Greenpeace Protests Mattel At Headquarters In El Segundo

First Posted: 06/07/11 08:26 PM ET   Updated: 08/07/11 06:12 AM ET

Greenpeace activists hung massive protest banners on the Mattel headquarters building in El Segundo, California. The posters, depicting an unhappy Ken doll, state, "Barbie, it's over. I don't date girls that are into deforestation."

Activists dressed as Ken dolls lowered themselves down the fifteen-story building to hang the banners. They were joined by a female activist dressed as a Barbie doll, who drove a pink bulldozer while handing out flyers to Mattel's employees. At least eight of the activists, including "Barbie" were arrested and charged with conspiracy and trespassing, reports Reuters

Greenpeace is targeting Mattel for using paper company Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) to package their Barbie and Ken dolls. According to Greenpeace's site, APP is "Indonesia's most notorious rainforest destroyer," and tropical rainforests are being deforested for "cheap, throw-away toy packaging."

APP joins Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) as the latest Sinar Mas subsidiary to be targeted by Greenpeace. A campaign targeting Nestle successfully stopped the company from sourcing palm oil from GAR. From the LA Times: Both APP and GAR are subsidiaries of Sinar Mas, a giant conglomerate of more than 100 companies controlled by the Indonesian-Chinese family of Eka Tjipta Widjaja, a politically connected billionaire.

GreenPeace made a clever and simple idea work here, and there is nothing like using their own advertising campaign against them..humour works when attack and denigrate doesn't..congrats to GreenPeace.

Asia Pulp and Paper meets the legal requirements for all countries to which we distribute our products throughout the world. It is our responsibility to adhere strictly with these laws,

Greenpeace’s allegation that it found mixed tropical hardwood fibers in some products that we might have produced is meaningless. Indonesia’s pulpwood land concessions, legally provided by the Government of Indonesia, include some degraded forests, which are required by law to be developed into plantations. Rather than burn the wood residues, increase carbon emissions or create disease outbreaks in the forests, the government requires that they be used to produce paper pulp. Despite this, as publicly stated, we have set the goal of 100% sustainable plantation pulpwood by 2015. There is absolutely no illegal wood tolerated, nor is high conservation forest (HCV) harvested for pulpwood production.

Our packaging materials contain more than 95% of recycled paper sourced from around the world, making APP a leader in Indonesia in recycled paper production.

We call on Greenpeace to do the responsible thing and share with the public the detailed scientific analysis and independent result on which it bases its allegations. If the group has identified any specific illegal fiber in the products it analyzed, we want to know what it is because of our zero tolerance for illegal wood.

Indonesia’s pulpwood land concessions, legally provided by the Government of Indonesia, There is your scapegoat. You can buy anything, and make it appear how you want it to be. That does not change the fact of where it originated from. If I were to make a choice and trust Greenpeace or the Government of Indonesia on where your paper came from, I would go with Greenpeace. This reminds me of "legally hunting gorillas"

Really clever campaign, Greenpeace. I hope Mattel corrects the problem before my Barbie girl's birthday in the fall.

Boy, Mattel, sure is irresponsible and out of it. Why, with all that money, would they not be using recycleable material. Some companies just dont think. It is hight time for corporations to be held accountable for non-Earth friendly activities.

There you go, So quit your jobs, leave your homes and families, empty the bank accounts, hop a jet to Maylasia, go out into the rain forest and SAVE THOSE TREES. A strait jacket and some thorazine will await you on your return. So, as you sit in the corner of your padded room, rocking back and forth, you can keep up the mantra "I saved a tree, I saved a tree." Now Barbie will have to be packaged in old, used Christmas wrap. Hooray for the heroes and heroines of GreenPeace, they go above and beyond. (I wonder who foots the bill for their nonsense)

Or, you can sit on your butt, never object to anything, never try to better your world or bring attention to issues that matter to you. Sleep! Consume. Sleep! Consume. What could possibly go wrong?

Why do you people always set up these outlandish scenarios? There is plenty of recyclable material available for them to use.

And, I've got news for you: It is a GOOD thing to save a forest.

This is great. I love greenpeace. You gotta understand that a few months ago Mattel launched a campaign where they put billboards all over the place having ken ask barbie to marry him. Now greenpeace is using that to tell her that he is dumping her environmentally unfriendly a-s. This i great. I love greenpeace.
