Iran Submarines Red Sea Journey Causes Alarm

Iran Submarines Red Sea

06/ 7/11 05:37 AM ET   AP

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has sent submarines to the Red Sea in the first such deployment by the country's navy in distant waters, a semi-official news agency reported on Tuesday.

The deployment reflects Iran's efforts to show off its naval power. Iran has long sought to upgrade its air defense systems and navy to portray itself as a regional military superpower, as well as prepare for any possible future attacks against the country, saying they would most likely be air and sea-based.

The Fars news agency, which is close to Iranian military officials, said the submarines would collect data in international waters and identify warships of other countries.

The report quoted an unnamed government official as saying the submarines accompanied Iranian warships on an anti-piracy route in the Gulf of Aden before they moved into the Red Sea earlier this month. Fars gave no details on the number or capabilities of the submarines.

Iran has long had three Russian-made submarines and last year, four new small Iranian-built submarines were delivered to its navy.

The four were said to be Ghadir class submarines, which can fire missiles and torpedoes and at the same time are capable of cruising in shallow waters, such as those of the Persian Gulf off the Iranian coast.

Earlier this year, two Iranian warships shuttled in a naval visit to Syria. The move prompted an outcry by Israel, which considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear program, its calls for Israel's destruction and its support for the Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah militants.

Israel, the United States and others want to stop Iran from what they fear is a push by Tehran to develop nuclear weapons. So far the pressure on Iran has been mostly through international sanctions but both Israel and the U.S. have not ruled out a military strike if sanctions fail.

Iran says its nuclear program aims only to produce electricity.

I was a US Submarine Engineman for five years - Diesel and Nuke... I have seen what is under Cuba. I have felt the cold North Sea. I have played FF with IVAN under the ice.... Those Irainian submarines are too ugly to do anything but float. They look like shoes, and shoes dont sink. They probably secure the hatches with leather latches. Their torpedoes are probably made made from coconuts sent C.O.D. from Russia. Their engines probably run on gasoline - Bang bang Bang bang. -Richard Stickney

If I recall correctly, the picture shows the boots of the giant statue that is about to be built next to the shores of Kish Island.
Joke aside, Iran is not thinking of attaching anyone and will not dare to do so EVER. In case of any war all sides are losers. I would suggest for those who have the option to go to store and purchase beer or wine, do so on this wonderful friday and stop wasting more time. Here in Shiraz I have been waiting for my "dealer" to drop my booze and there is no sign of him!

These subs have an operating range around 250 miles. They are not a threat to America since their operating range is limited to Persian Gulf.

I hope Iran make 100s of these subs, because they are the best deterrence against America's fifth war in the region: Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, the fifth war would be Iran.

It's only a matter of time before another war breaks out and it will eventually be with Iran, get ready for $10 gasoline.

Get ready for total collapse of global manufacturing and transportation.

That would be good news, maybe we could all get to work again instead of employing the Chinese and Indians. Iran is behind more than we know and one day it will come out.

look up "General Wesley Clark The truth about Iraq/MiddleEast" on youtube. he says the war on Iran will occur.

I keep reading this article but I don't see where anyone has expressed any "alarm" . Seem like Huffpo is the only "alarmed" person.

This anti-Iran propaganda piece neglects to mention that these are 9 foot diameter midget submarines which are equipped with two torpedoes and some mines.

They can definitely sink ships.

That would be the stupidest thing they could do. We have subs crawling all over that part of the world and they the most advanced in the world.
07:30 AM on 06/08/2011
LOL, the coke smugglers have better subs!
01:49 AM on 06/09/2011
coke smugglers have semi-submersible not subs, and we can't catch those either.

This is nothing but more posturing from a regime on its last leg who has consistently confused having the loudest voice on the village square with an actual foreign policy.
(from Saïdeh Pakravan, author of the novel Azadi, Protest in the Streets of Tehran, about the rigged presidential elections of June 2009)

The green movement's foreign policy is no different from the current policy as I recall.
10:33 AM on 06/08/2011
There is ZERO evidence that the elections were rigged, and poll after poll by US organizations have found that 1 - the people did vote for Ahmadinejad, 60% to 40% (and about 80% of Iranians regularly turn out for the vote - thus disproving the notion that the government is unpopular) and furthermore the vast majority -- over 90% -- approve of Iran's nuclear program and foreign policy.

Do you think that maybe they were a little afraid not to vote him? My question is if their vote like we do, with the government having all our information when we vote.

Well it does take a lot of hot error, add some vanilla ice-cream, a bit of Tehran rhetoric soda, and bingo you've got yourself a Persian float.

Is this like the Iranian version of "kinetic action?"

Admittedly a pair of old Russian KILO Class subs don't pose that much of the threat, but the story is significant because of what the deployment symbolizes, namely, the first foray of Iranian naval vessels beyond that country's adjacent coastal areas.

Even under the Shah the Iranians made no secret of their regional ambitions--to become the reigning political and military nation in SE Asia, and none of that has changed one iota under the ayatollahs. Many of us may scoff at the story and not attach any meaning to it, but it is really only the beginning. Iran will soon (or already is) nuclear capable, and any American president will have to deal with the steadily growing challenge that Iran will pose to American interests in the region.

And what will Obama do? Not much....he will talk....and talk....and talk....and make it sound like things are changing for the better when in fact for the last 30 years the Iranians have usually gotten the best of us. We may have F-18s, but the Iranians have been consistently more clever and innovative when it comes to making things difficult for us.

The Shah wants to be the regional power of SE Asia? Isn't that rather far away? (I assume SE means "South-East").

As for the "nuclear capable" bit, that's merely unsubstantiated accusation; as for Obama, I'm no fan of him, but what do you want him to do? Pre-emptive attack?
