama presidency has been the lack of scandals. Since Watergate, presidential and executive branch scandal has been an inescapable feature of the American presidency, but the current administration has not yet suffered a major scandal, which I define as a widespread elite perception of wrongdoing. What happened, and what are the odds that the administration's streak will continue?

Wait, so that time Common read some poetry at the White House didn't count as a scandal? Well, I bet a lot of people feel pretty foolish now.

Nyhan identifies two major factors as key determinants in the inevitability of a White House scandal. First: Does Obama have an opposition party that dislikes him intensely? Check. And does a "news media" that thirsts for scandal exist? By Jove, yes. And so, voila: "My research identifies presidential approval among opposition party identifiers as a key risk factor. The reason is that discontent among the opposition's base creates demand for negative news about the president, encouraging opposition legislators and members of the news media to promote allegations of misconduct."

This explains why things like Obama's maintenance of, say, Bush-era warrantless wiretapping doesn't rate as a scandal. Obama's opposition loves warrantless wiretapping. Obama's supporters love Obama. And the media doesn't care. So, even if the Electronic Frontier Foundation says that "this is change for the worse," the world spins on obliviously.

Nyhan goes on to point out other external factors, like the fact that the media keeps having to cover news like the Arab Spring and earthquakes and floods and the death of Osama bin Laden, and whatever newshole is left is taken up by things like birtherism, which is only a "scandal" if you are some sort of deranged person.

But, again, scandal is inevitable:

Going forward, though, the odds of scandal are high and rising. Obama already faces low approval among GOP identifiers and a similarly hostile climate in Congress. Back in March, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman noted that Republicans hadn't yet made a serious effort to back up claims that the Obama White House is "one of the most corrupt administrations." As more time passes, pressure to find evidence of misconduct is likely to build -- my data suggest that the risk of scandal increases dramatically as the period without a scandal stretches beyond two years.

Do you need to see this in chart form? Here you go!

See! Scandal is all but certain. And yet I'll still bet you ten dollars that when and if it surfaces, the story won't be broken by the White House Press Corps.

Of course, a presidential scandal isn't necessarily defined as some action that Obama himself takes that balloons into some disruptive media event and political self-destruction. He's got a whole administration full of people who could slip up at any moment and, say, funnel arms to anti-American extremists. (Ha.) All we know is that this is a pretty neat trick: Should a scandal blossom, it's now been predicted. If one fails to materialize, well, that just means there's one around the corner. The scandal could drop at any moment. Oh, ho! What's this?

Nailed him.

Two things going on here. 1. Conspiracy of lies. 2. The real conspiracy to unseat the President. The first conspiracy is what this article is about, just blah di blah di blah. But, man, the second conspiracy, that's the one that is brewing from the "people behind the curtain" who "emerged" after the war of the 19th century, who became the trusts that Teddy Roosevelt busted, who put in Taft as a front, who  Read More...

The scandal is that we elected an unqualified socialist for President.

If there isn't a real scandal invent one. Make those people in the Administration defend things said about them instead of focusing on their jobs. They aren't busy enough with international and national problems as it is. Let's just make any excuse as evidence of incompetence.

This has to be the silliest prediction since, well, since Harold Camping forecast Armageddon. What kind of "proof" is it to say that something's gonna happen because some frustrated out-of-power bozos want it to happen? Been there; remember the hunt for "the Whitey tape"? Remember the "Vince Foster was murdered" theory? Crank conspiracy theories are no way to run either a campaign or a country.

Nothing here but paranoid lies by people who are born to hate!

How could the public find out if and when there was a scandal? With this man in the WH, has kept his almost entire past a secret. He has managed to get by without telling anything about his life before getting into the IL Senate. For years now, we know he NEVER produced a BC, but due to no one verifying IF he was eligible by the Constitution, he slipped right by. That is his style, what the public doesn't know, is very good for me. With my money and ties, no one needs to know anything about my life.

Lie after lie after lie.

Wow, you must have forgotten about the fact that The Supreme Court Justice is unable to swear in anyone to that office without first making sure that the person is qualified. Second, you must have forgotten that The Congress declared him eligible to run. Third, you must have forgotten that Obama produced his Birth Certificate (the legal one) back in 2007. Fourth, you must have forgotten that Obama wrote a book about his life. Fifth, you must have forgotten that Obama was a professor of law, and has many other people detailing much of his past.
Please don't forget the factual evidence of your claims next time.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck... It's just a matter of time. He was never truly vetted and his past is so well protected. It's just a matter of time.

If there is no scandal then you invent one? Typical of the media.

There are already White House scandals out there, but the media is generally too busy fawning over President Obama to call him out on the real issues. We could use some "old school" Sam Donaldson questioning of the President these days. I think many in the media are scared (justifiably so) that to question Mr. Obama too intensely or persistenly on any issue that does not portray him in a favorable light, will result in charges of being motivated by racism. How else do you explain the Bill Ayers issue? As Commander in Chief, Obama praises our military at every opportunity, while doing everything he can to downplay his association with this man who has sent bombs to the Pentagon, and tried to bomb a military dance at Fort Dix, New Jersey and called soldiers returning from duty in Vietnam "pigs" and approved of spitting upon and assualting them. Obama refers to "despicable acts" by Ayers, but will not come out and condemn him. Then there's the matter of putting GE CEO Jeffery Immelt in charge of job creation in the US. Really? Job creation in China is more like it. This goes contrary to what Obama's stated goals are, mainly to create jobs in the US. Obama spends time bashing companies for not paying enough taxes, the hires Immelt, whose company paid ZERO in taxes on US sales of $14 BILLION! Why has no one pressed these issues with the President?
02:24 PM on 06/02/2011
The scandal is all the promises Obama made to get elected. Say anything. Just get the votes. The change has left my pocket and hope with it. Get rid of this joker.
02:59 PM on 06/02/2011
I was going to reply, but you have done it perfectly!! GET RID OF THIS GUY!!!
05:02 PM on 06/02/2011
I would just like to say, thank you for repeating what he did. Let's not forget he now has over a year to put his LIEING promises out there for the Kool-Aid and Obama Lovers. I would hope that people who voted for him before have learned just what his idea of CHANGE is by now, and we the people of the USA do NOT want HIS CHANGE! We want him GONE before we are not known as the United States of America, but some ungodly name he wants to call us. I do hope, SOME DAY, we will have the control of our country back in the hands of a real President and CIC that knows how to be a REAL leader.

As long as 50% of Americans continue getting their entitlements, scandals won't be able to keep a Chicago politician out of the white house. They have their own way to deal with scandal and to keep those same 50% in the dems column. Remember the mob!
02:20 PM on 06/02/2011
I would think the fact that he is incompetent would be scandal enough.
02:27 PM on 06/02/2011
yeah....and dubya was over qualified, right?
04:05 PM on 06/02/2011
Don't see "your side" putting forth to many bright and promising options ....
02:17 PM on 06/02/2011
There will always be scandals in polititics....there always has and always will be, and it's never only one party....both parties have them and will continue in the future.
02:17 PM on 06/02/2011
Oh the scandal will happen when Obama loses his bid for 2nd term. They'll be moving out with the White House furniture, paintings and silverware just like the Clintons tried to do
02:16 PM on 06/02/2011
Oh, and by the way, if there was any scandal the only news that would report if would be Fox. The lamestream media would be making excuses for the "God" in the White House. Speaking of scandal, Weiner is just that a pathetic "weiner".
