National Donut Day 2011: America's Donut Obsession By The Numbers (INFOGRAPHIC)

It's no secret that America has a love affair with donuts, but on National Donut Day we get to celebrate our obsession unabashedly by grabbing free samples of the hot and delicious rings of deliciousness from multiple national donut chains.

But it's not just on this sugariest of holidays that Americans reach for the sweet and simple concoction. According to Sally Levitt Steinberg, author of The Donut Book, more than 10 billion donuts are sold annually all across the country.

I'm in an 8am Monday morning class a few weeks ago. Ironically it was Sociology. And this clown walks in with a box of KKremes, 12 to be precise, and eats the whole God damn box. Everyone else in the class thought he was so cool for some reason. Guess they didn't realize it was simply a hilarious display of exactly what our teacher was trying to tell us not to do or fall into...

The upper midwest has a lot of Germans and Scandinavian's and they love their donuts. Plus we get very cold winters. Donuts are the lifeblood of a long drive in the snowy winter months. Have to clean the steering wheel often but they are great fuel

Shipley's beats Crispy Creme any day, imo. The best in Houston has to be the one on Homestead and Tidwell. Or the one on Mesa Rd. Or perhaps the one in the tunnels downtown. Yum!
