Hosni Mubarak And Sons To Stand Trial August 3

Hosni Mubarak

By MAGGIE MICHAEL   06/ 1/11 12:40 PM ET   AP

CAIRO -- Former President Hosni Mubarak, who held absolute power in Egypt for nearly 30 years, goes on trial Aug. 3 charged with corruption and intentionally killing protesters, a court official said on Wednesday.

The ousted leader's two sons will be tried at the same time on charges of corruption.

The Middle East News Agency said Abdel-Aziz Omar, head of the Court of Appeals, set the trial date that will put Mubarak and his sons in the dock six months after the former president transferred power to a military council on Feb. 11.

Mubarak's ouster caught the United States off guard and scrambling to revise its policy toward the Arab world's most populous country and a steadfast Washington ally.

The revolt in Egypt followed quickly after a similarly surprising uprising in Tunisia that forced that country's longtime leader from. Since Mubarak's ouster ongoing revolts have swept Yemen, Libya and Syria, but entrenched leaders in those countries still cling to power and have been responsible for widespread violence and killings of their own people who are demanding democratic reforms.

Mubarak could face the death penalty if convicted. At least 846 protesters were killed during the 18-day revolt.

The location of the ousted leader's trial remained unclear, given that a government-appointed panel of physicians determined on Tuesday that Mubarak was too ill to be jailed while awaiting his appearance in court.

The doctors said Mubarak's heart condition put him at risk of a sudden attack. The panel also reported to the country's general prosecutor that the 83-year-old former president was suffering from depression. Mubarak has been in custody at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh since April.

Since Mubarak's ouster, tens of thousands of protesters have demonstrated repeatedly to press for a trial that would hold Mubarak accountable.

"The trial is not taking place as part of a smooth judicial process, but only in response to heavy pressures," says Bahey-eldin Hassan, director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.

The case, however, marks the first time in modern history that an Arab leader has been put on trial by his own people. Iraq's leader Saddam Hussein was toppled during the 2003 U.S. invasion. He was captured by U.S. forces and sentenced to death three years later by an Iraqi court that was under the quiet supervision of U.S. officials.

Mubarak's prosecution has been complicated by health concerns. He has been interrogated in the hospital, but an order by the prosecutor to transfer him to prison during the investigation was overturned on grounds the prison health facilities were not sufficient to treat the former president's ailments.

The charges against Mubarak assert he "conspired with the former security chief and other senior police officers" – already on trial in a criminal court – "to commit premeditated murder, along with attempted murder of those who participated in the peaceful protests around Egypt."

The charges said Mubarak and the other officials were involved in "inciting some policemen and officers to shoot the victims, running some of them over to kill them, and terrorizing others."

Mubarak and his sons also were charged with abusing power to amass wealth and enrich associates and of accepting bribes.

A close associate of Mubarak, Hussein Salem, also was charged with bribery. The Mubaraks are accused of taking bribes in return for helping Salem with business deals. He has fled the country.

The Mubarak sons are jailed in Cairo and facing investigation for other possible crimes.

The military council must be dismantled, As you know, they are all part of the ex-regime. Ministers are escaping prosecution in Egypt through misleading egyptians with false facts. Who honestly can believe that they are being prosecuted in egypt! Confusion is intentionally made to divide egyptians. Chaos is the result of using thousands of criminals, including Salafi extremists at large, in attacking egypt's christians.

We will never accept SHARIA LAW IN EGYPT, whether NOW or in the FUTURE?Since when did the Muslim Brotherhood represent the voices of ALL egyptians!Wasn't the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt behind numerous attacks on egyptians and foreign tourists in the past? RELIGION MUST BE SEPERATED FROM STATE. We DEMAND real Democacy, Freedom & Justice, not a new RELIGIOUS REGIME! This military government cannot be trusted. Everyone knows that they are corrupt & are still loyal to the ex-regime. The international community must intervene immediately to restore law and order in egypt.THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MUST ACT IMMEDIATELY, IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF PROTECTING EGYPT, BEFORE THERE IS A HUMANATARIAN CRISIS.

Christian girls are being abducted and raped by criminals through the streets of cairo, churches destroyed, christian properties ransacked and christians murdered. Apparently, over 300 christian girls have been abducted to date and everyday there are new victims.Recently, a 20 year old young christian lady, that was abducted a month ago in front of a coptic church, was returned naked and murdered in front of the same church. There are thousands of unreported crimes that are being committed. The Egyptian Authorities are not protecting or stopping these ongoing Acts of Terror on innocent civilians.

Further, thousands of Muslim Extremists have been smuggled into Egypt from Pakistan, Afganistan, including from Hamas, since the Authorities opened its borders with Palestine.WHAT IF, VIOLENCE BREAKS OUT IN THE SINAI PENINSULA OF EGYPT BETWEEN HAMAS EXTREMIST MUSLIMS AND ISRAELI SOLDIERS?The Egyptian authorities have endangered the national security of the country. It is becoming clearer, that the Egyptian Authorities are causing confusion, as they make deals with the Muslim Brotherhood in paving the way for the enforcement of Islamic Sharia Law in Egypt. We are concerned of further persecution of the suffering christian minority in egypt, alike Iraq, Syria and the rest of the middle east.To note a 12 year old christian boy was beheaded, only weeks ago by muslim extremists in Syria. In another incident, a Christian man was beheaded by muslim extremists in Iraq.

Christians are being falsely accused of crimes that they NEVER committed in EGYPT, for the purpose of SILENCING them.2 Christians that went to Protect a Coptic Church in Ain Shams, which was under attack by Muslim Extremists in Cairo (EGYPT) were both sentenced to 5 years imprisonment by the ruling Military Government.

It has been proven that Non-christians who carry out Acts of Terror on Christian civilians are never punished, convicted or brought to Justice for their Crimes! This is all the work of the Egyptian Military Government through muslim extremist Clerics, whom are inciting hatred and creating chaos all throughout Egypt. The Military Government has threatened to REMOVE the Citizenship of all Coptic Egyptians outside EGYPT in order to SILENCE them, for defending the Human Rights of the Christians in EGYPT.However, we have “NO FEAR” because “GOD IS WITH US”.

Obviously, there is a Systematic Genocide of Christians going on all over the Middle East. There will most definitely NEVER be Democracy and Justice with this existing military government that is corrupted by muslim extremists. There are over 12,000 criminals on the loose, which were released by egypt's ex-regime, to seek revenge on the egyptian people. To note, the ex - regime of Mubarak is in giving orders through the governing military arm of the current transitional government.

The Egyptians are beating out the USA when it comes to the 'Rule of Law'. When do we catch up with Egypt, reclaim our honor and show the world that we believe in justice,no matter who it is, your bad guys or ours. Semper Fi

He was our loyal friend for 30 years, when he needed us most we let him down(we didnt even offer him asylum)

He used us and we used him. That's not the definition of a friend. Let his country hold him accountable.

let's not forget Saddam was also our "loyal friend" during the Iraq vs. Iran war.

simple, yet overused cliche: "enemy of your enemy is your friend."

Mubarak trial to start in August, "free and fair" elections to be held in September.
Trial creates unrest so elections have to be postponed. Very sad state of affairs.
Today is June 1st 2011, time 1922 EDST.

They should let this rest ... no good can come of this, and just like Saddam Hussein fair and partial justice cannot be served. I think he is guilty but this was a worldwide conspiracy and to put Mubarek on trial which is not going to really lead to the setting right of the whole world is a farce. Either just put him in house detention or exile for the rest of his life.

But I have to admit I don't know the specifics that he is charged with ... so, if there is specific evidence of specific crimes - maybe ... it's just that look at his country and part of the world ... how can one create justice where the basis of society there is injustice, intolerance and violence?

Why don't they simply force him to turn over his illgotten fortune? It is my understanding that he has 70 billion out there somewhere.

that would be fair. i don't know any good can come from another kangaroo court in the middle east at a time of unrest and stress.

They say he ordered the killing of the protesters. I think trying him will send a precedence to the next leader, I hope.

Why even bother having a trial---with the Muslim Brotherhood in control, directly or indirectly, the out come is a forgone connclusion---guilty. Going to be intersting in seeing how the Muslim Brotherhood splits up the family money once the trial is over.

Where are you getting your information? I never heard that the muslim brotherhood are in control. They do hold some seats in their parliment but the majority of Egyptian citizens want a secular govt.
05:03 PM on 06/01/2011
And the majority of Egyptian citizens get what they want, right???
