International Monetary Fund Braces For Possible Hack Attack From Anonymous

The International Monetary Fund is ready to be hacked.

According to the Wall Street Journal, an IMF spokesperson confirms that it is taking measures to safeguard against a possible hack attack from cybervigilante group Anonymous.

"We are aware of the threat, and have taken appropriate action," an IMF spokesman told the WSJ.

Anonymous posted a tweet on Wednesday urging followers to set their sights on the IMF website. "#OperationGreece: Target: http://www.imf.org," the tweet read. The time of the attack is still "TBA."

IMF, currently in negotiations to help stabilize Greece's suffering economy, recently approved a $40 billion dollar loan as a part of a $140 billion bailout package.

Anonymous released a missive on May 25 condemning the Greek Government and the IMF for accepting the loan without letting citizens vote on the agreement, and for subjecting the people of the country to "prolonged poverty and a dramatic decrease in their standards of living."

"The people of Greece have been left with no other option than to take to the streets in a peaceful revolution against the economic tyrants that are the IMF," Anonymous wrote.

The moderation on this site has just been terrible since the AOL acquisition. Would any moderator care to explain why so many of my posts got nuked?
11:29 AM on 06/03/2011
Yeah, over half of my replies got deleted by mods. Probably because they were very anti-Anon and they're scared of getting hacked. Cowards. :)

I honestly doubt that, since, as far as content is concerned, I've been quite supportive of the tactic. What is likely happening is the new "keyword" ban which, unless I'm mistaken, used to just hold postings in a queue for approval. Yet, in another article, I saw a moderator apologize for a systematic auto deletion based on a keyword. Either way, while the moderation on the HP was bad before, it's gotten much worse since the AOL acquisition. It's leaving me less inclined to bother with this place each day.

Rule 1 for posting on Huffpost:

"If your comments consistently or intentionally make this community a less civil and enjoyable place to be, you and your comments will be excluded from it."

That is most likely why you get deleted.
11:35 AM on 06/03/2011
I'll second that.

I hope they get hacked. The IMF is a evil organization that needs to be taken down a peg.

Folks, I know I'm a bit off topic here - but I want to point out that this is another reason to NOT buy the so-called protection insurance scam on your credit cards.
07:18 PM on 06/02/2011
It sounds off-topic because you didn't tie your statements adequately to the topic. Can you expand on this? I don't buy this type of insurance, but I'd like to read your explanation and possible connection to the IMF. Thanks.

You are correct that it is not directly connected to the IMF - my point was to convey that monetary institutions that try to sell you protection against identity theft etc. - are even more vulnerable to hacking than the IMF. Also, we credit card holders are better served by not paying this type of insurance, but instead paying more toward our debt.

Thanks for listening.

Vigilante justice is ok when they are attacking people you don't like. What happens though when they target something essential or incur collateral damage? How is this different than having a citizens committee in a neighborhood punishing those they feel are guilty of infractions? Judge jury

executioner in a secret non-accountable committee is NOT the hallmark of a free/open society. I oppose what they do simply based on their organization. I don't agree that we should let anyone take the law into their own hands. (sorry HP chopped my post)

Governments, Bankers and other orgs/nations (the US invasion of Iraq comes to mind) all the time.

Why is violence flowing top to bottom acceptable and not met with the same disgust that it is when the people send it back up the beating stick? Because we've been taught that the cops will always know better than the protesters. The Gov't will always know better than and act with more judiciousness than it's citizenry. I call shenanigans on this thinking.

Time for people to stop chanting 'Ghandi, MLK, ' and bring it on, using whatever means they have. The IMF/WTO and World Bank need to be taken DOWN.
01:37 PM on 06/02/2011
Are you talking about anonymous or the IMF both of whom do exactly what you describe...and since the courts have all decided only rich people get "justice" I am all for groups like anonymous exposing the govt and corp filth.
10:22 AM on 06/02/2011
I was down with Anonymous until they took away my abililty to play online games on the Playstation network.

Wait... I don't even play my PS3...

Go Anon! >.>
04:33 PM on 06/02/2011
Wait, Anon issued a statement saying it didn't hack the PS3 network.
06:38 PM on 06/02/2011
Wrong.

AnonOPS stated THEY didn't hack the PS3 network. It is impossible to say they didn't hack the network, as anyone claiming to be Anonymous is automatically Anonymous. They can't possibly know what all their members are doing at any time. They may not have organized the attack, but they're pretty positive that it WAS a member of Anon (acting as a rogue agent) who carried out the attack.
06:25 AM on 06/02/2011
I often wonder why the media keeps trying to paint Anonymous as either 1) a terrorist group that is trying to overthrow America, with support from the "Commies" and "Radical Islamists", or 2) a bunch of bored kids who are sick and tired of watching the governments/religions/corporations of the world carry out vicious assaults on the poorest and most powerless people in the world.

I am proud to say that, even though I am not a member of their group, I am Anonymous too! I think someone ought to have the guts to stand up to those monsters that our governments are too uninterested in fighting. If I had the tech savvy, I would let them Zombie my PC and everyone's I know in order to stick it to these crooks, thieves and liars!!!

Fanned and Faved. And the media does this because they work for this Capitalist system and they must frame the language to reflect immediately that this group is 'bad', 'against our way of life' and indeed a threat. I happen to feel otherwise.
11:20 PM on 06/01/2011
I see a lot of people wringing their hands over things like this (often with the audacity to declare themselves left of center in someway) but I'm not sure everyone is as acute in their analysis of what this action this group is capable of carrying out means.

They have the potential to shine a flashlight (or floodlight?) on old money. This is more than a peaceful protest (though its still peaceful), not to mention a bunch of punk kids.

Now I can see people on both sides of the spectrum appreciating a larger understanding of how power concentrates wealth, especially in 'bad economic times', to find out if maybe they should be at liberty to enjoy more of it. I'm sure there will be less thoughtful members to the right who consider old money entitled to money they have concentrated.

But people who claim to be left of center? Get it together.
02:39 AM on 06/02/2011
Anon is far from "a bunch of punk kids." Stop whining, read, learn, and help.

June 5, the WI recall is more than just jive...

I'll admit I first came here for the jokes, what with the trouble facing the head of the IMF and all. Hopefully a computer attack will not jeopardize the security of our financial markets, especially when the world is on the brink of a tepid recivery. These attacks need to be taken as seriously as an invading attack on our soil.

Hahahaha, a computer attack is the least of the problems the world financial markets are facing. Think global depression. There will be no recovery, just more pain.

"IMF, currently in negotiations to help stabilize Greece's suffering economy" The IMF doesn't help anyone but themselves to the money of the country the allows its citizens to be enslaved for generations. Leaders of all nations are becoming just as despotic as those in many third world countries. The IMF has already enslaved the populations of many poor nations thanks to their leaders lacking a conscience. If anyone deserved to be attacked it would be the international banking community.

Yes, heaven forbid some backwater nation gets an opportunity to step into the 21st century with IMF assistance.
