'Patriotic Millionaires' Describe What They've Done With Their Bush Tax Cuts: 'I Built A Dance Floor In My House'

First Posted: 06/06/11 03:29 PM ET Updated: 08/06/11 06:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Paul Egerman isn't certain how many millions he's saved from the tax cuts enacted during the George W. Bush administration in the early 2000s and extended by President Barack Obama in December of last year.

"I do not know how much I've saved over 10 years but I'm sure it is several million dollars -- probably in excess of $10 million," said Egerman, founder of a medical transcription company called eScription.

And what, HuffPost asked, have you done with all that cash?

"I've kept it," he said. "I have not done anything with that money."

Egerman is part of a gang of self-described Patriotic Millionaires who wish the federal government would help itself to more of their money to address its big budget deficits. Nearly 200 millionaires have signed a letter asking congressional Republicans to consider healing budget gaps with increased revenue -- in particular, higher taxes on millionaires -- instead of just reduced spending.

The group is coordinated by the Agenda Project, a New York think tank, and Wealth for the Common Good, a network of business leaders and wealthy people that promotes "fair and adequate taxation" to support the economy.

Other millionaires on a conference call Monday morning said they had more fun with their extra money than Egerman did.

"I probably traveled a little bit more than I otherwise would have," said Frank Patitucci, CEO of NuCompass Mobility Services, a company that offers relocation management services.

"I got a bigger boat than I used to have," said Dennis Mehiel, the founder and chairman of cardboard box manufacturer U.S. Corrugated, Inc. He lamented that the construction of his 150-foot sloop didn't create any jobs for American workers. "The problem is, it was built in Italy."

Dal LaMagna, founder of Tweezerman, said he used his extra money to help the local economy in by adding stuff to his house in the Pacific Northwest.

"I just started creating jobs myself. I built a dance floor in my house -- which I really didn't need," LaMagna said, adding that he also put in a parking lot. "I just became a Dal LaMagna economic stimulus package in Poulsbo, Washington."

The tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 overwhelmingly benefited the richest 1 percent of taxpayers, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute. The progressive Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated in 2009 that the tax cuts "added about $1.7 trillion to deficits between 2001 and 2008."

The tax cuts would have expired in January, but President Obama broke a campaign promise and struck a deal with congressional Republicans that reauthorized the cuts for two more years in exchange for one year of extended unemployment benefits, among other things. Tuesday, June 7, is the 10th anniversary of the tax cuts.

Extending them further would result in an extra $68,079 for the average member of the richest one percent of taxpayers in 2013, according to estimates by progressive advocacy group Citizens for Tax Justice.

"If they are fully extended, they will cost five-and-a-half trillion dollars over the coming decade," said CTJ President Bob McIntyre on the conference call.

I make about 700 gross, 550 net a week. You know what ide do with that 150... probably spend it all.... The middle class disproportionaly spends a higher % they make than higher income earners. If they arent spending it its not helping the economy anyway....

Quite a few posts seem to indicate that the citizens’ targeted for higher taxes had no part in obtaining it. That it was purely luck or good fortune and all because of the society in which that person finds him/herself. Isn’t it more accurate to say that the society we live in affords all of us have the same chance to make good (what ever that means to each of us) and some work hard enough to make their own luck? Are we about punishing those who are successful in their endeavors? Yes we should contribute to the common good. All of us . But no it is not "from each according to their means...to each according to their needs." Many resist more taxes on anyone until spending is truly under control. In my state, IL, last year we increased our taxes by 66%. What did my blue state leaders do with it....pay off the debt? Nope, they spent it and a lot more and we are in worse shape than before. Control spending first. And stop bashing fellow citizens for being successful. Finally, if these wealthy people (and especially wealthy dem politicians like Pelosi, Reid, Kerry and Obama) believe they and others should pay more, then write a check and send it to the US Treasury.

Why do you seem to think that only 'others' should pay more and write checks for more than they owe? Why shouldn't EVERYONE pay more?

That would be a start. Right now only about 1/2 of us pay anything at all.

Again, this article is about income taxes or do you think it is about all taxes. If so then perhaps we should look at property taxes as well as the sales taxes and see what the stats are....But pretty sure it has to do with income taxes as the current controversy is concerning them. Should not every one pay at least a minimal income tax? Even if it is just a fraction of a percent?

If they want to give more money to the government, what is stopping them? If they are so patriotic and wanted to jumpstart the economy, why haven't they spent it? Nothing but lipservice.

1. We have known for 40 years that trickle down does not work. 2. Once it is legal, what people do with their money is a moral issue, sure- but it is a personal one. A way to judge character; but unless it violates a governmental law or rule, it is still personal. 3. the core problem is equitable taxes, and a government that uses the taxes of the citizenry for infrastructure and baseline management of the country. Not hand-outs to the rich, not operating freebies for corporations, not privatizing the military to waste time in other countries for a private corp. profit, and not corruption.
03:25 PM on 06/08/2011
Yeah. A tax cut is hardly a handout. The despicable rich pay most of the taxes already and social spending on the poor and those that prefer to not work eats up much more of our budget than anything else. Most of the rich got that way by innovating, delaying gratification and hard work. To turn around and punish them is ridiculous; telling a successful person that the decrease in cash seized by the Feds amounts to a government handout is unconscionable. Smacks of jealousy.

Donald Trump was handed tens of millions of dollars by his father. The despicable rich pay most of the taxes because... wait for it... they make most of the money! Paying taxes is not a punishment. It is the cost of living in a civized society. If you don't want taxes, move to Somalia. Your local police and fire departments and schools and roads aren't paying for themselves.

Also NOT true, AFDC (Welfare) is about 1% of the Budget. Social Security and Medicare is paid for by taxes paid by the beneficiaries and SS has a SURPLUS of 2 TRILLION DOLLARS

president obama "broke a campaign promise" and extended the tax cuts.
i break my promise to support president obama.
nothing he has done pissed me off more than this.
the "job creators" have done nothing with jobs, tax cuts where more about putting money in their pockets and WE got screwed.
no thanks, no more of that.

He was blackmailed into extending the cuts so that unemployment could be extended. I guess he thought that it was the lesser of two evils. Should he just have let the unemployed starve?

If he stick to his guns, the Republicans would have eventually caved. He could have taken to the airwaves and portrayed the Republicans as taking from the unemployed to give to the rich. And he would have scored some political points with his base and independents. I'll probably vote for him again (not that it matters since I've moved from Florida to New York) but he has been a huge disappointment to me when it comes to economic matters. I blame it on the people he surrounds himself with - political cowards who are neocons in progressive clothing.

The job creators are the House. They write the jobs bill. The House is controlled by the Republicans. They have been busy taking away women's rights so they have not been able to get to any jobs bill yet. Maybe in 6 or 7 years.

The House drafts a bill. It goes to the Senate for changes, approval. It goes to the President for signing/not signing. The President does not write or create a bill. Civics 3rd grade

Actually private businesses are the job creators. All we need is for government to get the h out of the way with taxation, reporting and regulations and the economy can take off again. We have a capital full of lifetime pols and academics that have never run a business or met a payroll and that only ever gamble with OPM. They need to step aside and concentrate on those areas the Constitution proscribes to the Federal govt. Call it abortion, will you?
