USC Stripped Of 2004 BCS National Championship

Usc Stripped Bcs Championship

The Associated Press   06/ 6/11 07:17 PM ET   AP

The Bowl Championship Series stripped Southern California of its 2004 title on Monday, leaving that season without a BCS champion.

The announcement was no surprise. BCS officials had said USC was in danger of having its championship vacated after the Trojans were hit with heavy NCAA sanctions last year for rules violations committed during the 2004 and '05 seasons.

"The BCS alerted us today that their presidents have voted to vacate USC's 2005 BCS championship game victory," USC athletic director Pat Haden said. "This was not an unexpected outcome. We will comply with all requirements mandated by the result of this BCS vote."

The NCAA ruled star tailback Reggie Bush received improper extra benefits during those seasons and was ineligible when he played.

One of Haden's first moves when he took over as AD last year was to give back the school's copy of the Heisman Trophy that Bush won in 2005. Bush later relinquished his own Heisman and the trust in charge of handing out the award announced the '05 winner would be left vacant.

The BCS waited until USC appealed the NCAA sanctions, which included a two-year ban from postseason play and a loss of 30 scholarships over three seasons, to make a decision about its championship. The NCAA denied USC's appeal on May 26.

At that point, it was just a matter of time before the Trojans' 55-19 victory against Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl was wiped from the record books.

The dominant performance capped a perfect season by USC and left it ranked at the top of both the AP and coaches' polls. Auburn and Utah also finished that season undefeated.

The Trojans will not have to relinquish The Associated Press national championship.

"The BCS arrangement crowns a national champion, and the BCS games are showcase events for postseason football," BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock said in a statement. "One of the best ways of ensuring that they remain so is for us to foster full compliance with NCAA rules. Accordingly, in keeping with the NCAA's recent action, USC's appearances are being vacated."

The BCS also said the Trojans must vacate their participation in 2006 Rose Bowl. USC lost that game, 41-38, and the national championship to Texas.

Yeah well, my parents stripped me of my 21st birthday. It doesn't change the fact that it happened and it was mine.

The NCAA and BCS are elitist, bureaucratic JOKES! Anyone that has possessed the athletic gifts to play college athletics is laughing raucously at this farce. Why? Because you can't "TAKE AWAY" a championship that was earned on the field of play by young men and women. The physical preparation leading up to the event and the subsequent blood, sweat and tears expended during the contest don't just "go away" as if all the herculean efforts never happened! Fine the institution if you must, even take away a scholarship or three--but this silly act by an antiquated organization that profits from legalized indentured servitude is why they and the NCAA should be congressionally monitored.

Whoopdee frickin' do.

Like they care they got busted. They're more than happy their cheating awarded them the championship. A historical footnote in the aftermath is a worthwhile trade-off.

I'm willing to bet Reggie Bush would buy me a car if it brought him a single 1000 yard year in the NFL.

Heck I'll take a Ford and he can combine recieving and rushing yards for a single 1000 yard year. He was a chump at USC and its being exposed even more so in the NFL.

Mediocre at the NFL level, yes. Chump at USC? Be forreal, bruh. Reggie was easily the most dynamic player in college that season. While Young probably should have beat him out for the Heisman, Bush was CLEARLY in the upper echelon, among the very best in the nation his last year at 'SC.

OJ Simpson is now more welcome at USC than either Reggie Bush or Pete Carroll.

It's time to take professional farmclub sports out of the taxpayer requirement. The university is not a place for the corruption of the media and pro sports. Give the taxpayer a break make the university sports intermural for health and education, spend less money, and if the Pro Teams need farm clubs for talent, let the vaunted market resolve that problem.

Those programs more than create their own revenue.

There is no need for taxpayer assistance.

Henry your comments scream with no clue. College football alone is a multi-million dollar a year sport. It needs no help.

I was an athlete at USC in the 80s. The athletes are coddled and special and the stars were there to become pros. Favors had been going on long before I was there, while I was there, and after I was there. There have been few changes over time, behind the scenes.

Interesting thing... in today's LA Times Sports section, the story didnt even make the front page. And when you found the story inside, you noticed that the story itself downplayed the move, just as it's placement attempted to. In fact, the first few paragraphs were used to discuss how this action was expected... yadda, yadda, yadda.

It's amazing how far that paper's sports page goes to promote and defend the regions's only pro football team.
