Summer, when I was a kid, meant weekend road-trips in our family Rambler to sites of historical interest. We'd pack up deviled-ham sandwiches and Cokes and make pilgrimages from our apartment in Queens to Teddy Roosevelt's house on Long Island or Washington Irving's house in Westchester.

All depends on how far back in time you want to go and what you're going for. Henry Miller's 'The Rosy Crucifiction" trilogy will take yo back to the late 20s without the syrupy nostalgia usually associated with the unxuous "The Great Gatsby" book.

I've never read them before so I've bought The Winds of War and War and Remembrance for my summer light reading. I've always loved the WWII era.

"Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett was the best book I've ever read to transport back in time. For the duration of the read, you feel like you are IN the middle ages, building cathedrals. Very fun book to read!
