That's really cute. My 5 year old nephew just learned to ride his bike and he was REALLY loud and proud about it too! So sweet.

I remember when my son Danny first learned to ride a bike. He learned to ride but didn't know how to stop. He kept on riding around in circles until the family realized that he couldn't stop.

I did the same thing as a kid when I learned how to ride. I couldn't figure out how to stop so I rolled onto the grass in our front yard and made a "controlled: crash. I figured it wouldn't hurt as much as falling off the bike on the street. I was right. My parents filmed the entire incident on super-8.

Fantastic. Being a father is the best thing in the world. Period.

Starting to build a proper tree house with my boy this week, and I bet I'm as excited as he is.

P.S. Nice to see a properly fitting helmet on such a little guy.

Agreed on all counts (except the father bit! I'm hoping that being a mother will be pretty great too, when the time comes. :)

Good luck with the tree house!

A bicycle for me was the ultimate in freedom. We rode for MILES. Our parents might as well have not existed once we got wheels!

At 12 or so we decided to ride to the next county where fireworks were legal. To do so we had to cross the Tennessee river bridge, a narrow, 2-lane bridge with fast moving cars. Scary indeed. It didn't have a solid deck, it had a grate, you could see all the way down.

I had memorized the route. Before that age, you really don't know where things are, your parents do all the driving.

Overall it was probably a 40 or 50 mile day for us, but our sense of accomplishment was total. Our parents may have wondered why we were so tired, but no one said a word.

We lived in a small, fairly safe town. Parents today probably wouldn't let their kids have the adventures we did. From climbing local mountains, to wiring a local cave with christmas lights, to bicycle adventures....we had it good!

Today's kids, texting, playing video games, watching too much TV .....meh!

You thoughtful post brought back a flood of memories of my childhood bike riding. No one in my 50's blue collar neighborhood ever got new bikes, they were bought and sold between dads and you got new tires and handle grips, maybe some new paint, but we thought they were the best. We also would be gone all day Saturday with our wax-paper wrapped peanut butter sandwich and jelly jar of warm milk. Yes, I too think we had it best. Oh, and by the way, in my garage their are six bikes that I use as often as I can.

Ah... those were the days. Our parents never even looked for us, and when they called us in at the end of the day we always begged, "Five more minutes!??"
