A system of strong storms is headed straight for the northeastern United States, prompting a National Weather Service alert for a tornado watch for a wide area until 8 p.m. Eastern Time tonight.

The tornado watch extends from New Jersey to Maine, and it includes the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, as well as Newark, Hartford and Providence.

Here is the alert from the National Weather Service (scroll down for a map of the tornado watch):

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF CONNECTICUT MASSACHUSETTS WESTERN MAINE NEW HAMPSHIRE NEW JERSEY SOUTHEAST NEW YORK SOUTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA RHODE ISLAND COASTAL WATERS EFFECTIVE THIS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 100 PM UNTIL 800 PM EDT. TORNADOES...HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

The last few months have seen a high level of tornado activity. It's already been the deadliest year for tornadoes since 1950. There were more than 600 confirmed tornadoes in April alone.

Years ago I was at a wedding in Pennsylvania. It was storming and during the reception the lights went out. No idea that outside there were tornadoes ripping through the area. The next morning we took a drive and were just awe-struck at the amount of damage. Houses ripped away scattered across acres of corn fields, cows flung about stiff with rigor mortis, silos turned into tin scraps, trees shredded like toothpicks. Never in my life seen such devastation up close and personal. I wonder which states have the fewest natural disasters so I can move there.

WTF. i remeber hurricane gloria in (85?) but i have no recolection at all of there ever being a tornado threat. our weather has certainly turned wacky. where i live in oregon yesterday we had hail and snow, on JUNE 1st, hail and snow!

Every part of the country has weather that other parts of the country regard as peculiar to that particular area. Here in my part of Texas, tornado weather is normal, but the most worrisome part of our weather. Really cold winters with lots of ice/snow, not so much. The northeast has cold, snowy winters as a norm; tornado weather, again, not so much.

Just as I am really happy when I can put on shorts and go barefoot in January, I am sure New York, New Jersey, etc. are happy not to have the weather radio running, listening for tornado watches for months at a time.

Exceptions exist-right now the NE has tornado weather, last winter we went down to 5-10F, and didn't get above freezing for over a week, and plumbers were making overtime like you wouldn't believe with busted pipes everywhere.

Coping with out-of-the-norm weather is never any fun, everyone in the NE, stay safe.

Having just lived through the tornado in Minneapolis and have just cut up the last tree that crushed our house, I'm glad that I can use my brothers computer to take a break. Sorry that you're living thru a portent of deep doo-doo, I"ve had mine, now it's your turn. Good luck.

Is there any reason why tornado, etc, suddenly stop at the NMexico / Canada border ? Wind just stops at the border ???

There's no such thing as anthropormophic global climate change. All those "scientists" are lefty conspirators trying to destroy big business. Do not insist on meaningful regulation or you're a communist hippy.

It has been determined that this is being caused by the leadership in congress who are creating a vacuum with their political stupid thinking and lack of taking care of the business of the country in order to try to make Obama look bad.

I'm in the Ohio River Valley and for us to not be under a tornado watch is news. Luckily, I've only been in three actual tornados and they weren't nearly as bad as what happened in Joplin, but they are certainly nothing to take lightly.

mtmist3383 -- exactly!! Regardless of the severity between storms, they are never anything to be taken lightly. Especially from all we have seen in the past month alone. Stay safe!

Live close to the action in middlesex county. Bands of rain and wind. Took everything off patio. Sky is weird white with some darker clouds. Going to be a fun night.

I am an hour west of you in PA across the river from warren county and it went over about 3 pm, however, it was a few sprinkles and some wind. You got the brunt. It's still hot here.

The video of the twister on the river sucking up water was incredible.
I hope no one was on that bridge when the funnel went over it.
If the wind didn't get you, it looked the wave of water over the bridge would.
My best wishes go out to those affected.
Amazing video.
