Hershey's Air Delight: Candymaker Launches New Aerated Milk Chocolate

First Posted: 06/07/11 02:43 PM ET Updated: 08/07/11 06:12 AM ET

Hershey's has recently debuted a new riff on its chocolate bars and kisses: aerated chocolate. "Your taste buds have never experienced chocolate bubbles like these," claims Hershey's.

While spokesperson Anna Lingeris explains that Air Delight's "light and airy texture causes the chocolate to melt with ease over your tongue, making it the ultimate chocolate indulgence," blogger Foodette sees otherwise. "It's a phenomenal way, much like whipped cream cheese and whipped candy bars, to stuff less product into the container and sell the very air you're whipping into it in the first place and overcharge the customer," she argues (see her full no holds barred review here). Cybele May of Candy Blog notices some sour notes, as well as a bit of saltiness and milkiness, though she deems the treat "worth it" and rates it a seven out of 10.

Aerated chocolate accounts for $500 million of global confection sales [pdf]. Who knew?

Nestle makes Aero, and their chocolate is the same quality as Hershey, if not worse. Quit being such SNOBS- European chocolate is NOT better than American, it's just made with different varieties of cocoa beans, therefore each company has it's own blend and resulting taste. The chocolate's smoothness is irrelevant to that and depends on other factors. Hershey makes Symphony bars for smoothness freaks- and in a blind taste test I dare anyone to be able to tell, on texture alone, Symphony vs. say Lindt. By the way, Lindt uses barley and other additives much more than Hersheys. I am personally thankful that Hershey took the initiative and made a whipped chocolate bar here- since I've always liked Aero bars and Cadbury Flake bars. However Aero bars are not superior. Also-sheesh- who would think Hershey is trying to rip people off by changing the texture? What- are you losing 10 cents or something? How petty! Some foods cost more because of improved texture- are we such pigs in America that we have to have quantity over quality in everything or we'll throw a fit? No wonder it's taken this long to get anything new here. People are so worried that some big company is trying to rip them off instead of enjoying a new product. Wow.

More air for you, more profits for Hersheys!

You can do anything you want but Hershey's chocolate will always be that nasty gritty substance that tries to imitate chocolate.

It was surprisingly better than I expected (tried one today). Now, I need to procure one of these "Areo" bars I keep reading about (chocolate and mint = delish)... ;)

Well done America, inventing something that is already $500 million industry in the rest of the world.

Makes me want to try my new chocolate flavored air. For those who don't like the mess chocolate leaves on your tongue or hands. A potato chip sized bag filled with yummy chocolate air. Now with 10% chocolate.

Weighs half as much and costs the same! Food inflation disguised as candy innovation.

Oh, it's an Aero bar. Well done Herseys, invent something that already exists. What's next, mint flavoured?

Make it dark chocolate first. Second, make all Hershey's chocolate taste less waxy. Then I might give it a try.

Doesn't that look appetizing, "melts with ease over your tongue" and your money melts with ease out of your wallet as you pay the same amount of money for half the chocolate.

This is hardly news...there's a British chocolate bar called AREO that's been around a long time. It comes in chocolate and mint...yummy!

Hershey's chocolate has never been a preference of mine anyway.
