Matt Lauer met Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday morning, something the "Today" show host told Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry he had "been thinking about for a long time."
Lauer and Al Roker, along with New York's Archbishop Timothy Dolan, flew into Rome on Wednesday to film two days of special shows about the Catholic Church. Lauer said that the team rushed over to the Vatican soon after landing. There, he had a special audience with the Pope, and gave him a crystal cat. (The Pope is a well-known cat fan.)
"He seemed to accept it and liked it," Lauer said hopefully.
